Popular restaurant

Avaliou em 31 de janeiro de 2023

Ate here on a Friday night with my daughter and wife. Very busy bar / restaurant. Staff were very friendly. Good selection of "pub grub" on the menu. The burgers were good and portion sizes good. The liver menu option was not so good. Prices are high for what it is. Good GF options.

Terrible stay and terrible reponse from manager

Avaliou em 26 de janeiro de 2023

Fawlty Towers without the humour! very upset after my stay - sarcastic response from manager when I sent a written complaint, which was not surprising as I heard him swearing about a resident whilst I was staying there. Terrible night the first night due to a broken radiator which totally spoilt my stay. Was told they would change me to a new room whilst I was out and came back at 10 pm to find I had not been moved. Could not wait to get home the next day - avoid this one!

Distasteful experience of staff trying to upsell when blatantly lying.

Avaliou em 14 de janeiro de 2023

My partner asked for a glass of house white, the bar server said they do not have a house white, but we have a NZ wine. Came to paying and it was almost twice the price, this was questioned and the manager came out and said they do actually have a white wine, don’t blame my bar staff for trying to upsell from a £6 wine to £10. This to me is considered lying and by no means upselling. Very disappointing to find a pub we come to occasionally to have this kind of service. Positive is that my partner did get a refund. But has put a BAD taste in our mouths.

Great lunch for vegan & non-vegan preferences

Avaliou em 4 de janeiro de 2023

Had booked for lunch on the basis that a full vegan menu is available, and was not disappointed. The mushroom & bean pate starter was delicious. For main course I opted for the marinated beetroot & mushroom bake; though perhaps a little dry on its own, the raspberry jus served in a separate jug finished the dish nicely. My non-vegan but vegetarian companions enjoyed the vegetarian lasagne, and our lonely meat eater was more than happy with the pork and apple pie. We very much appreciated the variety & choice for all preferences. One suggestion would be that all the dishes could do with a tad more seasoning - I think the British palate has moved on, so no need to play safe with the garlic, herbs & spices these days. The atmosphere was friendly & welcome, and service was helpful & prompt.

A comfy, cosy, friendly place - highly recommended

An overnight stop at this excellent hotel was just what we needed. The staff were friendly and extremely helpful. The room, more a discrete, well furnished and warm en-suite apartment (with four poster bed) was spacious and welcoming. Plenty of parking in the town and some in the pub courtyard. We particularly recommend the restaurant (built from stone taken from the Medieval Castle) and bar with fine selection of food (vegetarian and vegan options for main courses and breakfast) and ales. Lots of unique shops, historic sites and natural spaces to explore in and around Castle Cary too. What's not to like? We WILL be back !
