Beautifully Haunted History- Negative Reviews Seem A Little Too Harsh
I just stayed the night in room 408, and I am returning again in a few days with my fiancé- just for fun! This hotel is very charming if you can appreciate a location for its history. Do not expect LUXURY- because you will not get it. And I don’t think that is a bad thing. It is a humble And quiet hotel with an incredibly interesting history. I am very into the paranormal and I’ll be staying in room 212 this week- supposedly the most haunted room. Take the time to read about the hotel (lobby books and guest booms) and it will make your stay more fun and enjoyable. Yes, the rooms are outdated. (If you want quiet, request a room in the back of the hotel). But they evoke the era of the gold rush! Enjoy if for what it is, and explore it. The lobby is wonderful to relax in at night and the balcony has a great atmosphere. NOTE: If you call to book, the employee may tell you there are no available rooms for the day...this wasn’t true, as we booked a room right after calling. Not sure if that was due to laziness or mistake. Overall, staff was friendly, accommodating (we needed to change rooms because being too close to the elevator bothered my autistic little brother and they gave us the bridal suite!) and open to answering questions. However, there is no lobby staff after 8pm. So be aware of that and make sure you have what you need before then. There was no one at the desk for check out. But they cut staff hours due to COVID. I think a lot of these negative reviews are too harsh. Be patient and prepared.
This hotel has much history and a terrific location. It looks like they are at work to upgrade the internal amenities. What is sadly lacking is any concept of customer service. We had the 'Presidential Suite' which was largely undecorated and the toilet never worked - to the extent we had to go down to the lobby to use the toilet. There were no staff or housekeeping that seemed to answer the phone. When we arrived in the lobby after dinner on Saturday night there were two families trying to check in. They called the posted phone number - and I texted it - but no answer. If they don't improve their customer service they are in serious danger of going out of business, despite their history and location. Hopefully the owners will read this and other reviews and change their approach to customer service.
Great location in a historic town
The best part was the location of this hotel and the lobby. We enjoyed walking, eating, and shopping up at places along the street. So much history and people are really friendly and generous. The hotel is a historic and has the personality of one. Floors are a bit slanted which adds to the charm. We stayed in the 2 bedroom suite which was comfortable enough but not as large as modern hotel suites. No microwave but a small frig and stove top. You have to bring your own kitchenware as bandits kept stealing the hotels so they no longer supply it.
Historic Hotel = Old but good
We stayed at Historic Cary House Hotel for one night while attending a nearby wedding. Billed as "Historic. Romantic. Elegant" and almost the only game in town. I wasn't disappointed in the accommodations, but historic = old. Floors were a little uneven, carpets a little worn, but the room was cute and the bed was comfortable. Interesting photos in the lobby displays. Close to a couple of nice restaurants right on Main Street, and parking was free. Fairly priced, but it isn't a resort hotel, and does not advertise itself as one. I would stay again if I were in Placerville.
