Good value

Really lovely Sunday Lunch, especially for the price. Very tasty and it came with a huge amount of varied vegetables, including cabbage, asparagus carrots, cauliflower cheese and two kinds of potato. (Makes a change from the usual peas and carrots that are usually served at other venues) Served lovely and hot. The waitress worked extremely hard and could have done with some extra help but it didn't spoil our visit. All staff friendly and helpful, Lisa even asked if we had had enough to eat. The answer was yes.

We had family staying here so met up for a meal. We absolutely loved it here, the staff are really friendly, warm and welcoming and the food was amazing. Highly recommend the home made Cheese Pie and home made Chips.

A lovely place

Although going through some renovation during my short stay. The location is delightful, the rooms clean and comfortable and the bar well stocked. I didn’t eat there but the food looked excellent and the menu varied. The staff were lovely and I would return to here on my next visit without any concerns!

Great hotel and food

A great hotel I had a three course dinner and breakfast, delicious and good value. Mushroom soup, squash curry and berry crumble for dinner- couldn’t be much better! Vegetarian breakfast and coffee, served promptly, well presented and piping hot. Staff were welcoming and helpful, not too relaxed, not too formal. Rooms are nice and the shower was fantastic. The only negative was that Room 7 has light from outside, through thin curtains. It never got really dark, which wasn’t ideal. Bed was comfy though.

Utterly abysmal food and customer service

Avoid this place at all costs. Visited the restaurant here in February 2023 for a birthday meal with my family (a party of 5 people), a group of 12 of us in total. The food here was utterly abysmal. As a starter, I ordered the fried brie. It was bland and disappointing, but passable at least. Sadly, the same cannot be said for my main course. As a vegetarian I ordered the only option available to me, the butternut squash risotto. I am not over exaggerating when I say it was the worst risotto I have ever had in my life. The rice was hard and chalky, with very few actual pieces of butternut squash in it. As my other family members have told me, their main courses were not much better. The beef wellington was disgusting. A dry, tough, overcooked cut of beef with mountains of bland and unappetising vegetables piled plate. Unfortunately, the dessert was not much better. The sauce for my sticky toffee pudding was greasy and extremely salty, and it appeared as if it had been over-boiled, as it was hardening into a solid mass on the plate. Overall, the food was terrible. Not only this, but at 10pm we were told that the restaurant was closing, and that two staff members would hang around until we left, basically them telling us to get out of the restaurant as soon as possible. This would not have been a problem if we were told upon arrival that the restaurant was closing at 10pm, but telling us after it had already meant to be closed made us feel uncomfortable and rushed at the end of our meal. Perhaps even more disappointing and shocking, though, was the customer service response that my family (5 people) received upon complaining. As part of a large group, it felt inappropriate to complain on the night itself. As such, we contacted Grain's Bar the following day with our subpar experience. We also included the fact that we had chosen to dine at Grain's Bar largely due to the photos on their website that show images of food including a cooked breakfast, coffee, and roast dinner, and how after some research we found that these two of these images were stock photos, and one was a photograph of a meal from another restaurant not associated with Grain's Bar. At best, you could say we were met with a cold response. Our comments about the photos on the website were immediately denied, even though we offered to send the links to the original stock photos we had found online. We were told that they had never had a complaint about the food before (which, from looking at some of the reviews on this website, I find hard to believe), and it is all homemade and delicious. We felt our concerns were completely disregarded. We were also told that the other half of our party of 12 were very happy with their food, implying that on this basis we should not have any complains about it, even though we made it very clear in our complaint that it was on behalf of our party of 5. We were told that only one plate came back with food on, a beef wellington. This claim is categorically untrue. For example, I did not finish a single one of my courses, and left at least half of my risotto on the plate as I could not force myself to eat any more. As recompense, we were offered to come back to Grain's Bar for another meal , which, under the circumstances, we felt more than justified in refusing. When speaking with the manager, Lisa, on the phone the next day, we were met with the same frosty and unhelpful response as we had already received. A comment was made about the amount of alcohol our party consumed on the evening, implying that our judgement on the food was not reliable because of this. This exemplifies the rude, aggressive, and utterly unprofessional response we were met with upon complaining about the appalling standard of food at Grain's Bar. After this experience, we will never be returning again, and our custom will be going to the Old Bell Inn down the road from now on, which seems a common theme in other reviews too!
