De Jorge e Sandra from Portugal
Found Angel at the front desk to be exceptionally helpful in planning future stays.
Frequent stays have been required because my wife is a patient at Dana Farber which is a very short walk away. I found Angel at the front desk to be exceptionally helpful in organizing these visits and providing information about the area.
The Excellent, the Bad, and the Dangerous!
My wife at I stayed at The Inn at Longwood Medical (room 524) for 8 nights because our adult middle child had an emergency issue and was in the hospital, and we wanted easy access to the hospital. Many COVID restrictions were still in place at the hospital and in the area – masks, only one visitor per day, and limited visitation times. We originally thought that we would stay for 4 nights, but it extended to 8 nights. The process to add time was extremely easy. The Excellent – Hotel staff, room comfort, location, and other proximity issues The staff at the hotel was excellent. Giselle behind the front desk, Rebecca for housekeeping and David, the concierge, were three that particularly stood out. Giselle and David were particularly helpful on the Sunday when we used the laundry facilities next door because our stay was longer than expected. The explanations on how to access and use the facilities were great. Rebecca did a great job cleaning our room – so nice, in fact, that we sometimes skipped one or two days of cleaning because we just did not need it. David helped us use the laundry room and his enthusiasm and pride for his job is incredible!! We had a room with two queen beds and a seating area. We paid about $20 extra a day for the seating area and it was well worth it. The beds were extremely comfortable, and the hotel was quiet. We slept well. The hotel was two blocks from the hospital (the primary reason for our stay). It was extremely convenient to lots of eating options. It was also within a 1.5 mile distance from a lot of different options for shopping and food. We never ate in a restaurant because of COVID, but we would eat outside if it was not too cold or we brought back the food to our room and ate there. The larger than typical hotel refrigerator and the microwave oven were great. There was not freezer with the refrigerator, but that was not a problem for us. There was also an unofficial “walking loop” that was about 1.5 miles total. Each morning before visiting hours started, we would walk 1 – 2 loops to exercise and clear our heads in advance of being in the hospital. There was also a very nice walking park within a quarter of a mile. The hotel was next to a CVS and an eatery, so it was very easy to get needed sundries or fast food. The Bad – Room Airconditioning, bathroom sink, bathroom size, handicap access point in the parking lot, restaurant food The first three items cannot be fixed without a major renovation, but they are worth noting. The room air conditioning system is located next to the window, but the window curtains cover the vents, so the air blows into the curtains rather than into the room. Each night before we went to sleep, we put pillows on top of the unit so the curtains would not fully restrict the airflow. However, the pillows partially restricted the air flow. If we opened the curtains, the room would not be dark because we faced into the eatery area. The bathroom is poorly designed. The faucet downspout is very close to the back of the sink, so you can’t get both of your hands underneath the faucet at the same time. Also, the sink has a larger than normal area at the front of the sink so we had to bend over more than normal to use the sink. I have a bad back and it was uncomfortable to use the sink. The bathroom is also very small. There was very little room to move around. Finally, the light switch for the bathroom is outside rather than inside the bathroom. The result is if either of us needed to turn on the light in the middle of the night, the light would wake up the other person. The parking garage was easy to get in and out. However, it was fairly crowded. On weekdays, a parked car would often be blocked because other people would park in the driving areas. There were times we did not take the car out because we did not want to leave our key with the parking lot attendant. The price ($25/night) was reasonable given the location. The handicap access point from the parking lot to the walkway into the hotel is very steep onto this path. Someone in a wheelchair would need assistance getting onto the narrow path. The restaurant food was average. We only ate the free breakfast meal two days because the quality. We only ordered one dinner. One item was very salty and the other item was not prepared correctly. The wait staff was very nice and friendly the three times we were in the restaurant. The Dangerous – Bath tub, Walkway in the parking lot The bathtub is about three inches higher than normal so stepping in and out of the tub is more difficult that you would expect. They have installed a bar to help get in and out. The major problem is there is no shower mat or slip resistant material in the tub. We asked if the hotel had a shower mat and the answer was no. We went to Target (about ¾ mile away) and bought a $5 suctioned shower mat. When I mentioned this problem to a hotel employee, they said that a couple of years ago many guests complained that the the plastic mats were not eco friendly, so the mats were all removed. The hotel is aware of the danger because there is a sign on the inside of the bathroom door that says something to the effect of “Caution, use care when stepping in and out of the tub.” This could be easily remedied by putting a plastic mat underneath the sink for guests to have the option or to install slip resistant safety strips. Truly an accident is waiting happen. The walkway from hotel to the parking lot is down a small hill (maybe 15 feet long with an 18 inch drop in height) where the concrete is painted. Because of the paint, the walkway is very slippery when it rains. Although the walkway is covered, wet shoes bring in water and make the walkway dangerous. Safety strips or textured paint would remedy this hazard. If these two dangerous items were fixed (slip resistant strips in both the tub and on the walkway), which would not cost much, then the hotel rating would be 4.5 out of 5. However, these items are so dangerous, that my rating is 3 out of 5.
Location, location, location
We stayed here for two weeks while our son was getting surgery at Boston Children's Hospital. It was a little more expensive than other hotels in the area, however you can't beat the proximity to the hospital. It took 8 minutes to walk from our hotel room to the hospital room, it's that close. The rooms were clean, updated, and quiet. There were many restaurants within walking distance and we took advantage of the plethora of delivery services during COVID. Upon arriving there was a misunderstanding between our expectations after booking the room over the phone and the room that we were assigned. Sal, the front office manager, was cooperative, professional, and resolved the issue with a very fair compromise. And enough can't be said about David the Concierge. He was such a pleasure, friendly, informative, and on the days that he worked he was always more than ready to help out. Something that's become truly rare and lacking in customer service. We'll be coming back in a few months for another surgery at Boston Children's and we'll absolutely be staying the the The Inn at Longwood Medical.
David-concierge
I had the pleasure to meet David the concierge a very polite and extremely helpful human being and careful with handling baggage.. Very polite to my family and very cautious about Covid (thankfully)..
