This place needs to be torn down. It needs so much work to bring it up to par. The elevator is ancient; tiles are coming off; paint peeling; room is moldy and smelly; linens are old and fraying; alarm clock didn't work; electrical outlets didn't work; closet was a makeshift box; mold in shower; no hot water; beds were old and uncomfortable with mattresses that appeared to be from the 1950s; did not replenish any of the shampoos; soaps; glasses; tissues; not clean at all; heat in the room was overwhelming; had to have the air conditioner on to clear the smelly moldy air. restaurant was closed; continental breakfast was appalling. this is NOT a 3 star hotel...closer to 1!!! Staff was not pleasant and were not interested in making your stay comfortable. Needs a complete overhaul.
Keep it Simple
I don't travel much but when I do I feel a bit uncomfortable in the big fancy new hotels. I don't like spending the money on fancy nor do I like the feel of new hotels. I like clean, cheap, unique, and good location. The Washington Inn offers all those things. I am into sustainability and extending the life of a building (It was built in 1913) is a very sustainable practice that I will always support. Air conditioning was good but I could also open the window as it was nice weather. This is a nice option. A bit loud with early morning garbage hauling but I am OK with that. I would stay here every time I am in Oakland. I am sure this is not the hotel for everyone but it worked for me.
Expectation not met
Our first night with The Washington Inn was more than unacceptable. We arrived at 23:30 after 20 hours journey, and I was underwhelmed as we approaching the hotel. We were given the disabled room, which was horrible - noisy, dysfunctional air conditioning, smelly, broken shower and there is no safe in the room. I was more than horrified that we were going to spend 8 nights here for our holiday. It was late and the hotel was full - we had no choice but tried to rest. We spoke to the General Manager the following data, and he has dealt with our concerns in a very effective manner. We were upgraded to the King Suite for the rest of our stay. There are a few points I would still like to address: Front Desk: Front Desk staff were friendly but require further training. I am actually quite concerned about the security of the our property. We had to have our key cards issued several times during our stay and we were told “it was just a very old system”. We weren’t checked for any personal information before a key card is re-issued. The neighborhood: needless to say Oakland and the area can be a little bit unsettling as quite a few homeless wondering around, shouting at nights, and smoking cannabis. The smell could be unpleasant. The breakfast: Breakfast was included but don’t expect too much. It’s quite basic - actually I wasn’t bothered after first day. Cannabis: it’s legal to smoke cannabis in San Francisco. We had guests smoking cannabis in their rooms on our floor and the whole floor stank like prison. The housekeeping couldn’t speak English and therefore no action could be taken. We had to report it to the General Manager - it was quickly resolved but sill quite let down by having to address it. I must say I am still unsure what rating would correctly reflect my experience with them. I think it’s cost effective as it would cost us double to stay at Marriott but would I book with them if I knew what to expect? The answer is no. Would I book with them again shall I visit San Francisco next time? The answer is also no. Was I pleased with my stay after the general manager tried to make things right? The answer is yes. I think 3 stars is a reflective and fair rating - I felt the need to give the review so others know what to expect.
Appalling would be too complimentary
I never usually write reviews but this place....No hot water, no sockets unless you take plug out from tv or something, air con doesn’t work, phone didn’t work to call front desk to inform them of issues and even then the lady behind the front desk wasn’t exactly the advertisement for the hospitality industry more like hostile industry. I’ve stayed in better hostels in developing countries not worth €30 let alone anything more. ENDEAVOUR AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Has gone down down down hiill
I have spent over 1000 nights in Oakland City Center in the last 8 years, mostly at the Clarion, some Marriott, the Washington and then when desperate hotels in Jack London Sqr (you are better sleeping on a bench than those) Had been a year since staying at Washington...and it has gone down hill. Sheets are thread-worn 100% polyester from the '70s . No hot water in the morning (sure that happens, but has happened to me here several times) The maids have taken to using excessive doses of chlorine in the bathrooms - I appreciate cleanliness of course - but such that the smell remains over night and enough to burn my throat and sinuses. No upgrades to the quality of the public spaces over the 8 years. Also a marginal breakfast. And it never fails that a large diesel truck is either unloading or idling on 10th street right below the rooms at 4am..... In contrast, the Clarion, which is the value leader in the City Center area has: Expensive linens, douvets, nicer towels, new a/c for the rooms, new carpet, tile, upgraded tvsets, and a an enhanced breakfast buffet, spaces are quiet (but be cautious, a tower is under construction, you do not want a street facing room these days.) The Marriott is always a great stay, but the rates are usually super high, sometimes above $700, rarely under $300- hard to spend even my client's money on that. WI has the turn of the century west coast charm, but it ends as you walk in the door.
