Nice resort, disappointed with diving

Avaliou em 19 de julho de 2022

I was disappointed by the diving during out stay though the resort itself was lovely. We came to Volivoli to dive the Vatu-I-Ra marine park. Unfortunately, while we spent 5 days diving at the resort, we only went to the marine park once. The diving at the sites we went to most days was great, it was not the world class diving I had expected. Much of the website alludes to the opportunity to see pelagics. However, the dive shop manager said they strictly give to see soft coral. The bigger issue is that most of the days, the dive boats specifically went to sites with little to no current. Unfortunately, you need to dive with current as this is what attracts the marine life and prompts soft corals expansion. I’m not sure why people would go to dive the passage if they weren’t comfortable in current. There were definitely enough divers that the groups could have been split across different boats and dive masters. Actually, most of the days we dove the boats were uncomfortably crowded and claustrophobic. The diver to dive master ratio was also quite high (one day it was 1:2, but the rest was 1:6 - 1:15). The dive masters also had a wide range in experience. One day the dive guides pointed out a bunch of things (octopus, magic coral, eels). The rest of the days the dive guides led the dives but didn’t point anything out except a shark once in a while. A couple of times, the gear was set up incorrectly (attached to empty tanks, regulators put on upside down). The resort itself was generally wonderful. The food and service was great. There was some issues with the hotel reservations. I was ghosted by reservations in the week leading up to my stay when I had tried to pay off the remaining balance via bank transfer. I was told I could just pay when I got to the resort, but then was told I had to pay by credit card rather than a bank transfer b/c it would take too long and got hit with a 3.5% credit card fee. Finally, I felt like there was a lot of nickel and dime-ing. There is a $100 fee for Wi-Fi (which is actually not that expensive and you can just get a phone hotspot). There were only small water jugs available in the room and larger bottles were too small to fit in the refrigerators. Drinks were also really expensive ($14 for a local beer). I think Volivoli has the potential to be outstanding and certainly seemed to be so in the past. However, they are really the only game in town post-COVID and seem to know it.

Scuba dive excellence on Fijis north SunCoast

We had 7 days diving on a mix of inshore reefs, midway reefs and the 45 min speed ride to Vatu I RA Marine Park, providing increasing water clarity but stronger currents, further out. The reefs vary in structure, walls , bommies and several intricate mazes of canyons and swim throughs, all with undamaged coral, large shoals of good variety of tropical fish, extraordinary colours. We also spotted reef sharks, barracuda and other pelagics plus the tiny stuff such as nudibranchs etc. The dive operation is efficient and friendly, light hearted but safety conscious - all locally trained and resident Fijian staff. Not much to do except dive and relax. The local tours are quite expensive and a erratic in terms of scheduling but the experience of the place is conducive to extreme morning activity and relaxing afternoons., so you might not want to leave the resort The food is extremely good so make the most of menu variety and the fun wait staff.

Dove holiday

Just finishing up a week long dive holiday with our club. Great diving. Exceptional service both in the resort and at the dive centre. The facilities are a little dated. Wifi is expensive and not available in most rooms. My only beef is that there is little to do apart from diving. We’d dive in the morning, have a wonderful lunch then sleep or relax all afternoon. Whilst that may sound like heaven to some, I like to be active and occupied. The food was outstanding.

"Fabulous and incredibly welcoming"

Our whole experience was first class. From our first email contact with Marian and then from the moment we arrived until we departed we were welcomed and made to feel very special. The owners, the Darling family and staff are all truly amazing and we thank each and every one very much for making our trip fabulous. We stayed in an Ocean View Villa which was really lovely. The villa was spacious and offered privacy with a large balcony and fab views. We thought all the accommodation options looked great no matter what level you choose and the luxury ocean view villas with private pools just look extraordinary. The restaurant offered excellent meals (thank you chefs and the wonderful restaurant staff!) and there are plenty of drink options from the bars at the resort. You should not miss happy hour watching sunset at the Ra Bar......amazing! We also did some great dive trips during our stay and it was all made easy with the help of Ra Divers. Thank you to Simon, Josh, Pola and the whole dive crew who are a well oiled machine. We look forward to returning to Volivoli Beach Resort again!! :) Caroline & Chris

Previous review from hubbys perspective. This is from Wife Jenna’s perspective. Everything is awesome! But to bullet a few highlights: #Intro Diving Course Josh & Mogo & Maria. The best instructors one could ask. I was a first time slightly nervous diver. Completely put me at ease. Will be back with my Paddi Certificate! #Massage ladies are unreal. So good I went back for a second! Tito’s Village tour is a must do. A traditional Fiji experience. Incl Kava. The waterfall is spectacular, refreshing, & the Fijian kids provide free entertainment. So cute. Even got to touch a wild horse which they named Kiwi after me! #Food was a massive highlight. Make sure you pre order full board meal plan. #Family feel - Geraldine is Steve’s right hand & boy she’s good at what she does. So hospitable. Leads be example to her wonderful staff, thanks G for being a shining light you rock! Finished with a highlight Lovo experience. Every Thursday evening. Make sure your stay includes this night. One question we had pre trip was how many days do you need at Voli? We arrived burnt out after our wedding, and felt rejuvenated after 5 days & ready for the next adventure on Denarau. If you were full time diving of course you could do longer, but for R & R we felt 5 days was perfect. Finally to the Darling family, you have created something very special. Thanks for your Kiwi hospitality. Youv survived the storm (COVID) now is a time for you to get the business you deserve. Vinaka.
