Location Allow Property to Take Advantage
The location is amazing. Nestled right in the dunes is quiet and peaceful place to stay on the hotel side of things. Not so fond of room set up & amenities. Beds are not comfortable. The room needs a deep cleaning as windowsills were grimy and the locks did not work on slider. Safe was seriously old school. dirty. The carpet was worn too. Bedding Was lacking there’s no comforter on the bed and when I ask for a blanket I got was look like a dirty dog blanket. Although I paid for Ocean front my room my view was of the Sand dunes and I could see the ocean out of a corner of the room. The dunes create a private space. Single story units do not have noisy upstairs people, so you might want to ask about those rooms. Also, access to beach requires moderate hike downhill in soft sand. While I appreciated the work out coming back, some may find it challenging. Service was spotty, no one answered phone & requests for blanket initially ignored, but the door people and the guy is driving the carts were great.
LOVED IT 😍
Check in was smooth, parking requires a little walking but not bad. Room had a beach view that can be seen from the porch and the bed. Don’t leave the fireplace on, when we came back it was like a sauna, resolved easily by opening doors and letting the breeze in. Door entrance is shared with neighbor guest but the wall where bed is located is not against the another guest. Great customer service
Sanctuary Resort is a Snake Pit not careful during COVID
We stayed July 2020 and did not realize the property shared with a large vacation rental property. What we thought would be a relaxing visit ended up being a stay of frustration with a family above and beside us. There was no privacy at all. The walls are paper thin and it sounded like a bowling alley all day and NIGHT long. I overheard more than a few employees complaining about work and admin- just proves that problems internal as well. The beautiful video Sanctuary has on its website for promotion is DECEPTIVE. There is no housekeeping unless you request it everyday. Who heard of that when your paying 700 a night? Avoid this place.
Manage your expectations, I wish I had
My family (2 adults, 2 kids ages 8 & 2) went the second week of June when things started reopening during the pandemic for my husband’s birthday. We have friends that have been many times and rave about this place, so I’ve been wanting to come for years. I think my expectations were too high and I was very let down. It started at check-in, the gentleman at the front desk was not wearing a mask (nor was one of the men cleaning the room next to us one day), which struck us as odd given the pandemic we’re living in. Our room was ready at 3:45pm, and when we went back to get the keys my husband was also handed an envelope and overheard it was going to be a 10 min wait to get help with our luggage. We opted to walk our luggage in ourselves. The rooms are accessible on foot or staff driven golf cart. You can’t park next to your room, so if you have a lot of stuff it can take you a few trips to get everything to your room. We brought a wagon, which helped. The envelope that was given to us without an explanation contained two letters written by Jeroen Gerese, the Resort General Manager that contained all of the information I thought we should have been told at check-in AND find on the website (I’ve looked numerous times and finally found a FAQ page that says the restaurant and spa are closed and WE need to wear masks, but not much else). These letters tell you that among other things, the pool, restaurant, and playground were all closed. It would have been nice to have this information online prior to arrival or even booking so we could have used that information to make our decisions or just simply prepared our daughter for the pool closure. The playground had caution tape wrapped around it, but by day three it had been ripped off and was just hanging there and I saw multiple people using it. I’m not sure if that was intentional and the staff just left the tape hanging there or they just didn’t bother to put the tape back up after someone ripped it down. Either explanation makes no sense though. The letters also stated the extra measures they are taking to ensure safety during the pandemic, which included sanitizing stations and wipes for guests and staff, we never saw any of that. NONE of the points listed on those letters included “enhanced cleaning” of guest rooms, which ended up not being surprising after seeing the room. We brought wipes and Lysol to clean the room, but I was shocked at how dirty it turned out to be. I understand it is a beach hotel, so sand is to be expected, but during this pandemic I thought most places were putting their best foot forward and over doing it with the cleaning, but not The Sanctuary. There were spots that looked as if they hadn’t been cleaned in months including the walls, there was visible dirt on the walls, why would that not be cleaned? Then on top of that our sheets, dust ruffle, and some towels had stains on them. For a self-proclaimed “luxury” resort that charges the rates that they do even during the COVID-19 pandemic, I’d expect to get sheets and towels without stains. We called to get new sheets our first night when we saw the stains and when we got them they were the wrong size, it was already past our kids bedtime so we just made do. In addition to the dirty room, the showers had terrible water pressure, there was sand in the tub when we arrived, the stopper in the tub was broken, the microwave hadn’t been cleaned, and there were only blinds covering the windows that did little to keep out any light in the morning (even after we put blankets up to cover them) providing us with a consistent 6am wake up! I state all of this just to paint the picture of how little care has been put into maintaining this room. There was no luxury in suite 613. The letters we were given also stated they had suspended housekeeping for anyone staying multiple nights, so if you need anything just call down to the front desk. By day three we were running low on multiple items. We tried calling numerous times from the in-room phone only to keep getting connected to a Sprint voicemail. We got through to the front desk from our cell and about 30 min later were brought our items, except for more soap, we were told not by the front desk, but by the staff member delivering the items that they had run out. I find it inexcusable for a hotel, especially during a pandemic where the number one thing you’re told is to wash your hands, to run out of hand soap. Interestingly, the next day we spoke to someone cleaning the room next to us if they had any soap and they happily gave us some. Overall the staff were not very friendly, welcoming, or helpful. On the map we were given at check-in they circled the bonfires and wrote 6:30-11pm for them to be lit. But on the backside of the map it said the bonfires were lit from 8-10pm. When we called down to ask what time they were lit, we were told “around sunset, at 7:30pm”. Well sunset was supposed to be at 8:30pm and our kids go to bed at 8, so we decided to skip it and make them in the room only to smell the fires going a few minutes after we called at 6:45pm. I don’t understand how three different items of information could all be wrong and how the front desk wouldn’t know that someone was literally going to go light them when we called. Also, we knew there was a resort fee from booking our vacation through Expedia, but no one at the resort ever told us about it, nor told us they would charge it, my husband had to ask about it when we checked out. Just a few more examples of the laissez-faire nature of the staff. Lastly, we were surprised that they appeared to be running at nearly full capacity, even though it says on their website they are not. There were quite a few people out and about on their balconies or out walking their dogs, which was not an issue except when the resort ran out of waste bags and people just left the dog poop sitting in the middle of the path to the beach or in the grass for children to fall into! We saw people in almost every room and even had 3 different sets of people staying in the room right next to us throughout every night of our stay. The last of which decided to smoke pot on his balcony, which prompted us to shut our door because the kids were complaining about the smell. After all of that I have to say the one thing this place has going for it is the location. It is a short walk to the beach, which we loved. The room, an oceanfront junior suite, is a good size for a family of four and it was very nice to have to ocean right outside your door (you can’t walk to it from your room though-just FYI). The small fridge and microwave (once cleaned) came in handy. Unfortunately, for our family, the location doesn’t mean everything to us and all of the continuous missteps really overshadowed the few positives. I understand many of these issues are small ones, but to experience all of them throughout our stay at what we thought was a luxury resort really added up to a disappointing vacation. I would love to say I’d try it again after we’re through this pandemic, but honestly these rooms aren’t cheap, even during the pandemic, and I think I’d rather use my money at a hotel I can trust.
