Faded glory, unfriendly staff, security concern
My review is based on a bedroom with also a sitting area next to the window. Such room is actually large. There is not a desk but an area where one can write and/or work near a couple of electrical outlets. However it is poorly lit. In the "sitting area" there are no outlets. The bathroom is OK with obviously old fixtures, but there is plenty of hot water. The toilet is separated from the bathing area which is actually good for privacy and efficiency. The beds are OK. That one needs two remote commands to turn the tv on and change channels is a bit hilarious and exasperating. The bed is OK. I slept well. The decor is definitely 1950 or so... some aspects of it reminded me a funeral home... Breakfast is basically OK. There are some cooked Mexican dishes, generally the same every morning; some cut fruits; some yogurt; some sweets; a couple of types of juice. There is also an omelette, fried eggs etc. station but it is generally not staffed. One has to wait for a cook to show up or ask for one to come.... The worst aspect of breakfast are the waiters and their supervisor. They do not care at all for the guests... They prefer to congregate by the cashier station and chat, gossip etc. They definitely do not go make any effort to ask if one wants coffee or to offer any services. One morning I entered the restaurant and there were a couple of waiters and the supervisor right there. I did greet them "good morning"... Not a single one bothered to reciprocate and they all walked away to their preferred station, the cashier place. No one approached me to ask if I wanted coffee or tea or an omelette etc. As every other morning, I had to ask for coffee by waiting to catch the eye of a waiter and lift my coffee cup in the air.... The coffee is not that good. Very poor service in the restaurant and a bad attitude. Security is also a concern in this hotel. First the keys to the room are the old fashioned ones easily copied by any would be thief for future returns and thefts... The doors are flimsy. It feels as if a a good push can open any of those doors. One cannot lock the door upon entering or leaving the room. There is no double lock or something sturdy to make one feel safe inside. Moreover, one of my colleagues reported that when he returned to the hotel in the evening, the door to his room was wide open. The official explanation was that the maid had forgotten to close it.... Even more worrisome is that anyone can enter the hotel and gain access to the floors without even being seen. The way the entrance of the hotel is designed, the check in desk people cannot see across who is coming and going, unless they walk in front of them. The check in/out desk is almost hidden away with basically no way to see who comes in or leaves the hotel if the person selects a certain itinerary upon entering on the premises. There is really no doorman and the one who seems to act like one first is not there on a reliable manner to deter anyone to come in who does not belong and also is not interested. One evening upon returning from dinner around 23h00 I was inside the hotel awaiting some colleagues to arrive on another taxi. The "doorman" was puttering around... One man entered the hotel, came inside, and started badgering me for money.... It could have turned into a robbery or an assault or an ugly scene. I firmly refused and he finally left. It was a bit scary... an addict who needs his fix will stop at nothing to get the money to obtain the drugs... The interesting part is that a bit later the "doorman" asked me,"What did that guy want? .... Money?" So he had seen the man come in; realized he did not belong; and did absolutely nothing to stop him or at least to challenge him... I could have been attacked and robbed right inside the hotel a few steps from the check in desk. If that man had come in on the opposite side of where I was he could have entered the hotel and roamed it at leisure, possibly attacking guests in the corridors or even their rooms with the front desk staff unaware of it. This hotel is definitely not safe and it is incredible that the management doest not correct this glaring danger, that there is a way to get into the hotel without being seen by the check in staff. Incidentally the staff at check in is totally disinterested in the guests. I always greeted them going out or coming in and often they did not even reply or show any interest. Wifi really works reliably only in the vicinity of the front desk. A hotel that leaves much to be desired.
Ignore the outdated style, and it's one of the nicest in León
This is one of those hotels you either love or loathe. I love it, but more for a vacation than a working trip. In its heyday, it must have been the most luxurious place in León. A friend of mine said it reminded her of the hotel in "The Shining", and I have to agree. It shows in things like the gift shoppe which still has kodachrome rolls and alkaline batteries for sale. The star of the show are the rooms. They are HUGE and the furnishings impressive. The first ten feet of the room are dedicated to a walk-in closet and bathroom. The toilet has its own internal door separating it from the rest of the bathroom, and the shower has a big batthtub. The basin has decorated glass shelves on both sides, for everything you might be carrying. Then come the next 20 feet of bedroom with a mirror, vanity dresser and wardrobe for each of the two matrimonial beds, all handmade, elaborately finished wood. The last ten feet are dedicated to the "living room", with two sofa chairs, a small dining/working table with four chairs and desk, complete with a corded phone of the rotating dial type. So, yes, they are 40 feet long and about 15 feet wide. The one thing I didn't like about the room is that there is no openable part to the window, and the external sunshade works too well and blocks too much sunlight for my taste. For the price, I would say it's almost a bargain. Except that the rest of the services are not up to snuff. Parking is cramped and insufficient. The restaurants are pricey and not very good, The pools were there but I didn't use them. The gym seemed almost intentionally hidden, tiny and incomplete. The corridors are very cold and not as nice as the rest, which to some people is an important detail. Also, the internet was definitely subpar. I would have given it five stars if the internet was better.
Really nice and comfy, but urgently needs a renovation
This is my second stay in this hotel. My family and me are rally fans and Leon has a date of the World Rally Championship every March so since 2011 we have been there in the first weekend of March. The hotel has an excellent location: It is 2 blocks away from the leather zone where you can buy really nice and cheap leather products such as bags, shoes and clothing. It is also a few blocks away from the rally campus where you can go and see the cars get their services each day and and the award ceremony on Explora park (it is also very near from Explora Park, the "feria" space and the Nou Camp). The rooms are so spatious. You have a huge huge bathroom, 2 queen beds and a large sitting area that you can use as an office and small dining room, but everything is really outdated. I think they should start doing a small renovation. Changing some really little things might make a huge difference. The rugs on the hallways and inside the rooms needs to be changed: it is uncolored, stained, and torn. Another little change that will make a big difference is the curtains and marble in the bathrooms: marble is really outdated and bahtroom needs a new look: it needs to be clean, minimalistic, and with different textures and the curtains in the bath tub are also stained and awful. Last, but not least beds and bed clothing. My sheets look like a million year sheets: they were rough and really thin and pillows were awful. If they change these 3 things the hotel would look much much better. The pool area is really nice and generally the staff is really nice too. I recommend the hotel, but please make that renovation this year so that I can visit it on next WRC stage.
Dated but charming
Stayed here a few days and really enjoyed the seating area in the bedroom. Overlooking the pool area was also a bonus. The doorman was particularly helpful but the buffet breakfast was quite expensive. I recommend you go ala carte as you order just what you want. The plate of fruit is a breakfast in itself.
In the 50's I bet it stunning, but...
It has beautiful setting and most common areas have been tastefully updated. When you get to the rooms, although having good bones, are sadly not very nice. Holes in the curtains, threadbare linens, old AstroTurf on the floors. You get idea. That being said, the staff have been well traied and wear uniforms worthy of a 5 star place, but the deferred maidan e in the rooms would keep from staying here again.
