Ard na Sidhe near Killorglin Ireland is a most beautiful place, a hidden gem, semi-secret. We highly recommend it and will certainly come back again. The Team are amazing: real professionals and so nice people like Sandra, Mary and Debbie make your feel as if you were staying in their own home. Hannah in the lounge was very kind to us also on our first evening. David chef de cuisine prepared beautiful dishes at dinner, local Irish and European. The breakfasts are a delight. The gardens are so beautiful, swimming in the lake was a treat and refreshing. The wild dear that came to the garden...We had two garden suites. We miss the place. Top class and thank you to the Team there for a super holiday.
A Disappointing Stay in a “Faux Fancy” Country House

It is with a heart as heavy as a flank of venison that I sit to write this forlorn review of this property. I also preface this review with the caveat that I do *not* as a rule leave review of this nature about establishments, but am doing so in this case because of the superlative lack of detail, care and attention that a location at this price point should be offering their guests.
I stayed for two nights in a Superior Room in the main house, with dinner in the restaurant included on one night. This package was EUR365 per night.
The lady checking me in was polite and accommodating. Checkin was uncharacteristically swift for a country house as notable as this. No regaling of the history of the house, not a word about the picnic lunch or rowboat that could be rented - I overheard about these extras whilst sitting in the lounge on the evening of day two of my trip.
I was immediately and unfortunately disappointed upon being shown to my room. It was a featureless rectangle, with a bathroom that contained only a shower. All superior rooms on the site, and in the house (as gazed upon from the floorplan on the back of the door) had bay windows, or interesting architectural features. The room was also looked into by windows on the open corridor of the second floor - bad design.
When I registered my disappointment and shock at this visually boring room being what I paid for, I was met with befuddled nonchalance and the excuse that “it’s the modern thing that hotel rooms mostly have showers” and “our superior rooms range in size, next time you should request a specific room”. Boo to that.
General House Comments
The fresh flowers throughout the house were wilted on our arrival. The water was yellow, with a circle of scum around the edge of each vase. On checkout three days later, the same flowers were in the same water throughout the house.
The garden was full of beautiful hydrangeas. A house manager with an eye to detail would ensure bouquets were kept fresh, with tasteful, unusual, eye-pleasing blooms.
I sat in the lounge for four hours during my stay (the highlight of my time here) and heard the same single album of muzak the entire time. This also played in the dining room at breakfast both mornings and dinner one night. The same 11 tracks of muzak - not instrumental music, literal muzak from an elevator in a backstreet motel.
The place is full of nondescript prints, pillows and throws. Why aren’t they from local craftspeople, and promoted as such? South Kerry and the surrounding counties have countless such items.
Breakfast was both a rushed and laborious affair. I ordered Eggs Benedict on the first day and the entire circle of plate was drenched in Hollandaise, which I had to send back. On day two, the pots of conserves placed on my table as I sat down were all already opened and used. The dinner on night one was fine, but served so quickly the entire dinner of three courses was over in 50 minutes. Same muzak album playing from breakfast, which my earholes at this stage were entirely sick of.
32 acres of garden await anyone who wants to explore - full of blooms which would look wonderful as cut flowers in the vases of the house…
Some of the staff were excellent and friendly and professional. Some of the staff were incredibly junior and inexperienced, to the point of awkwardness. Not what one expects at this price point.
Lastly, when I brought my disappointments with my room and (some) meals to the attention of the check-out person or head waitperson, I was met with befuddlement and dumbfounded amazement. I was told to “book a different room the next time”.
Lovely relaxing stay

We enjoyed a three night stay here recently. It's in a remote and quiet spot on the shore of Caragh Lake. Our room in the main house was comfortably furnished and very quiet. It had a view over the gardens. The water pressure was fabulous so the showers were particularly good. There is no TV in the rooms or in the hotel, just what we needed. Wifi was mediocre and mobile coverage poor. In other words, a "Low Tech" experience. All the staff were helpful and well trained. The quality of the meals, both breakfast and dinner, was excellent with an emphasis on local ingredients and produce. We enjoyed walking through the beautiful grounds and along the lakeshore.

Garden room with terrace.
Small room but beautifully portioned.
Grounds are excellent, made for exploring, leading down to Lake.
Quiet is an understatement. A wonderful getaway with no TV but great WiFi.
Exceptional food and generous amounts. I had 3 desserts on my first night.

Stayed here for one night as a treat to my mother. Service was somewhat lacking and blatantly inexperienced. Dinner service seemed lax and our server tried to take my plate while my cutlery was still in hand, it was obvious I hadn’t yet finished the course. Every table but ours got chocolates with their last course. I have had far superior service at 3 star establishments. The difference in service between this establishment and their sister properties is glaring. Overrated and disappointing.
