Friendly staff in an environmententally unfriendly resort

We spend two weeks in this resort booked all inclusive and two beach villas (124/123) on the reef side. The resort is quite worn down mainly the jetties, we had very bad experience with sand flies and could not really stay on the beach/sunbeds. Instead we soend more time in the rooms or snorkelling/diving. I would like to thank the staff in the restaurant and in the bars mainly sunset bar. Mr Ahubar was very nicely looking after us. the restaurant has a very good selection and variety of food and you would not taste that its all inclusive. On the flip side the reception staff was never competent to provide answers or handle requests spot on, they always refered to management who is competent.
The resort is burning trash among other stuff almost every day during daytime which you can smell and it was annoying. I did not see PVE panels using solar energy or even a small biogas station that would generate electricity.
Every drink comes from a small plastic bottle 0.3l (water, soft drinks, juices are from tetra pack) and there is little or none “green” initiative going on. this is a big difference compared to other hotels in Maldives. The resort is quite cheap compared to the others in their class in Maldives, but I would be prepared to pay extra more if they would separete waste, give water in glass bottles, would stop throwing food rests into the ocean (and feed the fishes) and either recycle or trnasfer to another island.
the reef is nice, but quite short however for those who like diving the Joy dive diving base has a very friendly and orofessional staff who like their job and can take you to various sites both diving and snorkelling
Go there if you can

Couple in our thirties. WaterBungalow 181 end of July 2021.
The negativs first, to end on a positive note:
The footwashing bowles are of no pratical use. Please put big bowles to put the whole foot in.
Remove the water roses ponds, nobody is looking at them, they are a waste of space, water, energy and man power. And worst of all they are a breeding ground for bloodsucking insects. So absolutely no use at all. Tourists are not interested in looking at those,
Wifiis abysmal. There is simply no working wifi. It reminds me of standarts of 1999. this could be easily fixed by putting 3 more signal masts out.
But dont get me wrong. I gave the resort a perfect evaluation. They are currently fixing the constructions. So keep doing that, and it will be in perfect condition in no time. The wooden ways dont feel unsafe. The plants and trees are well kept. Beaches are clean. Facilities are clean too. Our bungalow is swept twice a day. So no sand inside.
Second, service is friendly, always helpful, and no waiting times. Enough bars.
Third, Dive center is friendly and offers activities. Found other people willing to participate in fun beach volleyball games every evening.
Fourth, they fumigate every evening.
Finally !the best, the food is fantastic. Buffet is served by personal behind the buffet, so nothing is spilled or chaotic.
Nice island, but terrible mosquitoes

Location of the island:
a lot of problems with beach erosion, so it is very important which side of the island you are on. During our stay (when the beach on the north side of the island was already completely eroded!) the staff tried to pump sand from one end of the island to the other, but that is Sisyphus ’job. I don’t know whose idea this is, but as an engineer I can tell you that without serious fortification of the coast, it won’t work here. Dear owners and management, please arrange this as soon as possible because this beautiful islet is really a shame.
If you are still temporarily resolving the current situation by pumping sand, this should be started as soon as the problem arises. In our case, I can confirm that the management has completely missed out here, which is unacceptable! On the north side, the island looked really sad, a completely eroded beach all the way to the foundations of the bungalow (in some places even these were eroded!). Apparently the owners left the management of the island to untrained people.
At the time of our arrival we were first sent to a bungalow on the north side where the beach was completely eroded! Since we were with a small child (which they knew in advance), this is all the more unacceptable; I'm making a lot of criticism of the management here! Such resort accommodation simply should not be offered! And not just to a family with a small child, but to anyone.
The bungalows (both overwater and beach) are fine, but nothing out of the ordinary. A general renovation will be needed (rotten wooden parts, rusty load-bearing columns, rusty air conditioners ...).
for the sixth time in the Maldives in various resorts. The restaurant on this island has a unique position as it is actually located above the sea; really wonderful! It blows pleasantly all the time. If the wind is still too strong, the staff will take care of the covering.
very good (I follow European standards). Always a sufficient selection of different foods prepared at a solid level. It also occasionally offers fresh sushi (from tuna caught three hours ago).
- cooks and waiters: very, sincerely friendly! They deserve an extra tip.
- reception staff: very dependent on who you come across. Some are very friendly and really make an effort to sort things out (e.g. replacing an unsuitable bungalow) and some are unaware of why they are actually there. In my experience, there is a need to scold management here, which is clearly not the most up to the task.
- male maids: these, however, are very different. When we arrived at the water bungalow, the bathroom was supposed to be cleaned, but we noticed that there was urine in the toilet bowl and hair in the tub. Later, the cleaning was somewhere so-so. When we later moved into a beach bungalow, we initially had some trouble smelling like mold. We found that this was due to the condensate draining from the air conditioner, which was conducted so stupidly that water flowed down the wall of the bungalow and also flowed inside, soaking the wooden floor, which began to mold and rot. Well, the male maid just tried to do what he could here and clean up the matter, but the mold that is stuck in the wooden floor and wall can’t just be wiped off. However, the male maid reliably noticed this water long before our arrival and would be obliged to inform the manager, who should have instructed the hanydman to fix the matter (a very simple intervention, but you need some tools). But they obviously prefer to let the matter go on, just like with beach erosion.
a beautiful coral reef, but unfortunately the overheating of the sea years ago devastated the corals here as well. In some sections, they are slowly reviving (less than 10%) and if the sea temperature is stable, it will take at least another 20 years for the coral reef to recover. However, there is a lot of fauna on the coral reef, so snorkeling is extremely pleasant. Plenty of coral reef sharks (white tip and black tip as well), moray eels, turtles, octopuses, clownfish, surgeons, yellow butterfly fish, occasionally also barracudas and other large fish.
terrible, terrible mosquitoes! As you probably know, mosquitoes don’t bite all people equally intensely, but they did treat our family on this island very much. We were initially scared that they might not be mosquitoes and that we had stings from some other insects (which, for example, can get caught in bed), as the stings were abnormally itchy for more than a week after the sting, but we made sure that it’s actually about mosquitoes. There are two ornamental ponds on the island, which are terribly overgrown and as such an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. Apparently they do not understand here that the ponds need to be cleaned periodically. Since mosquitoes have multiplied so much, smoking would also be necessary at every twilight, every day. During our two-week stay, they smoked only twice, very superficially and not all over the island.
After dinner we wanted to have a cocktail in the bar and chat by the pool, but because of the mosquitoes it just didn't work. Really bad experience. As I mentioned, this is our sixth visit to the Maldives, and mosquitoes were on all the other islands as well, but nowhere is it as big a problem as here. We also applied strong repellents (DEET 30%) in the evening, but unfortunately it was not possible to sit outside and enjoy this beautiful island.
If you are staying for at least 1 week, you are entitled to a one-day safari boat trip anywhere you want, which is a great thing. I asked at the reception what it is like if we stay for 2 weeks (as in our case), and they replied that then we have the opportunity to spend the night on a safari boat in the bay. However, there is no possibility to go on two day trips, which was our wish. When I asked for an explanation as to why this is not feasible (since 1 week plus 1 week is 2 weeks, isn’t it?), obviously my question was too much math: "It just isn't possible, sir" was their answer.
And one more thing: ask for the date of your free day trip as soon as you arrive on the island, as you will not necessarily be reminded of it at all at the reception. However, it can also happen that if you are assigned an appointment closer to the end of your stay, the sea will be quite rough and you will not want to go on a full day of swaying, and you will run out of options to postpone the trip.
- an island we would like to return to
- the owner must appoint a manager who will cope with the tasks
- it is necessary to take care of mosquito disinsection
