Great Location
I've stayed here three times during medical appointments. First time we did not get a nice room because, they said, we did not call in advance over a week ahead. Second time we got a nice room. Third time, I got a REALLY crappy room because all the nice rooms were booked. It had NO windows or air flow, no a/c, and the shower had not been cleaned. I even asked for a nice room near the garden. Not sure I'll ever go back. There are other hotels centrally located.
Centally Located
I enjoy staying in three star hotels because they usually have a history, or were once great, but not so this hotel. It´s location, across the street from the La Merced park and church is great. The Federal building is just steps away, plenty of local restaurants and places to shop. The staff was quite friendly although I do not know if they speak English as I spoke only Spanish to them, they helped with taxies and recommendations for eating. The main historical museum is less than three blocks and you will pass other intersting historical sights. My room was clean, although the furnishing were basic and the pillows were hard. There is a nice quiet inner patio where you can read or enjoy something to drink, you have to provide your own although there is a menu for Burger King and another local restaurant that will deliver. I can recommend Hotel La Merced for its price and location.
Good value small hotel
I usually search out hotels in the "Bed & Breakfast/Inn" category - La Merced's #1 rating & excellent price (I paid $27 CDN for a single room) made it an easy choice. I had room 33 in the colonial section of the hotel. The room was small & basic, but perfectly adequate for a single person. This room might be less than ideal for a couple as the double bed is up against the wall. There are different room configurations available, though. The ceiling fan was adequate to cool the room during my December stay. In hotter weather, you might miss A/C as the shutters cannot be opened without sacrificing all privacy. The wifi worked well in the room. The reception staff were pleasant. Location is fine-about 5-10 minutes to walk to the main plaza. TV had 27 Sky TV channels-don't know if any were in English, I didn't turn it on. Bathroom was compact, but perfectly functional. The shower curtain doesn't keep the water within the shower stall though--no bathmat & only 1 towel for a single guest- so no mop up possible. I was initially delighted to have a room that looked out onto the pretty courtyard. I was less delighted when I found out that the colonial rooms are in no way sound proof. This may or may not be a problem. For the most part the hotel and the surrounding area are quiet at night. There were hundreds of people in the Jardin Nunez during the days leading up to the day of the Virgen of Guadelupe but there was no noise from the Jardin audible in the room. The issues I did have: there was a courtyard table directly under my window. Another guest conducted loud cellphone/Skype conversations there about 9:30 PM & might as well have been in the room with me. There also were loud fireworks during the night which happens during the Virgen of Guadelupe festivities. I suspect I could have paid more to be at the Ceballos in the main plaza and had more issues with noise from the cathedral bells. An earlier reviewer mentioned there were no window screens - this is no longer the case- my window was screened. Although I have included some negative comments, this should not be considered a negative review- this hotel represents excellent value & I would definitely consider it again, should I return to Colima.
Superb and tranquil garden.
Stayed in this hotel two nights in a very small, very clean single room, with a view of the gardens. The street was unremarkable, and it was a surprise to find this hotel. It was a tranquil and a treat to rest in the beautiful gardens after visiting Colima and Comala.
Attractive courtyard
I stayed in this hotel for two nights on a recent trip through Colima. The hotel itself is very quiet; even though the property is right on the Jardin Nunez, you don't really notice any noise. The room itself was just fine if a bit dark. If it's natural light I wanted, all I had to do was open the door onto a beautiful, well-manicured courtyard and patio that lends the place a Spanish colonial feel and slows the pace of life. There are comfortable couches and chairs on the patio surrounding the courtyard, making this a convenient place to read, check email, or just veg out with a beer. The Jardin Nunez is only a few blocks from the main plaza and the market, so the location is great. There are other properties around the centro that seem more commercial, so this is an attractive choice, with reasonable rates, too.
