Quaint, cosy, great food, quiet, friendly service

Special place! The building is circa 900 years, large (10 bedrooms) yet quaint and quiet. Rooms are cosy. The staff are great and the food/service is faultless. For the money you'll struggle to find better - the complimentary breakfast was surprisingly good. TV in room could be upgraded but we didn't visit to watch tv. It looks even better in real life than it does in the pictures which you can't say of most places. I'd give this place somewhere in the 90's out of 100 and I'm quite fussy. We will definitely be back!

Wonderful stay good food lovely hosts will be back again soon nice log fire in bar cozy lounge with comfy settees .all set in a very pretty village. Highly recomended Breakfast excellent 👌 room was huge and very clean and warm.

We stayed at the Royal Oak for 2 nights in February. The accomodation was very good, clean, comfortable, quiet with a good size room. Breakfast was first class; although we had to be away early on the first morning, Jane made sure that we had the full English. We ate there both nights and the menu was varied, and the food very good. The restaurant is busy so you need to book. We both had the haunch of venison which we'd recommend. Jane and Steve are great hosts. It was lovely to see a place that was buzzing with locals and tourists. They've got the formula right!

Stayed in a courtyard room for three nights with our dog. We were welcomed by the owner Jane and made to feel at home and the hotel is very dog friendly. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel everyday and all the food was of an excellent standard and there was a varied and interesting menu.

What a wonderful place to spend the evening and night. Recently taken over by a new owner who is clearly making a concerted effort to make this a wonderful destination. All of our rooms were very large, comfortable beds and happily with very new modern bathrooms in a very old inn. I wish I had their water pressure at my home! Evening meal was excellent. I had venison which was cooked nice and pink and was really tasty. Others had the lamb and equally happy. Nice bar, friendly staff and locals and was a pleasant place to finish the evening. I can't recommend this place highly enough for a visit anytime of the year, but as a place to overnight for a sporting event, it is significantly better (and better value) than most of the more well known hotels.
