Beautiful tents under the stars but poor dining experience

Avaliou em 30 de setembro de 2022

We felt lucky that we found Under Canvas for our one night in between the Grand Canyon, Lower Antelope Canyon and Monument Valley. The tent itself did not disappoint, the only thing that was not great were the pillows, which were the same weird under sized rubber pillows as El Tovar and not at all comfortable. The bed itself is fabulous as is every thing else in the tent. But do remember it is a tent so even with ear plugs, the wind and tent flapping can disrupt sleep for some, as it did for me but not my husband. He did wake earlier than usual but that was fantastic as he saw several shooting stars before the sun came up. The young woman who checked us in and later held a short fantastic sunset yoga stretch was great, as were the fire pits and s’mores after dinner. The only short coming was the food and food preparer. My trout was delish but my husband ordered the burger and what arrived was a beef hockey puck that had clearly been pre cooked and then over heated in a microwave or taoster, even the bacon on top was literally charcoal. He ate it and didn’t complain because he was starving (and because he’s English and that’s how all English food used to be). But he was also happy to share my delish trout. The next morning we were later leaving than planned because I didn’t sleep at night due to wind, tent flaps and airplanes but then slept soundly from 6 am - 930. We were out by 10 and my husband had gone to order chilaquiles for us both for breakfast at 950. We were at the dining area at 10:05 am, our chilaquiles were placed on a table outside and we went to get milk for our coffees. Upon discovering almond milk was available ( the menu only lists whole milk and oat milk), I asked to have an almond milk latte, to which the woman staffing the kitchen said, “ the espresso machine is closed” which really means she, as the coffee preparer, couldn’t be bothered to make it at 10:05 because the kitchen closed at 10. NBD, we said okay and had our coffees with almond milk. Our breakfast was another story. We sat down to a some nicely scrambled warm eggs on top of refrigerator cold tortillas in a sauce with a half of an avocado beautifully sliced but obviously previously frozen. We had a few bites of the scrambled egg and then tossed the rest of the breakfast in the bin. Super disappointing and the dining portion of the stay totally lets this wonderful experience down. I’m not sure if we’d stay again as the kitchen staff woman clearly couldn’t care less what poor quality food she served both for dinner and breakfast, and lack of effort to make a latte five minutes after the closing time for breakfast.

Under Canvas adventure

We spent two nights this September at Under Canvas at the Grand staircase and I cannot say enough good things about the experience. The greeting, the staff, the cleanliness, the food were all amazing. We spent one of our nights outside in the common area listening to live music looking at the stars. This place was an awesome experience top to bottom. I look forward to another stay with this company.

Amazing views and programming

We had a great time at Under Canvas! The views are amazing and it was the perfect place to start and end our adventurous days in the Colorado Plateau. The musician who played on our first night was so incredibly good, and Gary Ladd who gave a talk about geology the following night was absolutely perfect. Highly recommend!

Front desk is fast and efficient, Dan checked us in and helped us getting our bags unloaded and to the tent, Emily picked us up in the golf cart and checked us out. Whitten spent time with us planning our hikes and tours for our stay, she made excellent recommendations on where to go and when to go...and even checked in on us when the wind picked up and made boating on Lake Powell a little sketchy. Lara and Owen were wonderful taking our orders and serving our meals...and whoever the cooks were...the food was fantastic. The tents were perfect, the water-misters were a nice touch especially in the August summer heat and the star-gazing "window" was very cool. Need to advertise that you have coolers available to check out from the front desk...nice to be able to enjoy a cool drink on the porch after exploring all day. First night, cornhole bags were not good but glad to see they were replaced our second night. Elephant canyon was definitely worth the hike, thanks Whitten, you all should be proud of your onsite attraction! No in room safe but never felt like our valuables were threatened...besides, we could have left then in the car if we had to. Bottom line, well worth every penny.! Thank you.
