Quaint hotel in quiet environment

Avaliou em 7 de setembro de 2022

Luxury stay at a relatively affordable price. High grades for the swimming pools and the overall atmosphere. I can appreciate the oldish looks and the lack of elevators in these low rise buildings as part of the charm. The only suboptimal part was the plumbing in the room, it was not easy to control the water temperature, and the draining was abnormally slow. An additional advice on using the bus (CD, 5, 6) to move between the hotel and the ferry stop at the port, and avoid the ethically handicapped local cab drivers.

One good experience, oldnhotel

Hotel Continental Terme is an oasis at the dusty end of Ischia Porto. But beware, it is an old hotel, and showing age. One excellent receptionist deserves thanks - Marina helped us solve a reservation problem with couresy and efficiency.

Very Disappointed

We stayed at the Hotel Continental Ischia for a week at the end of Sept. Check in was quick and easy. A member of staff lead us to our room. After going up and down several flights of stairs we arrived at room 339. It was on the 3rd (top) floor on the corner of the block. Room was nothing like the pictures on the web. It was very small, tired, dark, gloomy and depressing. Furniture was out of the ark. We could only get two English speaking channels CNN and another channel. The hotel said BBC was on the TV but we asked a member of staff to help find it but they couldn't. Air con was good. The Balcony in the bedroom was tiny with lots of foliage nearly coming into the bedroom, this also blocked any light getting into room. When we used the shower water leaked onto the floor causing a slip hazard. We thought about requesting a change but we couldn't be botherd and did not plan to be in room much. Breakfast was very basic, not much choice, you had to ask for proper orange juice and they would do you a plain omelette if you asked. Dinner was inedible, possibly the worst food I have had on holiday. The waiters worked really hard but it was like something out of faulty towers. Start by helping yourself to a very basic salad. You ordered your starter and main from your waiter and sat at the same table during your stay. Starters were fine (soup/pasta) but main courses were very strange. I tried sausage, but it was mainly gristle, fish was cold and topped with shaved raw potato I think?? Cheese on toast (cheese not melted on bread not toasted).Tough thin sliced beef in sauce with random veg on side. Stringy spinach most days. Fennel covered in cheese sauce, yuck!!. My husband will eat any thing, even he struggled to eat. After 4 meals we decided to have lunch instead of dinner. Get there at 1 sharp, don't wait politely, get your elbows in otherwise you won't get any thing. It's all gone in about 20 mins. We enjoyed the pools and had no trouble getting sun loungers, however the way the hotel is designed you end up moving around all day chasing the sun. Evening entertainment was very loud, even with our window shut it kept us awake until midnight. Then the next door neighbours would get back and put TV on. We might as well have been in the same room with them. We could hear everything, even bodily functions. They smoked on balcony and the smell crept through. We was glad to go home.

More bad than good!

First of all this is NOT a 4 * hotel. It is 2 to 3 * at most. We booked a superior room half board for a week. When we saw our room which was basically under the road and reception, we asked if it was a superior room we were told no they had none left and were fully booked, no apology, borderline rude! We accepted our fate, very very basic and dated room, no tea/coffee facilities, we were told they don't do this in Italy, which is not true having been to italy before! The room was so noisy not only from the traffic rolling over our head but thd constant traffic in reception and thd walls so thin you could hear every noise from rooms either side and i mean EVERY NOISE! Our safe did not work and nor did the phone, when we reported this we got a shoulder shrug, until i insisted they fix the safe, which they did eventually. The hotel had a conference the weekend we were there so very busy. Location good which one of the stars is for, a gentle 15 min walk gets you into town. The spa was odd, very old fashioned with a row of rolms that resembled horror film rooms and very expensive 30 euros a day just to go in no treatments included. You have to wear a swimking hat to go in the pool??? They saw so ur hair does not go in the pool but seemed acceptable to spit in the pool which lots of people seemed to do??? Staff attitude is generally poor, the nicest person we met was the lovely happy lady who cleaned our room and the head waiter who greeted us warmly. Food......oh god where to start!!!! Breakfast is very basic continental, no hot food at all except uncooked scrambled egg which no.one seemed to eat, also when its gone its gone, they do not seem to refill. The dining room in the evening was like a canteen, bright stark lighting, no atmosphere and 99% of waiting staff should not be allowed near the public!! Seriously i run 2 businesses and if any of my staff had this level (zero) of customer service i would get rid of them instantly, i was actually concerned about one girl who was clearly high on something. Evening meals are hit and miss, some very odd, out of 7 nights i had one nice meal, we generally ate in the day outside of hotel and used evening meal for a snack. Salad bar was like a wrestling match, all that fuss for 5 different things on the salad table, same every night!!!! Would not return, no customer service, poor food, very out dated. I am not fussy but if i work hard all year to pay extra for a nice holiday, which we did then i ferl let down when you end up somewhere like this standatd of hotel. Ischia is beautiful though.

Not As Expected

We chose this hotel, after reading all the 5 star reviews, to celebrate our 25th anniversary but very soon after arrival we were at a loss as to why it had received the high ratings. Our first impression was the abundance of plants and trees and the exterior of the buildings that looked like the pictures, however, when we were shown our room, that was close to the bar/outside eating area, we were amazed how dark, sparse and small it was and the bathroom - we found out the hotel had been built in the 1960's and it didn't look as if it had been touched since. We telephoned reception straight away and asked if another room was available but were told the hotel was full so nothing else available. Needless to say we were very disappointed and not happy that we were being forced to make the best of it for our 10 night stay. We were half board and when we entered the restaurant that evening the first thing we noticed were the lack of people so wondered how the hotel was full. When we were given the menu there was a choice of 4 starters and 4 main courses and a choice of sweets (if you were paying the cost was 40 euros). Unfortunately for me 2 choices from the starters and 2 from the mains were either fish or shellfish every evening, which I do not eat, considerably reducing my choice of food. I was surprised that during our stay there was only 1 pasta dish served with meat!! I appreciate that my own likes/dislikes limited my choice but one evening when I ordered toasted bread with mozarella as a main course I did not expect to get 1 small slice of cut bread with melted cheese on it!! Several nights later one of the mains was' tripe' which has got to be one of the cheapest meals to offer so fail to see how the meals were worth 40 euros. There was also some salad available each evening but always the same things on offer. When we went into breakfast the following morning we were disappointed again at the choices on offer. Some cereal, ham, cheese, tinned and fresh fruit and quite a few cakes (but the same every day). Toast was the ultra thin white, cut bread that's like eating cardboard and the juice on offer was well watered down and tasteless. Unfortunately for me again the only hot choice was scrambled egg (do not eat eggs) and if you asked they would boil or fry them for you. After breakfast we had been invited to attend a meeting with the rep. who asked what our impressions were of the place. Another couple who arrived the previous day told her that they were also very unhappy with their room so contacted reception and were taken to look at four other rooms but as they were smaller than the one they had been given they didn't move. Very odd that they were shown other rooms but we were told the hotel was full which it obviously was not. Another reason we chose this hotel was the fact that many people said it was 10/15 minute walk to the town/shops - when it's really hot I doubt many people could do it in less that 30 mins walking on the narrow, uneven pavement. We had intended going out to several restaurants but we didn't want the walk and the taxi's were 15 euros each way. There were a couple of takeaways next to the hotel but you weren't allowed to take food into the hotel (if you wanted to) and the nearest restaurant was just pizza/pasta. Although we were constantly being told the hotel was full there were never lots of people sitting around the pools so thankfully sun loungers were not saved and there were plenty of them. You had to obtain towels from the spa to use around the pools at a charge of 2 euros each and every time you changed them you had to pay again. Everyone that went in the pools had to wear swimming caps apparently so hair didn't block the system, even the bald men but it was okay if you had a big bushy beard!! We have never been anywhere that has had this ruling so don't know why this place should be different. We decided to have lunch one day in the bar/restaurant but didn't realise it wasn't open for very long so we decided on a snack instead but a small toasted ham and cheese sandwich (no side salad) was 4.50 euros and 1 portion of fries 5 euros. When we booked we had the choice of a very early flight home or one at 9.30 pm so we chose the latter thinking it would give us virtually an extra day around the pool. We asked if it would be possible to keep our room (pay for it if necessary) but were told no as the hotel was 'full' but we could have it until midday. We asked if there would be another room available to just have a shower but were told there wasn't as the hotel was 'full'. After leaving our room we had to sit around waiting to be picked up at 4.30 pm and we saw hardly anyone checking in and were very unhappy at the attitude we received from reception staff. We have travelled all over the world to all continents and never not been offered a room to use and we wished we had left in the morning. We were very disappointed overall and wished we had chosen somewhere else for our celebration. If you are considering Ischia as a destination we would suggest you choose a hotel nearer to the port, shops, bars and restaurants. There are also lots of steps at this hotel that may be a problem for some.
