4-star potential but poorly maintained
This hotel was very nice when it was built, but it hasn't been well maintained. Good points: comfortable bed, good layout, OK to good restaurants (my wife liked it better than I did), no noise from outside. Bad points: lots of noise from the hallway, chipped enamel in the bath tub, cigarette burns in the carpet. See attached photos of the tub and carpet.
Perfect for travellers
If you have an early train this is a great place to stay ! Our place was wonderful. We did get the suite which was totally worth it. Our entire travel experience was smooth sailing because we had a comfortable night.
The only advantage of the hotel is its proximity to the railway station
We booked the hotel because of its proximity to the Railway Station. And this is the only advantage of the hotel. The hotel is located across the street from the Railway Station. Check in the hotel was at night after an eight-hour flight. The hotel staff worked very slowly
Good location but otherwise an unpleasant experience
- The ONLY reason to stay at this awful place is its proximity to the Beijing West Railway Station. Unless you have a very early train departure, or a very late train arrival, do not stay here. Here is a list of reasons not to stay here: - they double charged my credit card. When I was checking out, the hotel promised they would refund the money the next working day, but they didn't. This is tantamount to fraud, so I'm now having the hassle of needing to dispute the transaction through my credit card provider. - the reception staff speak no or minimal English, which is surprising poor for a supposedly 4-star hotel that advertises its staff speak English (in reality, the only thing about this hotel that was 4-star was the grandeur of the lobby). A good translation app is essential if you don't speak Chinese. - the staff were not friendly when I checked in. I handed over my credit card to pay at check in, and their receptionist then made a big song and dance about how I had to pay and not just leave a deposit (I had given them my card and hadn't said anything about a deposit -- actually, not speaking Chinese, I hadn't said anything at all -- so clearly they were making false assumptions. I still have no idea what that was all about but it was all rather confrontational and upsetting, particularly as I was travelling alone, don't speak Chinese, and had no idea why they were being so unpleasant). And then they double-charged my card... - they gave me a key card for the room door that didn't work. They sent a bell boy to show me to my room. I noticed he couldn't open the room door with the card they'd given me, and instead used his own card. He was about to leave me with the bad card, and I complained using my translation app. Fortunately he was pleasant and helpful, and he came back with a swipe card for me that actually let me into my room. - the airless room stank with a horrible stale smell. It was dingy and smelt like the carpet had been flooded and had not dried properly. The carpet was stained and I was glad I had disposable slippers when I had to walk on it. As a shower and toilet had been built into the room (hidden just by nasty frosted glass screens), something probably had flooded onto the carpet at some time. My room had no window, so there was nothing I could do to ameliorate the smell and I just had to put up with it (given the difficulty communicating at check in, going back and asking for a different room wasn't a realistic option). I was just glad I was only staying in this dump for one night. - the bed stank and there was a large, nasty stain on the padded bedhead mounted on the wall above the bed. I had a twin bed room and the beds smelt so bad that I slept on top of the quilt on one bed, and used the quilt from the other bed to cover me (fortunately the bed linen seemed clean and fresh). - the place is hard to find. Fortunately a Chinese friend had pointed it out to me previously, as the signage is only in Chinese. I arrived back in Beijing on an intercity train around 11.30pm, and even though I could see the hotel, I had trouble getting there from the station. It's just across the road, but I'd had to lug a heavy suitcase up and down stairs of the overpass in 40C heat (there are lifts, but they were out of service). Fortunately a kind Chinese man saw me struggling and came to help me with my bag, and he then looked up on his phone how to find the hotel, and he showed me the way. . In summary, the place is a dump. It's a shame as it could easily be nice if they refurbished the rooms (simple improvements wouldn't even be expensive) and taught the staff some basic customer service skills. ------- Directions from Beijing West Railway Station: 1. stand at the front of the North Entrance/Square of the railway station, looking away from the station. The hotel is the tower diagonally across the road on your right (there is an overpass walkway, but if I were there again I'd be looking to see if there is also an underpass). 2. You can use the overpass on your right to cross the road, then take the right hand exit from the overpass. The hotel's courtyard/driveway is on your left at the bottom of the steps. 3. Note that the entrance to the hotel is on ground level, and it's on the right side behind the building (ie. you can't see the entrance from the station).
Two stars at most
This was booked by some Chinese colleagues under the impression that this was a 4 start hotel with convenient access to Beijing West Railway Station. . . This hotel is old fashioned and in some cases unsafe. The room felt really unclean, the bed springs had been taken to the end of their life and beyond. The wide selection of condoms on the display stand on the bedside table and the emergency overnight washing kits available to purchase in the rooms bathroom suggested one reason that the beds were so worn out. The emergency exit signs in the hallway had cables exposed, the hallway carpets were sticky etc. etc. I was meant to stay for two nights. If i hadn't arrived so late on the first night I would have checked out immediately however I did check out as soon as possible the next morning. Booked the Novotel Beijing Peace Hotel instead . . and stayed in this for my second night at the same rate as this hotel Don't stay here
