Great place to stay

Very nice hotel/pub in a great location. Lovely room, very clean. The lady that showed us to our room was friendly and helpful as were the lads behind the bar. Great meal in the pub in the evening. The only issue we had was parking, pub car park was full when we arrived and we did struggle to find somewhere to park as it was a busy Saturday. On phoning the pub for help they told us where we could find a parking spot just up the road. Will definitely visit again

Great food and even better ponytail

Well where do I start. This pub is the best pub I have ever been to. The decor, food, drinks, staff… beautiful. I especially thought the guy with the pony tail was not only charming but had beautiful hair, (please tell me your hair care routine!). The cheese and onion pie is the best I have ever had, the Guinness is the best I’ve had other than in Ireland. The sticky pudding was to die for! I will be back!

Disappointing

To call our room, Room 6, a ‘boutique suite’ is misleading. It has an L-shaped corridor leading to the bedroom and there is an armchair in a dark corner, but that’s all. The bedroom is roomy enough and the bathroom is plenty large enough with a roll top bath and a separate shower but it’s cold and I’ll-lit like the rest of the room. Cold LED lights don’t help. The old character of the building shows in creaking floors and you can hear the people in the next room walking around, as well as the chatter from the bar dining area below. The furnishings have mostly been updated and are trendily coloured but the bed needs a new mattress. Breakfast was good. It’s a popular eatery, so book if you want to eat. There’s nowhere else for residents to sit in the evening. Also, be prepared for the tight car park. When we booked there was only Room 6 available, and we had to pay in full on booking. At £170 it turned out to be poor value. With a good TripAdvisor rating we expected much better.

Good apart from the creepy manager

The food was better than average but not worth the price, the drinks absolutely on point, the main reason for a 2 star review is because me and my family were made very uncomfortable when the manager was very obviously flirting with underage female staff in full view of our table - it made the whole experience very uncomfortable

Totally Disappointing!

I shall begin with how we came to book this accommodation for our 20th Wedding Anniversary. We googled "cosy, country inns in Yorkshire". When the White Lion Hotel popped up in the search results it ticked all of our boxes. Food looked amazing, the bar looked cosy with an open log fire, the rooms appeared beautifully decorated and well cared for and overall the hotel had excellent reviews particularly with regard to the staff and the cleanliness. We didn't hesitate to book. On arrival we received a warm welcome and as part of the process booked a table in the bar to dine that evening. We requested a particular table for 7.30pm and were told it wouldn't be a problem, although we were advised that last food orders were taken between 7.30pm and 8pm, despite their website stating that food is served until 8.45pm. Once in our room (Room 3) a few minor issues immediately jumped out at us. Namely the missing stags head from above the bath (shown very prominently in all the web photos on this site and others), the poorly secured door knob on the main door, the smears on the full length mirror, the waste bin that hadn't been emptied and the sticky rings on one of the bedside tables. None of them major, but when combined not what you would expect for a £150 per night suite. When we began to get ready for dinner we discovered that the shower was very disappointing. At first the water came out as a mere trickle. After turning the control knob backward and forwards for several minutes a steady flow was finally achieved. Note however, that this is by no means a power shower and there is no real temperature and flow control. Once you find the point on the knob that gives you a comfortable temperature you have to accept that the flow is what it is. Not at all adequate for washing shampoo out of my fairly thick hair. We also discovered at this point that there are only 5 channels available on the 26" flat screen TV. Once down in the bar we discovered that our table hadn’t been reserved and was occupied. We decided to order a drink whilst we considered what to do as we particularly wanted that table by the lovely open fire. We mentioned the table issue to the young barman who was apologetic but didn’t really offer us a solution despite us pointing out that we were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary & had spent a fair amount of money to stay & dine there. After a few minutes of sitting in an adjacent room another member of staff came to apologise for forgetting to reserve the table and advised that it was now available. We spent a very lovely next hour enjoying excellent food & good service. However, once the clock passed 9pm the fire was allowed to die down and was pretty much out by 9.30pm. At 9.45pm we were advised that they were calling last orders at the bar. If we had known that this would be the case we would have settled in somewhere else in the town to spend our anniversary evening. Subsequently, more customers arrived in the next 15 minutes and were turned away! This was in addition to a customer being refused a cup of coffee before 9pm because the coffee machine had been switched off. Breakfast the following morning seemed disorganised and rushed, not at all relaxing. Probably because it’s only served during a one hour period. I overlooked the broken spout on the teapot on that occasion. The food we had was very good, but there is a distinct lack of a healthy option. No fresh fruit or yogurt, just a very over-facing and wasteful granola bowl. The overall experience was just a little lacking. We decided to eat elsewhere the second evening. Not because of the food, but because we were now beginning to resent spending any more of our hard earned cash at an establishment that didn’t live up to the expectations it had initially presented. After dinner we decided that it would be nice to get settled in the bar again with a bottle of wine to round off our stay. Upon arrival at a few minutes after 8pm, we discovered that there was no roaring fire, just a few embers. Ten minutes later it was practically out so my husband went to the bar and asked if another log could be put on it. He was told that they had let it die down because there weren’t many people in that evening. Admittedly it wasn’t as busy as the previous evening, but what does that say to the customers who have spent money on food or drinks or both? You’re not as important as the people who haven’t chosen to come in tonight? After we expressed our displeasure at having just spent £25 on a bottle of wine, the fire was reluctantly re-lit. Another couple arrived shortly after us and asked for a menu. They were told that food had finished. When they asked if they could just get a couple of bowls of chips they were told the fryers were turned off and advised which other establishments in the town were still serving food. It was a different young barman behind the bar tonight. This one spent at least 70% of his shift on his mobile phone! He had already asked another member of staff just after we arrived what time he would be finishing.....clearly didn’t want to be there! By just after 9pm the fire was once again pretty much out despite the fact that several more tables worth of people had arrived and the bar was now fairly busy. When we once again asked if it could be re-kindled, we were told no as last orders was at 9.30pm!! We promptly nipped off to the local off-licence and bought our next bottle of wine from them! Things didn’t improve on our final morning. Once again I got the teapot with the broken spout and my husband’s side plate already had pepper on it as if previously used by someone else. Once back in our room I decided to check just how clean it was. In short, not very! The layer of dust on the picture frames, the top of the wardrobe, the inside of the wardrobe and the bathroom plumbing hadn’t settled in just a few days. Having not used the drawers in the bedroom I felt compelled to check them and was not surprised to find dirt & debris in them. If we had paid £70 or £80 per night for our room I would have just put it down to experience and not been bothered to write a review. But having paid £150 per night for what was advertised as a “deluxe suite” in an establishment that claims to offer excellent service, I felt compelled to warn others not to waste their money. The White Lion Hotel is a beautiful old inn serving excellent food but the management of this establishment leaves a lot to be desired, especially in the current difficult economic climate.
