Old Hotel Refurbished Beautifully

Weekend suite was roomy, clean, excellent bedding and all new. Good valet service or cabs available. There is a coffee shop off the lobby. This is one of the Hilton Curio collection and is a landmark in Des Moines, restored to its original luster.
A Dream of a Stay

I've stayed at hotels on both coasts and at similar historic hotels, but this might be the best hotel I've stayed at. I decided to do a brief Labor Day trip from Wisconsin and return to my home state, finally visiting Des Moines. The care the management has put into restoring the hotel is breathtaking with a stunning lobby you can marvel at from the street. Front desk staff and the valet were very courteous and I appreciated the more high tech touches, such as texts from the front desk to see how everything was and the ability to text from my room to have my car brought around (perfect for Iowa winters!). The room itself was beautiful, but cozy. I was upgraded to a corner king room, which had a large entry way, and gave me plenty of room to stretch out. It was almost too much space for me -- the bathroom was massive -- but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'd highly recommend that room for couples that don't want to be on top of each other. The bed was very cozy and, in the words of "Victor/Victoria," the bathroom was a religious experience. I wanted to take a shower again during my stay, something I never think as a curly girl. I even managed to stop by both of the restaurants at the hotel. I'm known as a coffee snob and Hobnob had really good coffee. The Brussels Sprouts at Proudfoot and Bird are delicious and go great with wine. The lighting and decor in both space also match the times you'd go there. Hobnob is lighter, perfect for starting the day, while Proudfoot and Bird was dim, but soft and warm. It was like the space equivalent of a nightcap. I can't stop raving about this hotel since my stay. I hope I have a reason to go back to Des Moines just so I can stay here.

Beautiful hotel. Literally the ONLY problem for us was not having real milk or H&H for coffee in the morning. They didn’t even sell it in their little store in the lobby. We loved the hotel AND the wonderful city of Des Moines. Highly recommend a visit.

What a gorgeous hotel this is!!! From the moment you step in, you’ll be in for a treat. Beautiful lobby/lounge, stylish lifts, state-of-the art gym (all Techno gym equipment), friendly receptionist, elegant details in the room decor. Everything was great! EXCEPT the state of the room. We had a nice suite (it was, once again, gorgeous). When we walked though, in all drawers and cupboard doors were left open, the rubbish bin wasn’t emptied, there were lots of hairs in the shower and there were two (empty, clearly rubbish) shoe boxes left in one of the cupboards. WAY below par.
A wonderful stay at Fort Des Moines Hotel

This trip was a vacation to see Minnesota, Wisconsin & Iowa. We're from PA, close to Philly, so these states were truly eye-opening. They are so clean, quiet, loaded with outdoor sculpture, great hiking trails. Also the highways are great, not crowded at all, food was well priced & delicious. The night life (outdoor concerts & comedy clubs) are fantastic. We saw concerts free at Mile of Music in Appleton, WI.
