Historical Inn with great potential

I am giving 5 stars because I believe all inn keepers earn at least one star for staying open during these times.
I partially agree with Melvin that there are things that need to be done. However, it is an old inn (part of its charm) and that should also be appreciated. The outside could use some refurbishment and walking on some of the stones ,while attractive, can be a bit dangerous (especially in the back) because of how slippery they were.
We originally were booked in the Robinson room. We thought it very well done, but the restroom was mostly likely designed by a man (no space for items). Especially since the sink was in the bedroom.
I agree with Melvin about your online pictures. If I could hire your photographer to do personal pictures for me, I'd look like Bradley Cooper, not the tired old man I am. I don't blame anyone for that though, smart marketing.
The problem with the room is that it was very musty and had no screens on the windows to air things out. I realize that this this kind of problem can be present in any old room, but as much as the room was otherwise great, we requested a room change and the gracious staff was very helpful in moving us to the Lightfoot room. Much better, but a screen would also have been welcomed.
Overall, this is a great old inn with a great history and wonderful staff. My hope is that as they are able to get back to "normal" they can make the tweaks needed to rise them to the level I am sure they want.

We booked our weekend getaway for our 10 year anniversary with the Inn at Meander. They had availability for us a week out, so we booked the Washington Cottage and purchased the wine weekend getaway package.
The photos and website are very well done. The grounds area is very nice, but the conditions of the inn do not match the photos.
My two star review falls into "it could've been better". Mostly for the price we paid for the room, ~$300 per night, I would have expected top notch amenities and service. The inn and our room in particular are run down and in need of some maintenance. There was clearly a towel rack repair in progress in the bathroom. The blinds were cheap and in poor condition including a few slats missing pieces. The light switch hardware was top of the line in the 90's and is now old and missing pieces. The chairs on our private patio were missing back cushions making them uncomfortable. We did see other identical chairs with pads on the back so this was an opportunity for the Inn to have their grounds in order. I am confident had we brought it to the attention of the staff, they would have fixed it, but that's not the point.
We arrived for breakfast at rush hour when several other groups had just sat down. We were served a yummy yogurt and fruit dish and coffee, then waited our turn in line. After 40 minutes we received our omelets and toast which was nothing fancy.
We inquired about the picnic basket and expressed our desire to head out about 10:30 for a hike then hit some wineries. The picnic basket isn't provided until noon, so the ingredients can be made fresh. I think that is a great idea, but the staff missed an opportunity to point that out in the website, check in or welcome email. We could have set expectations.
Mostly I feel for the price point, our expectations were higher. It's the little things that make a weekend getaway like this great and the Inn at Meander is missing those. If you are looking for luxury, perhaps this place isn't for you.
Very accommodating staff; loved Lafayette Cottage

If you are looking for a quiet night's sleep with stars in the country instead of streetlights, the Lafayette Cottage provides this and more! It is one of the newest cottages with comfy king bed, comfy sofa, new clawfoot tub, shower, windows that open, two french doors front and back, and two patios (one front, one back deck) with patio furniture/tables and great views.
A Beautiful Touch of History

We loved the Meander. We stayed in the Madison cottage Monday night through Thursday morning. The room was updated and clean. The staff was outstanding. Rob, Christy and Mattea were very attentive and went out of their way to make sure our stay was enjoyable. Rob gave us a fantastic tour of the house and grounds. Our favorite experience was watching the sunset from the back yard with a bottle of wine - beautiful. The Inn is perfectly located if you love to hike (Old Rag Mountain and White Oak Canyon are within 30 minutes). There are also several wineries near by (we loved DuCard). The Tavern was closed during our stay, but the staff offers a "pick up" dinner that was very tasty. Also, there are several restaurants in Orange and Culpepper worth the drive. Bottom Line: Great staff, Great location, and Great experience.
Paradise not Found

To say we were dissatisfied with our stay at the Meander would be a gross understatement. We prepaid for three days but stayed only one night. The on-line pictures do not portray today's reality. The place is obviously under-funded and under-staffed. I can only describe the place as run-down and seedy. Our room's furniture was dirty, decrepit, and worn out. PLEASE do not stay here!
