HOW TO RUIN A 60th BIRTHDAY
Avaliou em 15 de Outubro de 2021
Booked 4 rooms for 7 people for my mums 60th birthday
My mum and dad tested positive for covid the day before the booking. Booking advised that the cairn hotel would discuss whether the hotel would allow us to rebook one of the rooms given the unfortunate circumstances
Management at the cairn advised the cancellation cost was 160 pound and the room could not be rescheduled
As a family we did not want to attend given the occasion and with the parents being unable to attend physically and legally i advised we would still attend for the other rooms but asked if they could:
Option 1: Reschedule the date for my mum and dad to attend once they were better and we would pay commision to booking.com so the hotel didnt lost money
Option 2: if option 1 wasnt possible refund us money for the one single room we booked and my brother would stay in the double room instead
Option 3: provide maybe an incentive such as 50 pound food credit if my mum and dad would stay again (bearing in mind we would still be paying 160 pound)
The hotel advised they could do do anything or even offer us credit. I was disgusted at the lack of empathy provided given the situation.
We had to pay 620 pounds in the end for 3 rooms.
I have never experienced such poor hospitality
On another note the toilet was soiled on arrival and the building needed a littlE tlc

Hotel looks grand from the outside and this continued into the foyer. It’s an old building and this was reflected in the on-going maintenance around the hotel but acknowledgement notices accompanied this. We arrived early, before check-in at 3pm and was disappointed that we could not even get a cup of tea from the bar as it was closed!
For a big hotel, I wasn’t expecting the bar service to be limited. Our room was spacious and clean and the bed was very comfortable . Bathroom was big and white fluffy towels provided. Shower head took a bit of working as it did not sit in holder correctly so the spray was projected straight ahead at you or over your head unless you were prepared to perch at the end of the Bath to catch it.
Tea & coffee facilities were presented in a caddy liner, at first I thought due to COVID regulations but as all sachets were individuals i couldn’t understand why they were not just on a tray as usual. Each tray would/ could be wiped after each visit as the rooms are cleaned…surely?
On day 2, our bag of replenished tea/coffee supplies were just left outside our room door!
We booked room only which gives you the option of breakfast or not (payable on site). First morning we went down to breakfast with intention of paying , to be told ‘they were fully booked’. Not sure how that works when breakfast is 7.15-9.45 a rolling breakfast approach 🤔.
We were informed that we had to book our breakfast the night before. The lady in the green top did offer us a table 10 mins later to be fair
Off we went to book the following day’s breakfast, only to be told they were already fully booked!!
How can that be??
We were directed to a frame on the reception desk (see image)
Responses were very clipped and I soon found out the reason why….coach tours!
3 coaches were due in that day and the staff seemingly don’t look like they can cope under that pressure that comes with large bookings.
It seems too easy to dismiss the smaller bookings, even down to minor conversations as they begin to get ready to receive the bigger bookings….such a shame!
My advice would be…check if coach tours are booking at the same time as you, if so, avoid this hotel because they can’t cope!

This hotel, where I had taken a no-cancellation booking, cancelled two rooms with three days notice, relying on a booking agency, with no personal contact, no apology when I contacted them and no attempt to relocate me. A ruined weekend. Do not go to this hotel.

Helpful staff. The interior decoration of communal areas and restaurant was quite nice but let down by the state of the bedrooms which were in desperate need of some TLC. The bedroom window ledge was dusty and dirty but as I'd taken my own antibacterial wipes that wasn't too much of a problem. I did feel the need to antibact the rest of the room however as a result. The bathroom was in a poor state. Out of the 24 floor tiles 11 were cracked quite badly, the sink was chipped on the inside and, one of my pet hates, .... the shower curtain was grubby (no excuse). We had booked this hotel in Dec 2019 and, due to Covid, had rescheduled our visit several times. On booking for this weekend I had been unaware that there was a tribute band on as I would not have booked this particular date. The music was so loud and went on until midnight. When booking on the Internet it had not specified that this particular date was scheduled for a tribute band. Worth the £118 paid? No definitely not. Hot Breakfast was cold. Breakfast staff were helpful but seems the hotel may be struggling with the post-covid service requirement rather than it being a serve yourself buffet
Room for improvement

Stayed at the hotel last night. Lovely staff and bar area. An 90 minute wait to check in due to late lorry delivery for linen which was no fault of the staff and they were very polite however we feel they could have offered a free drink during the wait as originally told an hour wait. Room very basic and could do with updating. TV signal very poor and could only get BBC 1. One of the glasses in the bathroom were dirty. Breakfast was lovely, great selection of food and staff very friendly. Overall we found that a double room for one night was overpriced. Just needs a bit of TLC.
