Definitely a hotel I recommend!

I am utterly perplexed by some of the critical reviews of this hotel, because I'm currently staying here and it has been an excellent experience so far. I should add that in my work for a specialized agency of the UN, I travel the world, staying in many hotels, and I have lived for many years in Switzerland - widely acknowledged as the capital of the hospitality industry, so my standards are high. I last stayed here five years ago, but as soon as I entered the lobby housekeeper Beverley welcomed me back and even remembered my name. Her warmth together with that of receptionist Natalie were heartwarming and again today, I had a happy chat with team member Laura: another friend from my previous stay. Indeed, the kindness of the staff here more than compensates for a vaguely tired decor. Anyway, aren't some of the most celebrated hotels around the world loved precisely for their old-worldly faded charm? It seems to me that this hotel has got its priorities straight. My immaculately clean room is spacious with plenty of drawer and wardrobe space; a very comfortable Hypnos bed; a choice of firm and soft pillows; and a huge snuggly duvet, whilst the bathroom is state-of-the-art. Each day the housekeeper responsible for servicing the room leaves a signed card along with some chocolate mints: a delightfully personal touch! This is a hotel I have no hesitation in recommending.
No sleep possible at this hotel due to burgular alarm and management does not care about its customers

Stayed at this hotel many times but this was a nightmare. At 3am a very loud burgular alarm went off at the property next to our hotel window. It was extremely loud and piercing and completely stopped ours, and others, sleep. Tried to contact concierge but he was not there. At 3.20, with no information or concierge we gave up, got dressed, and left the hotel. We then saw a night porter as we left who told us it was a regular issue and the owner was being called to turn it off ( it is a car dealership). We confirmed we were leaving and would call the hotel next day. We spent two hours driving home. When we called the hotel next day they said it was not their problem, we should ring the garage! I said it was their duty of care for their guests to be able to sleep and this appeared a regular issue based on concierge comments. She said manager was out but to call next day which I did. He was then unavailable and since then have left three messages to call me and calls never came. This hotel does not believe it should offer its guests a good nights sleep. It does not care about its customers and the manager does not give a damn. Stay away from this hotel if you want to sleep!
No air conditioning in bedrooms

Visited this hotel on the second hottest weekend of the year. Unfortunately this Holiday Inn is located within a very old building and only the public areas have air conditioning. Even with the curtains and windows closed, once you had people in the room, the temperature would rise. And using the same year-round duvets was totally inappropriate in that heat. I ended up removing the duvet from its cover and just sleeping under that, with the supplied desk fan running all night. While the bathroom appeared to have been refurbished, the bedroom itself was very dated, and the room and furnishings were showing their age. On the plus side, the location is good, the staff are very personable, and if you choose to dine there, the portions are generous, though the breakfast selection was slightly less than I’ve seen at other Holiday Inns, and during my stay the fresh fruit selection was minimal and the melon under-ripened. If I find myself in the Ipswich area again - particularly if it might be warm - I’ll try the other Holiday Inn in the town.
Other hotels in the local area

I work in this area every 6/8 weeks and usually stay at the Holiday Inn on London Road which is immaculate and the staff are professional. Unfortunately, I booked this place and it wasn’t the best experience,on arrival in the car park there was rubbish everywhere with the local Seagulls having a feast. Check in was a little strange as I requested a high floor at the back of the hotel and was advised I would be on the ground floor, pointed out I had received conformation that a room on the high floor was reserved. Not the case apparently, after several minutes was offered a high floor with a single bed so declined and went to my room. Great sized room which you would expect from Holiday Inn which was clean and comfortable. The weather was great in the Ipswich area that afternoon so popped down for a drink after the debacle of checking in, as I walked passed reception after half an hour of checking in I was offered a high floor. Too late in the day to change room, move on ! Visited the restaurant for a meal and after waiting 15 minutes had to go looking for the waitress who was ok, out of Chilli but I understand that with the current climate. Fish & chips was average with mushy peas swimming in water, excellent! The place is worn out and needs a cash injection as it’s very dated and the staff need maybe more training.
Decent for the price

It’s quite a tired hotel and could do with a renovation, however the price does reflect this. The rooms are adequate and all staff we encountered were friendly enough. For the price it’s absolutely fine
