Not the definitive guide to the Pizzo Calabro Resort
All in all, what you might expect for the money you pay. If you were expecting more, then pay more for a richer experience elsewhere. It met our budget requirements; the kids were very happy (4 and 7); no complaints from them. The animation was exclusively in Italian - what you might expect from a hotel with 95% Italian occupancy. By north European standards, the restaurant would benefit from a staggered dining schedule to avoid waiting for a table or in long queues at the self-service buffet. Although among the throngs of people and ensuing chaos, there is a certain order, and if you don't mind the jostling, you can adapt to the system quite successfully by nicking in when you can, resulting in being seated and ready to eat your three course meal with your family in mere minutes. 'When in Rome....' The swimming pool was boring for older kids, but jazzed up in the afternoon by the presence of the animation bods. The high point of your baking in the sun experience though is the forest walk-through to get to the sea: about ten minutes and worth every step of the journey through an amazing array of fully canopied pine trees and the occasional eucalyptus, to the accompaniment of chattering grasshoppers, (full string orchestra) Never actually saw any but they must have been whoppers! When you actually get to the beach, just bypass all the neatly arranged loungers and go straight for the sea option. When we were there, the kids rode the waves one day, and the next enjoyed the tranquillity of the gentler waves. Every day is slightly different. Blaring music at the beach hut and a DJ who persisted in singing along to the 80s hits in monotones gave us continuous doses of laughter mixed with derision. Rooms - blah de blah....! Important thing is that the beds were comfy, if not entirely fit for a king. We had no complaints, and the best thing was the chirpiness of the cleaning staff every day, like a fully deployed army, but with smiles and Buongiornos! Cabaret was, brace yourself..., not for the serious theatre goer: very much kid centric. Having two sprogs ourselves, we really got into the nightly performances on offer. The stage sets were interactively composed of animators and a million jammy faced kids, all jigging to some unspeakable euro pop. Put your best face on, and don't go on a downer, with the dawning realisation that it is much of the same every night. Go with it! If you want Mantovani, take a look at the faces around you: they clearly don't. Gardens - Absolutely beautiful, 'twas a pity we missed Mandarin season. Francesco, the mini bus driver was happy to take you to the surrounding fishing villages, for a fee; chatty and full of good tips, if you understand Italian. Pizzo was actually quite nice, and the breakwaters made the sea calm. After which, we had a mooch around town, and took in the views and the ice-cream - of which a small discount at Dante's gelateria for guests of the resort was gratefully received. Not much else to say, other than I fully recommend it to those of you who like something of the Fred Pontin/ Billy Butlin spirit minus the 7am hi-de-hi's and the tannoy, but yes, applause does accompany every crockery mishap!

Memories of our wedding 3years ago
Wedding of our friends daughter. POPILIA resort just out side Pizzo The whole area is lovely.picturesque and historic buildings.Beaches are excellent.I is built on a hillside so lots of streets winding and cobbled down to beach .Well worth exploring.
We payed way toooo much for that vacation
Pizzo Calabro resort is located inbetween a town of Pizzo in the south in Lamezia terme airport on the north. That also means in the middle of nowhere, because there is nothing there just the hotel. If you don't rent a car, you will be bored like hell. You can go to Pizzo with shuttle bus from the hotel, but you'll pay 10€/person, which is almost a robbery. Starting from the begining... My family of three persons - me, my wife and the 15yo daugther were there. On the recomendation of the travel agend (which has never been there before, as we found out at the end). We booked "all inclusive" which is the only option (there is nothing arond of the hotel so...). The concept of "all inclusive" has been misunderstud by Pizzo Calabro resort, I thought as I first looked at the welcome list. No towels for the beach included (you have to pay extra), no drinks at the beach included (only water), only artificial coffee included (you pay for the normal coffee,). If you want to be in the first row at the beach - YOU HAVE TO PAY EXTRA etc... Reception: Small one. Two people working there, so you wait... And if you are not good at Italian language - you will need some hand skills to talk with the staff. English ability at Pizzo Calabro resort is not even very poor... It's close to none. Sorrunding: Nice garden, well maintained. I liked to walk under those palm tree. Nice. Room: Nothing close to four star room. But clean. Bathroom was not big, but enough. Shower cabin 80x80 standard. If you're bigger you will have some issues taking a shower. Not enough electric plugs. We are in the 2018 and everybody has his own cell phone, tablet, lap top... We had to "fight" every evening to be able to charge our gagets. We also plug out the TV set. WI-FI - forget it. Signal is much too weak. If you want to use cellular data - also forget it. The reciver outside is overloaded too. Room is air conditioned. Pool: To small for the crowd. Otherwise ok. No music, no entertaiment (except 30 minuts of wather aerobics on the afternoon). Beach: Aprox 400 m walk thru a beautifull forest. Sand (very hot), as mentioned you have to pay to be in the first row. Quiet... Very quiet... Almost to quied. No music, no entertaiment, nothing. A small "bar" at the beach. Only water included in "all inclusive". Restaurant: Big. Enough. For now. Breakfast every day the same. Eggs, some bacon, salami and a lot of sweets. Almost no fresh vegetables... And this artificial coffee, which tasted like plastic. Lunch and dinner was something else. A rich choice of apetizers, pasta, main dishes.. And of course the pizza corner - a perfect pizza. Only that guy, slicing the pizza for you was rude from time to time. As we where there for him and not he for us. But the food was very good. Bar at the pool: On the bar was wather. Free wather. With gas and without it. You were allowed to take it but only with that smal, plastic glas. You are not alowed to put it in to bottle to take it with you in you room (for the night). But you can pay for the bottle of wather. A second robbery. You can get the real coffee there - for cash, of course. Despite "all inclusive" you payed for. And we payed alot... Entertaiment: Nice team of guys and girls. But exept music and dance, I did not understand a word of the show. Everything in Italian. Although there were many non-Italians in the resort. And yes, there is also a gym in the resort. But... In the celler, dirty, not maintained- dangerus. But, I was so bored, that I have trained the whole week for 3 hours every day. Although the condition of the gym was so poor... To summarize this... We payed way too much money for that. Poor all inclusive concept, poor location, poor english ability of the staff, no state of the art resort, poor entertaiment (if any), very booring. It was the worst vacations we every had. I wish we choosed something alse. We will never make a failure like this again. Stay away - NOT RECOMENDED!!! (Two points for the excellent food and well maintained garden).
For all in....it’s not só much all in
We arrived late evening, so there was kind of buffet special for us, I don’t know how long the food was there, but I had the nice smell of sour salad and food that was for hours in the warmth! You never have a second chance for a first impression, and this one was not so good. Rooms are clean, nothing to say about this! Nice garden, and with a walk of 5 min true the trees and palm trees garden you are on the beach. As all in , you have to pay for towels, front line seats. All in drinks includes not to much water, and water. As there is not so much time to have lunch and dinner, and they serve app 800 people , food is average, with little choice of fresh vegetables, poorly prepared, and this in a country of sun ! Animation and comedy are in Italian language, which is normal in Italy , as they think the middle of the world is at their country.Anyway if you don’t speak Italian , it’s impossible to understand, so we went only once. For us,holiday in this resort will stay a once experience.
