Came to celebrate joint 70 Birthday

Avaliou em 15 de setembro de 2022

We visited this Hotel pre-covid and really enjoyed the stay so that we decided we had to come again, especially as it was our joint 70th Birthday celebration. We thought that the hotel would give us something in the room on this special occasion, like other hotels normally do, but all we got was verbal birthday greetings when we checked in, so this was our first disappointment. Everything else seemed fine until we went down to check the menus and the bar menus when things started to unravel. We discussed our requirements with the bar manager and she showed us the bar menu which had some interesting items that we wanted to try. I asked if the menu would change for the next day and was assured it would be the same (especially as we were vegetarian and there is only a limited selection). We went for dinner and saw that the same item on the menu (which we wanted) as on the bar menu and we asked if this would still be available tomorrow and again we were assured that it would be. After making our selection of food for that evening someone was serving other tables from the bread basket and seemed to avoid our table and did not come to us. Only after we asked the waitress specifically did she tell the waiter to came to us with the bread basket. He then only offered us one slice each from a selection of only two types of bread (no rolls were offered) which seemed a bit mean as we would have expected a basket of fresh bread/rolls to be placed on each table so that we would not need to keep asking again. It was almost like “Oliver Twist” asking for “more”. We felt they were under instructions that it was one slice of bread per person and that it. We were paying good money for the meal at £66 per head (for two courses) and seemed to be on the other end of a cheap money saving exercise. The waiters also had this snobbish attitude about them (as though they had seen too many “upstairs/downstairs” films and wanted to play the part – and we did not fit in as being “Lord of the Manor” types especially as my wife looked Indian. In any case the ambience created by the staff did not make the experience pleasurable.) The next day we moved rooms (we knew this when we made the booking), however although the room seemed freshly made up there was a sense of it being stale and the pillows, although having fresh covers smelt of other people’s smelly sweat. We had to ask for replacement pillows which were provided but were not really that much better. The next day we were disappointed to be told that the hotel had ran out of the evening menu/bar item that we wanted and had been promised. This limited our choice and surprised us as all food is supposed to be freshly made onsite and (IMO) the chef has plenty of time to buy ingredients. Next morning, we went for breakfast (which is served – not buffet) and were happy to see Kippurs (we eat fish) in the menu so we ordered and were told it would be ready in ten minutes. Ten minutes arrived and instead of having of the kippers arriving we were informed that it had again run out and there were none, again a disappointment. Check out time was 11.30 and I asked if we could stay till 12.00. The receptionist said “no” and at the same time the manager came out to ask us if our stay was good. I said that it was spoiled by the catering arrangements expecting that as minimum compensation we would be allowed to stay an extra half hour, but all I got was condescending answers and asked if I wanted someone to take the luggage from the room. (In other words, he did not want to be bothered by any issues and just wanted to see us go) Since lock down we have been to many hotels and I must say there are better ones to spend your money on. It’s a shame that this hotels service level has not recovered after COVID, and our good memory from our previous stay before corona was spoilt.

Comfortable and sedate stately home – a quiet escape close to London

Avaliou em 13 de setembro de 2022

We had a great one-night stay at Hartwell House. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room – we chose one of the Royal rooms on the 1st floor, expensive but worth it – was very large with high ceilings, had a huge bed and plenty of useful furniture; the bathroom was OK (one sink, not big, shower in the bathtub). Don't expect a modern decor – this is a stately home, with lots of original detailing carefully preserved. The food in the restaurant was very good. Maybe the hotel has responded to earlier reviews: there was a good vegetarian menu for dinner, with three options for starter and three options for the main course, and the options we chose were delicious and a good portion size. Just be aware that if you book the "dinner bed & breakfast" option the price includes only 2 courses, so you pay extra for the (delicious) dessert. Breakfast the next morning was good and plentiful. The spa has a large pool which is obviously intended to be a quiet place. There's also a fitness suite. We stayed one Sunday night in early autumn. The hotel was very quiet, and most of the guests elderly. There was a definite Jane Austen feel to the whole experience! If you want somewhere with more of a buzz and modern luxury then go to Chewton Glen. But for a quiet and restful stay in a welcoming and comfortable stately home close to London, with good food and lovely grounds, then Hartwell House is a great find.

Take a trip back in time - literally

Avaliou em 11 de setembro de 2022

We were intrigued by the idea of staying in a National Trust property, and indeed, the property itself is lovely, as are the buildings. However, we mistakenly assumed that the rooms would have been brought up to more modern standards. If you are looking for an historic, secluded holiday, you'll enjoy Hartwell House. Just be aware that the room decor is of a prior generation or two.

Wow amazing afternoon tea

Avaliou em 6 de setembro de 2022

From the moment our party was greeted at the door to leaving this beautiful hotel we couldn’t fault a thing. We were all shown into the morning room for our afternoon tea, which had been elegantly set up for us. All of the cakes, scones and sandwiches were lovely but for me the chocolate scones were the winner, I would go back just for them. Thank you to all the staff for an amazing experience and looking after us so well, I’m looking forward to another visit already !

Afternoon Tea at Hartwell House

Avaliou em 6 de setembro de 2022

I visited with my sisters for afternoon tea on Sunday. The surroundings were wonderful and so atmospheric. The afternoon tea was divine! I highly recommend the chocolate scones and the chocolate cherry macarons. , but everything we had was first class! The staff were attentive, kind and friendly, we couldn't fault anything, and wouldn't have wanted to. Thanks Hartwell House for a magnificent afternoon.
