Awful hotel, unimpressed by staff response
I stay in hotels ~100 nights/year, and I very rarely have negative experiences, especially in Marriotts. This was an exception however. First off, I don't think this hotel physically is up to the standards of Marriott or the courtyard brand. The rooms are outdated and the whole hotel feels dirty. The walls are paper thin, to the point that I felt uncomfortable calling the front desk to complain about the room next door for fear that they would hear me. The first room I was given had a bad, strong odor. I asked to switch rooms, and the staff was very accommodating and gave me what was apparently the last open room at the hotel. The room was fine, but when I returned from dinner it reeked of cigarette smoke. It sounded like there was a party going on next door, with loud music and people constantly going in and out of the room. I had a cold which was very negativity affected by the smoke. Like I said above, I felt uncomfortable calling the front desk because the walls were so thin I thought they'd hear, so I went down to the front desk to complain about the smoke. The front desk attendant said other people had complained about the smoke and that security was trying to solve it. However, there did not seem to be any immediate action taken, and I could continue to smell smoke coming through the adjoining the door for hours after I went down. I considered asking to just leave and switch hotels (since this was the last available room), but I was tired from traveling and just went to sleep. I am not sure if any action was ever taken against the people smoking but when I woke up in the morning my clothes smelled like smoke. This was an unacceptable experience. I will certainly not return to the courtyard Oakland, but it has caused me to question Marriott's standards in general. I am not sure why the hotel was unable to swiftly unwilling to address the situation, but I think that smoking in the hotel is a red line which requires a stronger response by both the hotel and Marriott.
Tranquil stay, Phenomenal staff
My experience with this hotel started with a phone conversation with Amika at the front desk a few days before my reservation to confirm my stay and request a quiet room. She was kind and helpful; it really put me at ease and assured me everything was going to be perfect during my stay. Indeed, everything was perfect during my stay. Check-in was quick, pleasant, and smooth. I wish I had the agent's name who assisted me (long hair tied back) because she was great, and she later helped me when I left my luggage at front desk after I checked out. The room (5th floor) was quiet, as well as clean and well-appointed. Jason at the front desk helped me out several times during my stay, and everything just seemed really seamless. The location is perfect if you need to get to the convention center or Bart. Definitely recommend and would stay here again.
This hotel is in downtown Oakland, next to Chinatown. The hotel was clean and quiet, and a quick walk (5min) from the Oaand Convention Center. The BART station is a short walk away too.I really enjoyed the food at the Bistro restaurant inside where you could easily grab your meals and go. I also enjoyed the ice water with citrus fruit offered in the lobby in the afternoon.

I simply can't stop raving about how AMAZING my stay at this hotel was. From the General Manager, Austin, to the Operations Manager Rubeeka, to Lynn at the bistro, the staff was simply above and beyond, and takes such pride in their property and their jobs! The property is centrally located next to the Convention Center. It is very well appointed, has a nice pool, and the bistro offers a nice selection of drinks and food items. The rooms are wonderful. I can't thank the staff enough for making my stay so enjoyable and special!
The hotel is located near the 12th Street/Oakland City Center BART station on the Richmond Line from Oakland Airport or the BART Antioch Line from San Francisco Airport. The hotel is in downtown Oakland and next to Chinatown. My room is spacious, with two queen-size beds. It has an iron and an ironing board, but it does not have a safe. There is a small refrigerator, two bottles of water and a Keuric coffee maker. The 24-hour fitness center is modest with three treadmills, one elliptical machine, one cycling machine, and a number of free weights.
