The good points were overshadowed by some pointless corner cutting
In any spa hotel I’d expect to have access to the pool and sauna included in my booking then pay extra for treatments but we were charged €8 each to go in. That doesn’t include robe, slippers or even a towel and we were expected to use the towels from our rooms and pay €1 for a locker. I did see people in robes but we weren’t offered them. Added to that, children were admitted to the spa even though this is an adult only hotel. Numbers are not controlled and it was so crowded that there were no available sunbeds, no hooks to hang towels (were we expected to put these on the floor?) and queues for the sauna and plunge pool. The website describes it as “An oasis of wellness and comfort” but the reality was far from this and no mention that it was not included. I could have put up with it being busy and providing my own towel if it was at least included in the booking. Room 115 overlooks the car park but with a mountain view so not the worst location for a standard room and it has a balcony. The room was spotlessly clean, a decent size for 2 people and bed was huge and super comfortable. Bathroom has a walk in shower and there were complementary miniature shower gel and shampoo and also shower caps. Disappointing that they haven’t switch to more eco-friendly refillable dispensers yet. Bathroom has a magnifying mirror and decent light for putting on makeup and there was a full length mirror in the room itself. However, the room was unaccountably dark with just a lamp over each bedside that were totally useless for reading with (lucky I brought a reading light). Worst of all the AC was switched off centrally which meant that it couldn’t be used. When I asked about this at reception they just said I’d have to open the windows so I was kept awake all night with the noise outside and am covered in mosquito bites. Really not acceptable for a 4 star hotel and I had two very poor night’s sleep instead of the relaxing experience I was looking forward to. The breakfast, and especially dinner, buffets were incredible and very good value for money. A shame there was no tap water available as its perfectly drinkable in this part of Spain but the food was plentiful, varied and reasonably hot. It was beautifully presented and the quality pretty good with a huge choice within each section. Dinner is served between 7 and 9 which seems extraordinarily early for Spain and the dining rooms is chaotic in the extreme. Luckily we arrived both evenings at 7pm so it was relatively calm. But breakfast which is served until 10 (surely 11 at weekends would help the congestion) was absolutely hellish. We arrived at 9.30am and I gave up choosing what I wanted to eat because it was so stressful weaving in and out of people to see what the choices were. Queues for the coffee machine are long and you had to use tiny little cups but I didn’t bother with a second cup as it was too stressful. Although much about this hotel was superb, the good was undone by silly corner cutting that ultimately affected the quality of my stay. I would choose to stay somewhere else next time.
OK but could be a lot better
My boyfriend and I have just came back from a 7 night break at this hotel. We stayed all inclusive. The hotel had a lovely smell to it in reception and everywhere was so clean. We arrived at the hotel early afternoon, our room wasn't ready which was expected as check in wasn't till 2pm. Had a few drinks and then we went straight down for lunch, we were first told that we could not use the restaurant until dinner time as it wasn't on our dinner sheet? But we were put down to have lunch on our last day (we would have flew home by that time) so they swapped it around. Lunch on first impressions wasn't great and not many choices but i think this may have been a quiet day for the hotel as from then on the food was great. We booked a penthouse room (waste of money) the bedroom was very small, the bathroom was a nice size but not much storage space (in fact just a small wardrobe and one set of draws) we were pool view side which was nice if you was standing up because if you sat down you would be staring at a wall - all the other balconies had glass walls but on the top floor its brick (unsure if this was for health and safety reasons) The shower was good and cleaning service ok - our room was only missed once and i think that is because we stayed in our room after 2pm. Very impressed with the all inclusive drinks, you can have bottles of different wine and branded spirits - milkshakes are really nice too. Only down fall - all inclusive finishes at 11 at around 10 past 11 i asked reception for a bottle of water and i had to pay for it. You have a fridge in your room but only once do you get a bottle of water left in your room and that was on the first day. From then on you need to get it from the bar/reception. Had to leave 10 euros per pool/beach towel each time we used one - annoying! The food in the restaurant was really good - the chef walks round chatting and is always smiling giving you advice on what food to try. The area is very dated and scruffy looking but we visited Barcelona on the train. It was so easy - would highly recommend. The entertainment was great, bar staff were lovely and very chatty. The spa was OK, I planned to go a few times but after the free visit i decided not to bother wasting money. The pool was freezing and the double beds were uncomfortable and smelt horrible. There was also a damp smell near the showers. The pool areas were stunning, the weather wasn't great for us whilst we were there as it was October - we managed to sit around the pool one day and was lovely - can imagine it to be fab in the summer months. The pool bar was shut during our stay so can't comment on that. The gym was again OK, no air con though which was off putting - i opened the door a few times to let some air in but a staff member kept coming and shutting it - frustrating but there is enough equipment to keep you going for a week. Overall we enjoyed our stay - would i come again? probably not only because i know there are a lot better hotels out there which i may pay slightly more for but I know the value for money would be worth it but we still really enjoyed our stay. Met some lovely people and I would still recommend to friends and family if they were in the area
This hotel has potential but there were way too many flaws
I booked this for just short of a weeks holiday. The location is good as a base for travel by train to/from Barcelona and other destinations from Malgrat De Mar station just 10 minutes walk. The hotel on arrival was clean, presentable and everything you would expect from a 4 star hotel pre check-in. Here is my review of my experience with room 740, a penthouse room on the top floor. The room: The first big drawback is there is no kettle and tea/coffee making facilities. Not the first time I've had this in 4 star hotels, however when I've asked at reception I've always had one brought up along with a mug. Not here unfortunately, I was told at reception there are no kettles at all in the entire hotel. The best they could do is offer the bar to boil water for me, for a mug I didn't have. The second big drawback with the penthouse rooms is the seventh floor. Might seem great being on the top floor right? Not in this case due to one big flaw, the lifts. There are three lifts which are all narrow and can accommodate five reasonable sized people, there appeared to be several coach parties of elderley people here, and as soon as someone uses the lift with a walking aid, entirely understandable of course, but the lift is then pretty much fully occupied. In some instances I gave up waiting for a lift and walked the entire seven floors using the stairs which was quicker. The room does however have a nice balcony, and I found it to be overall in clean and well kept condition (see photos) the TV channel choice isn't particulary great unless you're into news channels (I tend to avoid them on holiday) but at least it had Melodia FM on the radio channel. Oh, and bring pen and paper with you, as none is provided in the room (I like the make lists when packing to leave so this was a niusance to me), plus no box of tissues supplied either. For me whilst the room overall is good they let it down with the lack of items provided and the access. The resturant: Same scenario as the room really, potential in a good buffet with plenty of food which is let down by some of the practices in place. The queing can be horrendous at times, don't bother going down for dinner between 1910 and 1930. I got seated in one of the worst areas in the resturant, a corner area where the staff kitchen entrance was opposite and there was no windows. The actual food choice is good overall. At breakfast however, I had a very poor experience on one morning. I was down early for a good choice of table by a window. At your table you are given an double sided card, green one side (vacant), red the other (occupied). When you place the card with the red side facing up, it means you have occupied the table, so effectively solo travellers like myself can leave the table to go to the buffet in the comfort that knowone will take the table in my absence. However, on this one morning, I left the table to fill a cup with hot water for my tea, and came back with my mug to find a member of kitchen staff remove my remaining plates and seat a couple at my occupied table, yes, with the 'red card' still on the table. I told her she had just sat a couple on my occupied table and she just offered me an alternative table, at this point in a full resturant, which was in a worse place. I simply refused and took my mug of tea with me out of the hotel to my room. So as for those 'green and red cards' you're given, they are not worth the paper they are written on. On arrival you are given a day pass to use the spa, given the overall experiences I was having here were average at best, I didn't bother taking them up on this invitation, so I cannot comment on that. The outside pool area is good with plenty of seating. There is some evening entertainment on but I can't really comment on this as I was out and about most evenings. So overall I would say that whilst there is potential here for this to be a top class hotel in the area, there is a lot of things that need to improve.
