Went for 1 night only on 3 course dinner bed and breakfast deal. Overall a good stay. We stopped in a superior room but it was ok but not superior I would say just a standard room. Nice and warm good shower. Would recommend on a deal but maybe not full price a lovely old hotel maybe a bit rough around the edges but understandable with the age. Great location and plenty of free parking. Nice touch on check in a box of local toffee. Only really one bad bit this is regarding the staff only one member though. The girl chef that came out to serve carvery what a joke. She was ignorant and rude served the dinner like it was a prison slapped it on the plate and no manners definitively need to keep her in kitchen as chef and not dealing with customers . Retraining needed but not sure it would work. On the plus side the waiter who served us starters and desserts do not know his name but half Brazilian half Italian was brilliant need more like him say a big thank you to him and give head waiters job. Overall a good stay if getting a deal with great location

Stayed here on a coach trip. In all there were four coaches being catered for whilst we were there. Not a comfortable situation. We paid for a superior room - not sure what extra we got - no water, no robes for example . Poor building,once beautiful now in need of a lot of expensive TLC! Staff very helpful and friendly except man who served on the carvery every evening, not even a good morning or good evening in response to a greeting. Speaking of food - in our opinion very low grade meals, maybe as it was made to cater for so many. Would not have chosen this hotel if we had travelled on our own.

Anniversary visit

Went for our wedding anniversary as we have done for several years barring the pandemic. Excellent bedroom (described as superior). Very comfortable. Had three course meal. Starter and sweet served at table, main served carvery style which limits the choice but what we had was nice and hot. Good full English breakfast. Good choice and hot. Nice bar area with plenty of tables. All staff were pleasant especially in the bar. Hotel a little jaded but a little cosmetic improvement could bring back some of its Victorian splendour. Huge car park, and free. Will be back for our next anniversary.

Lovely hotel but needs to be updated. Its tired and the food is certainly not the best. Long queues at the buffet bar. Staff are pleasant. This hotel has character and some lovely features. I am gluten intolerant and some gluten free cereal at breakfast would be ideal. I now take my own when travelling, as most hotels don't provide!!!

This hotel is a faded glory. One expects that big Victorian Hotels will be shabby and out of sorts - despite the money the organisation has spent. The family room was OK, a bit shabby and a bit grubby, but OK. The staff were a mixed bunch, some were great, a few didn't seem to care. The position of the Cairn is good for the town and exhibition centre and the abundant parking is a big bonus. If this were all, this would be a three star review. However.....we arrived on Thursday. A semi-permenant sign told us that room only guests couldn't; have breakfast. This was the case for all three nights of our stay. In addition, dinner was fully booked for all three nights. A few enquiries revealed, grudgingly, that this is the usual situation. Browsing Trip Advisor I find that many reviewers have called attention to this problem. We availed ourselves of the offer of bar food - and this was mediocre. It is not honest to advertise that your hotel has facilities if these are not reasonably available to guests. I accept that restaurants can be fully booked and that breakfast times can be crowded but the situation at the Cairn Hotel was unacceptable. The going rate for accommodation with no breakfasts and no restaurant is considerably less than what we paid at the Cairn.
