a bit tired
this hotel was selected by our tour company for the first few days of our China trip, and I suppose it served our purpose, but it has seen better days, and is quite tired throughout. The rooms especially are let down by badly needing replaced carpets. There is a bar but be prepared for ridiculous prices, reflecting that there are no other places nearby to have a drink. Location was ok, with quite a few restaurants around it, and a walk of maybe 30 minutes takes you to Tiananmen square, and just beyond, the Forbidden city. There is a main drag street going down towards the Square, and there is a great atmosphere there with many shops, restaurants and lots of street food. We enjoyed our stay for the few nights we were here, and the hotel didn't put us off at all, but if we were booking ourselves would try to find something better.
This was in a quite good position but the rooms and service were quite poor. We asked for 2 single beds and they separated the double to make to singles (which was fine) and moved the side table to be between the two singles. This revealed that the table had been covering a quite large mouldy spot in the corner of the room! The toilet continually ran. Breakfast was poor with food plates regularly being empty and having to ask staff to refill which they did when they were ready to do so..... we requested a taxi for the airport the night before we left and came down early and explained about our booking. All seemed fine until the taxi didn’t arrive and when we spoke to reception they’d forgotten to ring for a taxi for us!
First Stay in China at Dong Fang
This is a historic Hotel with partial English speaking staff It is close to the Temple of Heaven and based on price paid was an excellent choice. Its a bit weather beaten and needs a good clean in some areas esp carpets We stayed in the main high floors.and not the older historic part but that didnt matter we had a good stay, after all you only need a bed, shower and roof. Good brekky with a good mix of food. Lovely staff in the restaurant A smile goes a long way. Unlike New Zealand no maps or info pamphlets in hotel but then it did not exist in many places in China. The house bar was so over priced we went elsewhere 40 yuan for two wee cans (200ml) of lemonade . For those doing the sums thats about $4.00 NZD each. Its cheaper to drink beer The house bar was run down and lacked a selection. Most things being crossed off the available list. Overall though. For the price we paid, a good hotel. I like to photograph on the streets and I had plenty of opportunity here.
A disaster - avoid this hotel at all cost
We had been travelling 2 weeks in China with Beijing being our final stop. Our agency had booked this hotel, and based on the pictures we got, we accepted it. What a mistake! Don’t go there, and here is why: - First, it’s the wrong part of the city, and you dont want to stay there, no point at all. No restaurants, nothing around. - Second the hotel it totally worn down. It’s from the 70s but was only partially renovated. There is the main building (somehow restored) and the auxiliary - a disaster. - the rooms were horrible, and super small. Absolutely nothing to do with the pictures from their website. - the rooms, while not being non-smoking, smelt like ashtrays. - the carpets are dirty and full of staines. - finally, service is a dishonour to China. In all other hotels service was good to great, here not. While we were waiting and discussing where to go, there were not seats (!!!). We wanted to seat int he restaurant (if it can be called this way), but we could not (we had to buy something). Finally, the stairs offered us some refuge, but the security guard was clearly not happy. Please avoid this hotel, there some many nicer and cleaner one at the same price.
Unfriendly hotel in Beijing
We stayed three nights in this hotel and the personel were very unfriendly, not helpful at all and hardly spoke or try to speak English. The bar belonging to the hotel switched off the lights 10 minutes prior to closing time without notice and we still had our drinks. I stayed in many hotels but never had such a bad experience. Breakfast was very busy and noisy, food was not too bad. The walk to the forbidden city and shops was around 1/2 hour. I would not recommend this hotel to stay over.
