So much wrong.
It really sucks to check into a hotel with kids to find out the pool and gym closed. I even checked the hotel web page before booking, and whether Covid regulations closed pools. It’s infuriating to have signs on pool and fitness room doors and employees that claim the denial of these benefits/closures were “due to CDC regulations.” That would be a lie. Local health Heath department, state and CDC guidelines all allow for pool and gym facilities to be open. The only document I’ve found that mentions that facilities in the Hilton chain may be closed is in the Hilton Covid policy. Surrounding hotels have their pools and fitness centers open. If you are going to shut things down, don’t blame the government. That is deceptive and pure sleazy dishonest business. Shame on Hilton!
Overall a great experience!
I stayed at this hotel for two nights. I was assigned room 520. My rate including all taxes was $108.16 per night. Service - Service was fine. The female who assisted me during check-in was pre-occupied with her phone. She was simply very transactional. No mention of Diamond status. No offer of bottled water. I also did not like the fact that she was not wearing a mask covering her nose and mouth (it was dangling from her ear). When I went downstairs later in the evening asking for bottled water, she said I could purchase it and pointed to the water in the lobby. I asked even for Diamond members and she said no it is free for you. That should have been part of the check-in process, but again she was pre-occupied with her phone. The next morning there were two different females at the front desk. I chatted with them while I was waiting for my Uber and they were very friendly and helpful. Room - Room was perfect. It was large and sparking clean. Super comfortable bed. Great shower with glass sliding doors. Right amount of bathroom counter space for your toiletries, but no bar soap dish (weird). Great working AC. Microwave. Mini-refrigerator that worked well. Great wi-fi. Conveniently placed electrical outlets. Super comfortable desk chair. Hotel Information - Hotel has 147 rooms and six floors. Nice, well lit, inviting, and large lobby, with plenty of comfortable gathering spaces. Location - It is connected to the Jack Reardon Convention Center (which I heard is being demolished, but the signs are still up). Convenient free parking directly in front of the hotel. There is not really anything worthwhile within walking distance of the hotel. There is a grocery store directly across the street (The Merc Co+op), but that is about it. However, it is very close to Kansas City, Missouri. I went to City Market for dinner and it was only about three miles or a seven minute Uber ride away. It is 18 miles or 22 minutes from Kansas City International Airport (MCI). I recommend this property and I would consider staying here again if my travels ever bring me back to the area!
Good for Covid Travel
We traveled cross country this month and were looking for places where we could flush the room with outside air (with a window that opens or a door to the outside) and which either didn't have central a/c or where we could turn it off. Hilton Garden Inn is the only chain we've found where you can usually open the windows (not at every hotel for some reason -- you have to call ahead). There were snafus -- it's true that the women at the front desk had her mask only half on, but the lobby was large and people were spacing themselves (there were unmasked groups in the indoor dining area but we walked past quickly and with the overall air circulation in the lobby we felt fine about it). The first room we went to was not cleaned, but we were quickly and pleasantly switched to another room which was. We do our own brief sanitizing of knobs, fixtures, bedside tables etc. but in general we felt very comfortable there -- for a chain hotel the furnishings etc. are perfectly nice and in general it felt clean and up to date and well attended to. The bed was good, parking was easy, we would cheerfully return. For dinner we took a ten minute walk through the fairly deserted downtown area to Las Palmas, a very modest but very cheap and tasty Mexican/Central American eatery. The family running it was all masked and our takeaway order was prepared quickly while we waited outside. On our way to the highway we stopped at Splitlog -- great, local, well crafted coffee available from a drive-in window.
Mouse in room and no offer for refund.
Overall the hotel seemed nice and clean- until I was woke up at 2:30 a.m. to a mouse squeaking loudly in my room. When I called the front desk, the first response was "we can call an exterminator tomorrow." When I said I would like to be moved to a new room at that time, I was told it would have to wait until the computer reset was done- which is fine, but could have delivered the statement with a bit of tact rather than acting like I was disrupting his evening. I was staying at this hotel while working as a travel nurse in KC, so I was unable to speak to a manager during the day. That evening when I returned to the hotel, I discussed the situation and my desire to have a single night compensation with the desk attendant - he quickly told me he couldn't do anything about it and I would have to talk to the manager the next day. Again, I was working at 6 am and was unable to speak to anyone. After talking to Hilton customer service and requesting a refund, I was told to expect contact from management to discuss the situation- I have yet to hear from anyone, and have now been told by Hilton that I cannot receive a refund since I booked the room through a third party site. To say I am disappointed is an understatement- being woken up by a rodent in the middle of the night is surely grounds to have a room charge refunded, right?
Only Average (Covid safety review)
On the plus side: Hilton offers an online check-in with an app based key, so no need to go to the counter. Also the room seemed very clean, and our window opened, allowing us to ventilate the room. Finally, there were several hand sanitizer stations. The negatives: although Kansas has a mask mandate, and Hilton says they require masks, there were no signs saying you should wear a mask. The desk person had her mask under her chin, and about half the guests I saw were not wearing masks. The "sanitation seal" on our room was broken when we arrived, and although we cleaned the room ourselves anyway, having a broken seal does not create a sense of security. Finally, there was no outdoor picnic area to eat our takeout. Overall, this was an average hotel from a Covid safety standpoint.
