The low point of my Via Francigena
Avaliou em 15 de agosto de 2018
I am walking the Via Francigena. I look forward to my evening meal. I booked this hotel because it had a restaurant. After 29 km of walking on a hot Saturday afternoon, I checked into be told “If (really - if?) you want to eat tonight you have to go to the Intermarché supermarket - 1 km The restaurant is closed. Breakfast is at 8am. 7€ for a croissant, fruit juice and coffee”. The room had no towels and I had to walk around to find someone as no one was on reception. I got some, but my advice is - check first before getting undressed. The owner followed me and remonstrated in the street when I complained. “It’s a marriage” he said. Hotel guests therefore are ignored when there is a wedding. I could have been contacted. A cold collation could have been made. Nothing was done. Guests count for nothing evidently. So - here I sit with - on this ‘3 star’ hotel’s insistence- eating a supermarket sandwich. Gy is quite a sad place. There is one other restaurant in Gy - also closed. A boulangerie - closed Saturday afternoon. Tourist office - Closed. The lowest point on my Via Francigena - so far. It is not a place that I wish to visit again. If it is not dead then it is on life-support.

Useful stopover

Comfortable hotel with good-sized rooms, pool and gardens. Some things could have done with a bit of "snagging" (e.g. fittings in bathroom) but overall very good value for money. The restaurant is a couple of doors away down the street and seems ok – there were pizzas as well as rather more ambitious meals. Breakfast ok. The village is rather sad, having lost more than half its population in the last century, but there's some fine scenery and interesting places around to visit if you feel like staying more than one night.

DON'T stay on a Sunday!!! No service AT ALL!!!

We were walking the Via Francigena from Canterbury, England to Rome, Italy - so we didn't have a vehicle! I booked this accommodation in November 2015 (6 months prior to our stay) and informed the owners of our walking status and the fact that we would require a meal - they assured us all would be fine. I even sent them another email just prior to leaving Australia to confirm our stay & the fact that we would require a meal. When we arrived, after walking 45.7km that day, there wasn't anybody at the hotel, but after a lot of knocking a lady arrived and did let us in. She gave us a key and told us where our room was, her restaurant wouldn't be open for dinner and nor would the pizzeria next door. This meant we had to walk to another town to get a meal!!! We weren't offered any beverages or food and of course, we were very thirsty, hungry & tired. She then disappeared. After a shower I went back to reception to see if I could find somebody and purchase drinks and a snack - all without success. We had some dried fruit in our packs and that had to be our dinner, together with a drink of water. We were extremely upset as we required food after such a long day and the owner/staff just didn't care - not even enough to offer us bread and coffee. Another group (French) arrived later on and they had cycled all day and they were extremely annoyed about the lack of service. If we had been told prior to arrival that we wouldn't be able to get either food or drinks we would have stayed elsewhere! However the hotel itself was very nice and our room and bathroom were lovely and very modern. Our rating of this hotel would be substantially higher for the actual rooms but the total lack of service reduced it. Breakfast was quite nice and the lady at reception the next morning was very friendly. My recommendation to all would just be NOT to stay there on a Sunday!!

We stayed here for a family wedding. Our party booked almost the entire hotel. 18 adults and 11 children under 12. The rooms are all very recently refurbished and very clean and comfortable. The breakfasts are good quality standard continental. The children enjoyed the swimming pool and also the table tennis table and tennis court. The staff were extremely accommodating of our needs and allowed us use of all the facilities to eat our self prepared meals on Sunday evening when nothing is open in Gy. The Studios are excellent, large and well equipped with a fridge and hob and full cooking equipment for four. Note that if travelling with babies the hotel has only one cot.

Stayed there on a business trip. The hotel room was payed for by a business partner, so i don't know about the price. Room and bathroom were very clean and spacious. The mattress was to my absolute liking. Breakfast was a bit poor from choices, but very well presented. I recommend it.
