Front desk no personality and dirty rooms.
Upon arriving and leaving the front desk personal had no personality. We had a ocean view room for 2 nights that had a partial view of the ocean. Unfortunately the sliding glass door was filthy which ruined the view. The bathroom mirror was not clean and there was hair on the walls behind the door. After arriving back to our room the next afternoon the beds were not made up but the coffee and cups were replaced.
Past Its Prime
I stayed at Hill House for a pre-Christmas getaway. My room was billed as a "Deluxe Ocean View" room, was supposedly one of their best rooms, and commanded a higher price than their average room. It had a distant but nice ocean view, however one had to climb two sets of stairs to reach it. The room was quite dirty, the beds were lumpy, and the decor was very dark. The hotel provides only two very small bars of soap in the way of toiletries. The towels were very thin and stained. The faucets of both of the two sinks and the shower were barely operational. The thermostat did not work, and the room was 85 degrees! When I asked for help with the heating system, the staff wee not helpful. Stay somewhere else!
Scared, not scared
I kept teasing my husband that we were going to stay in theMurder house. I had watched the Netflix series. I knew this place had nothing to do with the series...but you never know. I post a few photos on FB and my aunt comments about Murder She Wrote. Yes- This is the New England town on the West Coast! Our room- floral threw up in it- it was awesome! The carpet must have been 30 years old! It did not smell musty and there were no blood stains! We were safe! We toured the garden a bit- would love to come back in the spring. It was pretty in October, it must be fabulous in April/May! Had a comfortable night...no ghosts/ bent neck ladies. Breakfast was not spectacular, but some coffee, cereal and pastries were sufficient. Staff was very friendly.
The location of the Hill House was excellent and very close to town and places for dinner. Check-in was easy & quick and the clerk was friendly and accommodating. She even was able to change our room from a 2nd floor room to a 1st floor room (no elevator for the luggage). There was a cute little patio area outside the sliding glass door with two small Adirondack chairs and surrounded by flowers. It was too chilly for us to sit outside while we had a glass of wine. The two comfortable rockers in the room were certainly perfect for enjoying our wine. Facilities were clean and everything worked as it should. I was happy we stayed in Mendocino instead of a little further north in Fort Bragg. · Although everything was clean and well-appointed, the bathroom area would benefit from a minor update. The breakfast area was open and beautiful with lots of light. I would have enjoyed a larger selection for breakfast. It was as noted in the website, a continental breakfast with cereal, yogurt and sweet rolls. The positives well out-weighed the negatives.
Stay Away From Hill House Inn
I can’t wait to leave Hill House Inn. Room 110: No window in room...only a sliding door opening outside to ground level...so impossible to get fresh air and security at same time. Old (as in 80’s) with poor maintenance and renovation. Ex: bathtub drain didn’t work. The women’s room off the lobby smells like a septic system. When I told the unfriendly woman at front desk she said they were “working on it”. When the cleaning lady aired out the restroom into the breakfast room I just about fell over with the stench. Bath gel dispenser broken or empty. Dark room. Old, chipped, mismatched furniture and lamps. Didn’t want to touch anything. They need a competent manager with money to restore. Stay away from Hill House Inn.
