Still as good as ever

We have been visiting Plumber Manor since the 1980s and have never been disappointed. The old world courtesy still prevails with the addition of enthusiastic young staff making one feel very well looked after. The food is excellent as is the welcome one gets, making it the perfect place for a break.
Safe with very high standards, but lacking a wow factor

Beautiful setting with immaculate grounds. Welcoming and friendly. Characterful public areas in tune with beautiful old building. Excellent wine list.
But although our bedroom was well-equipped, comfortable, and well-maintained, it lacked style and was disappointingly bland. Much the same could be said for the food, which played safe and harked back to earlier decades. However, judging by many comments in the guest book, a touch of innovation and modernity led by a younger generation might be the last thing many of the guests would want!
Comfortable country retreat

We spent the last three nights of a week's stay in Dorset in this splendid manor house hotel tucked away in the countryside just outside the pretty village of Sturminster Newton. It's family owned (by the same family for over 400 years) so that service is personal yet unobtrusive. Host Richard is country gent charm personified, exudes bonhomie and works endlessly to make everyone feel totally at home. He has a team of well trained staff to whom nothing seems too much trouble.
Our room in the main house was traditional and comfortable with a spacious bathroom huge bath and first rate walk-in shower.
Food is well cooked and again largely traditional. We had some terrific beef and venison for example in delicious sauces.
We loved the extensive gardens, lawns, streams and wild corners begging to be explored and producing an abundance of butterflies during our stay.
All in all this is gracious country living in a beautiful part of England. It was our first visit but won't be our last.
A notably excellent country house hotel in rural Dorset

We stayed at Plumber Manor for a night, visiting Cranborne on the way, to see the Tradescant garden, and Sherborne Castle on the next day, to learn about Walter Raleigh and see an early garden by Capability Brown. The hotel was charming, family-run to a very high standard, like a private country house, and with a really excellent team of young and well-trained waiters and waitresses for dinner and breakfast. Dinner was really good, and so was breakfast, catering for one vegetarian and one gluten-free. Can recommend very highly.
