Period hotel in historic market town

Avaliou em 26 de junho de 2022

We stayed here right in the centre of town, from here we could visit family close by. The staff are freindly and helpful. Our room (nr 7) had a four-poster bed with exposed beams on the ceiling, possibly mid 17th century, but was none the less well equiped and definitely this century, with a comfortable bed, 2 comfy armchairs, plenty of storage and electric sockets! The en-suite facility was excellent, very smartly done, with space to put out our toiletries as well as a vanity unit with even more storage (too much storage?), and lovely white fluffy towels. We stayed the one night (Sat/Sun), breakfast comprised a small buffet together with a "full English" fried breakfast, of excellent quality, really set us up for the journey home. As we were visiting & eating with family we did not sample the lunch or evening menus, although what we saw on their web-site would have suited us. The lounge and bar areas of the hotel were a traditional rural pub, which was busy during our visit, and our room overlooked the street outside but neither seemed to distrub our sleep. The only thing we did not like were the light switches in our room which did not switch ON/OFF very well, they were of a "trendy"style rather than "efficient" one.

It’s a Men’s toilet!!

Avaliou em 4 de junho de 2022

A friend and I visited the Hay festival and whilst there popped into this pub for a spot of lunch and a pint. I went to use the toilet when I opened the door to go into the toilets the stench was horrendous when I went back to the bar to collect my pint I said to the person serving behind the bar that the smell was terrible in the toilets he just looked at me and said it’s a men’s toilet. We were about to order some food but cancelled it I can’t believe the attitude

Pretty shocking lunch!

We opted for 3 "Sharing" dishes at a cost of £21. These included - 1. Beef Brisket croquettes with a smoky mayo. the brisket was so tough, it was actually inedible! 2. Crispy belly pork bites with parsnip puree. The pork was ok but the parsnip puree was tasteless. 3. Seared garlic king prawns with a satay dipping sauce. The prawns still had their shells on, were swimming in a pool of oil (containing whole garlic cloves!) with a tiny pot of unpleasant satay sauce. We couldn't eat these without getting covered in the oily mess! Added to this, the loos were not very pleasant. One of the doors in the ladies couldn't even be locked!! We will not be returning and would not recommend eating here....Sorry folks but this pub needs some serious work!

Great Lunch time meal.

We both ordered the beer battered cod and chips. It not not disappoint. Large pieces of cod with light crispy beer batter, mushy peas and tartare sauce. Washed down with a well kept pint of Butty Bach for my husband and a nice Sauvignon blanc for me.

Good food service a bit iffy

Locals recommended this place, I’ve often walked past but not gone in. Family lunch for 3. 2 of us got our food after 30 minutes, my food order was sent to the kitchen wrong so I had to wait another 20 mins. The food was delicious when it arrived but I’m not sure it was worth the nearly hour long wait. The staff were friendly and apologetic but perhaps not quite as slick as they could be. I’d go again for the food but not if I was in a rush!
