A super Riad, wonderful staff, excellent food, fascinating city and a brilliant holiday.

In the centre of the Medina, down a side street off the main Souk and behind a heavy Ali Baba door lies the Riad Alma Mouassine. Once inside, you enter the magical palace perhaps once belonging to some long dead rich merchant. Greeted first with a traditional mint tea we were then shown to our room at the top of the hotel, with its own terrace area. The hotel is only a few minutes walk away from the main square – Jamaa el Fna which in the evening turns into sea of juice stalls. eating stalls, snake charmers, drummers, jugglers and everything Moroccan. Here you can join locals and tourists and eat at the stalls on wooden benches extremely cheaply (£6-£10), choosing from a range of excellent meat or chicken Tagines, fried fish. Vegetable cous-cous and much more. The Souks feel very safe now, the Tourist Police have done wonders over the years to stop extreme pestering and crime. (Although you still have to be sensible as you would anywhere you go on holiday.) Our first night at the Riad we were served salads, pastries and a delicious Tagine. Also, having laid the table beautifully downstairs they happily moved everything up to our terrace so we could eat in the coolness of the evening under the stars. The Riad has a main roof terrace above ours, with views across the roofs of Marrakech. Despite the wonderful décor of the place the real stars of the holiday were the staff. Particularly Yohan (Call me John) and Fadel. They were brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble and they kept us supplied with beer, wine, teas and coffees as well as brining our breakfasts all the way up to our terrace every morning. I think it is fair to say that these two in particular elevated our stay from enjoyable to unforgettable. I should also mention that our bedroom and bathroom, as well as the whole Riad was extremely clean and our room was serviced every day. Marrakech is not for the feint-hearted – lots of walking, lots of lights and people and stalls and bustle but very very interesting. We did eat out at some posh restaurants which i will mention: Al Fassia – as seen on BBC’s Remarkable Places to Eat with Fred Sirieix (Taxi required), the Riad Palais Lamrani (The garden setting is fantastic) and the Narwama (With entertainment starting around 21:30). All of these served wine – but alcohol is comparatively expensive in Morocco. Expect to pay around £50 a head with wine at £25-£35 a bottle. You can of course eat a lot cheaper in the local restaurants. Took day trips out to Essaouira (Seaside town) and the Atlas mountains – Brilliant value at £13 & £15 each. (Booking.com)

Not recommended based on my personal last stay

Short version: Stay away from this place!!! Even worse, being a Moroccan, I was surprised everything is not right from start: Rooms: - Very deceiving considering what you pay for, compared to next door Riad, we used to use Dar Justo. - We were invoiced a morning coffee when we paid the full price breakfast. - worse part: before coming, we asked for a massage, we were communicated a price of 350 MAD per person, we were presented by a spa 1meter by 2meters, they did the massage in our room, no professional equipment, only to be presented by a bill of 350 for spa and 1000MAD for massage each. They charged us at the end 1000 mad each instead of the initial 350 each. - when we asked for an invoice they asked us what we need it for.... - they asked us to pay in cash even though we saw an ATM machine. We suspect some bill manipulation especially with what happened to us there. - they never missed any chance to charge us extras... - One last important point, the guys working here keep getting personal with visitors, chit-chating them, getting too close and evasive. This is exactly the kind of business that give bad reputation to our country, especially with us being locals. We filed a case with our government to check TAX evasion and bad/manipulative services. Definitely will not recommend, especially foreign tourists so they don't get any bad ideas about our country.

Fantastic stay at a beautiful riad

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left Celimene the owner, Samad the manager and Abdul were all very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The riad is beautiful, right in the heart of the Medina and only 5 mins walk to the central square Djama el fna. Everything we wanted to see was within walking distance from the riad. This traditional riad has been lovingly restored and is an oasis from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. Calm quite and welcoming inside with a great terrace with a wonderful view on which to take breakfast and watch the sunset over the city. If you want a warm welcome in a great location in a lovely riad then I highly recommend Riad Alma Mouassine.

A most wonderful Riad at reasonable prices

This tranquil and peaceful Riad in the middle of the Souk of Marrakesh offers rooms for every taste: from authentic Morrocan/Berber furnishing to a more modern interpretation of the local culture. In any case the guest, if individual traveller, family or group of friends is welcomed in this beautiful oasis in the heart of Marrakesch. Every wish is heard and fulfilled. The owner of the Riad takes good care that her rooms are clean and that the guests feel at home. I highly recommend this wonderful place!
