Good 4-star hotel

Avaliou em 22 de agosto de 2022

We just spent 4 nights a short family holiday with our 8 and 4 years old daughter at the Bordoy Don Antonio Hotel in Paguera. We chose this hotel because it was so well rated on Internet. The hotel looks quite good for a 4-star hotel. The rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable but they remind me of the 90ies. We booked a sea view room and expected it to have it in the front of the terrace but instead it was rather a sea side view as we had to turn our head by almost 60 degrees to see it. We enjoyed a lot the different swimming pools and our trips to Paguera, Santa Ponca and Andratx. The service was very good and the team at the hotel were very friendly. It is also great that the hotel has a bus shuttle to Paguera on an hourly basis, so that you can drive to the village and the beach in 3 minutes. You can also walk down there in 10-15 minutes or take a car as we did. The hotel also has animation for the kids, but it´s literally a 1-man show, so I really felt very sorry for the guy doing it. He was very motivated and did the best he could to entertain the kids at the pool and in the evening in the kids disco. What can additionally be improved is definitely the quality of the food in the evening and also the restaurant itself, which reminded us of a big canteen. It was also annoying that we were supposed to pay for a safe (I don´t remember the last time I was asked to do so) and that the minibar was locked in our room. All in all it´s a good 4 star hotel in Paguera.

Nice location and excellent staff but inconsistent food and room ammenities quality

We had a 2 week stay during July at the Continental Don Antonio, Paguera hotel. We had buffet at breakfast and in the evening, since we really like to try all the different dishes. The hotel is rated at 4 stars so I will try to compare it with other 4 star hotels in Spain we stayed at. The overall rating on my side would be slightly above average. The good: - the location is nice which provides (in our case) the following perks: - The view: The hotel is placed atop a hill which, depending on your room may provide nice views of the sea and the surrounding hills. - Forests and sea: There is a light pine forest covering the hills so the combination of green and the blue of the sea is really beautiful and calming. - The quiet: Another bonus (for us at least :) ) is the quiet, since it is well separated from the main tourist area of shops and bars, it really gives you the chance to just appreciate the surroundings without all the noise and the bustle of the busier areas. It's still close enough that you can reach the main area in about 10-15 min on foot (you will have to climb a hill on your way back though :) ). - Trails : I love trail running and this area provided me with plenty of options to run beautiful trails. July does mean that you'll have to get up pretty early for this, but it really is worth it. - Beaches : The hotel is placed close to some of the most beautiful beaches and waters on the island. We drove to beaches on other sides of the island, but, for us, Camp de Mar reamined on the top of the list. - the hotel staff. We really loved our interactions with the hotel staff, reception, bars and cleaning, they were always nice and helpful, some were full of life and cheer, the more technical aspects were also well explained (like when we had some issues with our WiFi). So, overall, top ratings for the staff. - WiFi. The Wifi signal is good (our room at least). I could actually work remotely on a couple of days, hold videoconferences and control remote computers without noticing performance issues. - The coffee. I'm mentioning this because we had mostly bad experience with hotel coffee in Spain. Four or five star hotels, didn't matter, they somehow manage to make mostly horrible (either burnt or watered in to nothingness) coffee. Well, this hotel (pool bar) does it right. You get a decent espresso (nice aroma though a bit too much water for single shots) at the pool bar, and a good filter coffee in the restaurant. - There is a gym and an interior pool (small, so it's mostly just for cooling down away from the sun). The outer pools are also small and get crowded fast, so don't plan for swimming on the hotel grounds. - It's clean and looks nice. You can see effort was put into the buildings creating and maintaining a nice atmosphere. - The bathrooms: you get a double sink and you also have both a bathtub and a separate walk-in shower. - Food: fish, seafood and more specific regional dishes were really nice and tasty. The bad: - functionality . While the hotel looks nice, it seems they sacrificed on the functional aspects. What this means: - room noise. Not only are the walls thin but the aircon system is really badly designed. Noise travels so well between rooms you could have nice conversations with your neighbours just by talking normally close to an air vent :). What this means is that you kind of rely on your neighbours respecting you quiet time :). - showers are bad (for us). I mentioned the bonus of 2 showers per room. Well, the downside is neither actually works well :). This means (for us) that the showers will "allow" you to set the water temperature for a couple of minutes then they start sending cold and scalding water in separate bursts :). And I mean scalding, if you're not quick, you can get burned. It's possible the pumps get out of sync, maybe they are undersized, but the end result is you really need to be carefull with the shower. Now this a basic comfort requirement for any hotel and failing to meet it is quite bad. In our 2 weeks stay we reported this multiple times but it never improved. So, not being able to relax in the shower is a big minus. - Dining/breakfast area temperature. I don't know how but the dining area was most of the time close too hot. THey do have both airconditioning and large doors that would allow airflow (to at least remove some humidity). But it seems the staff didn't master it yet :). It may also be that the heat during our 2 weeks stay was just too much for the system to handle. - Food quality was inconsistent. - Now this is a second major issue at the hotel (after the shower). They can't seem to consistently cook well. - Pork, beef, veal meat are mostly below average. The cooking staff seem to have trouble cooking anything not fish or chicken. 90% of the time (and we tried every day in our 2 weeks) beef, veal and pork meat was either overcooked or a bad choice of meat since it was dry, tough and stringy. This may have to do with the actual meat quality not necessarily the cooks, the steaks were, most of the time, medium raw to medium but the end result was still dry and tasteless, so it may be simply bad quality meat. They also, somehow, managed to dry pork/veal meat in stews :). Now, they have a chef hiding somewhere since 1 or 2 times they did it really well with good flavour and texture. This is a contrast to other 4* hotels in Spain we stayed at. - Store bought dishes, the bad versions. Nuggets, "schnitzels", wraps,.. We had a surprise when we cut into a schintzel and noticed it was that "nice" meat-melt companies create by melting remaining meat byproducts into a paste. I mean, for any cook, to actually make real nuggets or schnitzels should be the lowest possible skill level, easy and quick to make. - Eggs in the morning are hit and miss. The ommelette content is also sometimes just really bad meat-something. - no LAN ports. WiFi is good though, so this is not much of an issue. Still, being able to plug in and not connect via Wifi is sometimes preferable for "workation" style trips :). Tips: - Car rental. Our recommendation is to skip the offers at the hotel, they're twice as expensive as other companies and with no extra service benefits. Also, some of the offers in town are EXTREMELY bad. For example, the price for a motorcycle hire (one you can get for maybe 2K EUR 2nd hand) was about twice the price we payed for renting a close to new (5k km) SUV with full insurance and unlimitted miles. We recommend Centauro, but you can also find other companies with similar prices. - The 'local market' is maybe 2-3 actual local item sellers and 90% counterfeit peddlers. If really like something and you can, negotiate everything below half price and they will probably still make a profit :). Dont't look at labels, they don't mean anything, not even the sizes are right and everything is "Made in Italy" for some reason :). - Camp de Mar beach is really beautiful, with forested hills, sandy beach and clear blue water. You can walk to it in about 20 min from the hotel.

Not Good

Avaliou em 2 de julho de 2022

This is our third time staying here. The first two times were fantastic and this is why we came back. Most likely our last! We had reservations for a poolside view like the last two times. When we checked in at the front desk they said they didn’t have any pool view rooms. I was a little persistent about our reservation so the front desk tried to give us a room overlooking the kiddie pool. This is not how you want to start your vacation! This type of service just ruined my stay right at the beginning

Nice and very quiet hotel, with a view. The hotel was neat and tidy all day long and the the staff was very polite and would always greet you with a smile. There where always a possibility to get a spot around the pool, so no hassle there.. The breakfast was ok and varied. Rooms and bathrooms was fine with good air conditioning.. Overall a very good stay and we will most likely come back in the future.
