Decent three star, but advance confirmations not honored

I hate it, but they deserved one star review. First, this is a very decent three star hotel and the desk staff is excellent. They are not responsible for the decisions of management. The hotel requires payment in advance and it was confirmed by booking.com that I would have a room near my daughter. that was important to me. Mexico City is one of the worst cities for earthquakes because it is on an old lake bed and setting the hotel is probably in the worst area, Condesa, for earthquakes. I worry that it’s a game of Russian roulette though the odds are in your favor. I wanted it to be close to my daughter (the two bedroom suites were taken) and it was confirmed that I would be close to her. Instead probably we were as far apart in the hotel as possible. I was given a ground floor room with limited to no privacy. We checked in around 3 o’clock, so I can only presume that some other hotel guest who arrived earlier complained and was given the room that was originally intended for us. I suppose I could’ve tried to get my money back to go to another hotel, but the city was booked for the art fair. Other guests on TA who attempted to get money returned, got nowhere. Also I slept in my clothes because the room did not have heat. On the second night I was given a miniature heater. If you are fortunate to get a room with heat and a room that is where you would like it in the hotel, you will have a good stay for a good three star hotel. If you believe and consider important what they’re telling you in advance on your confirmation, then you are making mistake if you rely on it. Being close to my daughter, having recently lost my son, was really the most important thing for me. This is a reasonably good place if you are on a budget. The part of town is popular and the rate was $650 for two rooms for two nights. If I were traveling on my own, I would probably consider coming back because I really like the desk staff, the hotel was pretty clean and I would make a bigger point of nailing down the expectations in advance. Since I got an email asking to leave a review I did, but might not have otherwise. I know that the rooms are described as beautiful by one reviewer, but that wasn’t the case with mine because it looked on people two feet away outside the window walking to their (possibly beautiful) rooms and the bottom of a light shaft. The rooms are extremely Spartan, but more than adequate.

Casa Decu was 100% perfect. The hotel was beautiful and immaculate and the staff was so professional! We felt safe at all times and absolutely adored having breakfast on the roof. We have already told friends about our fantastic stay here and can not wait to return!

A very disappointing 5 day stay.

We reserved a superior suite and stayed for 5 nites. The reviews were good and the location excellent. But we were horribly disappointed. First, the good things: the bed is great, the terrace is lovely, the shower rainhead is terrific. The hotel is clean and well-maintained. BUT, the lighting in the room and in the hotel hallways is extremely dim -- so much so that the stairwells (spiral) are difficult at night. The general atmosphere of the place is dour...there is no positive energy from the either the man who opens the front door or the staff at the reception desk. The windows look out on air shafts. But mostly, the suite is poorly designed and therefore the sitting area is very uncomfortable. The TV is in the sitting area and perpendicular to it is a bench with a foam cushion. Two people can't comfortably lounge and read or watch TV. We asked twice if they could get us one or two armchairs and each time we were told (flatly) NO. There was no attempt to try to problem solve the situation. Between the airshafts and dim lighting (really dim, even over the sink) and a very uncomfortable sitting area, we were not sorry when the 5 days were over.
