Best hotel in Puerto Rico

I’ve just returned from an anniversary getaway to The St. Regis and I was so sad to leave. Every part of the trip was perfect.
We arrived in the early afternoon and had the hotel organize private transportation from the airport. The arrival and airport greeting was seamless. The hotel is approximately half an hour away.
We checked into our St Regis Oceanfront suite. The suite was very large, with a bedroom, large ensuite, living room, bar, and a second bathroom with shower in the living room. The view of the ocean was unbeatable from the second floor.
The hotel was only at 25% capacity because it was low season. It felt like we had our own private island.
The grounds are stunning. I have stayed at many hotels in San Juan but this was much more intimate and luxurious.
However, what really set the hotel apart from others was the top notch service. The butler team works tirelessly to ensure that every guest’s needs are met. Every staff member was unfailingly friendly and helpful.
I had read some negative reviews before we arrived. Yes, the hotel and food is expensive. But I didn’t really expect anything to be cheap when I booked at the St Regis. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for in life. And at the St Regis, I paid and received unbeatable service and accommodations.
A few helpful tips. There are limited food options. For dinner, there are only two options at the hotel: the fine Dining Paros and the St Regis bar. A short walk on the beach (or a short golf cart ride by a staff member) can you take you to the Beach Club. Every meal was delicious but if you are staying for a week you may get bored of the food. Another on-site restaurant option would be nice since the hotel is far away from anything else.
There are tiny little bugs outside in the evenings. Take advantage of the anti-bug wipes in the room to prevent them from biting.
I can’t wait to return. I’ve already booked a return trip in January with my entire family.
Great staff and beautiful property -misses on the basic stuff

Stayed five nights at this beautiful property in early October. The property is gorgeous the grounds are stunning, our room (St Regis Suite) one of the nicest rooms I've ever stayed in. The St. Regus is in a quiet area, be mindful if you book here, going off site is a little tough - you will need to rent a car or pay $100 for transportation each way. Restaurants excursions etc typically 30 to 40 minutes away, but if you want to get away for a few days and chill on the property - it's a great venue for that.
I write this review with mixed emotions because it's very clear that the staff is excellent (especially the butlers) they try hard they're very willing to accommodate, additionally when we brought issues to management they could not have been nicer and worked hard to make it right. My concern is basic simple things that any restaurant, any diner, any bartender could nail without blinking, the St. Regis (as my dad used to say) couldn't find their way out of a paper bag.
Our first evening here we ordered from the tapas restaurant. We ordered the beef tartare to share, I ordered a bacon cheeseburger, for my main my companion ordered the pumpkin rice. When the beef tartare came out it had one slice of toast so we requested a second slice since we were sharing. While they made it, I cut the one slice in half and we started to enjoy the appetizer until the second slice of toast came out.
When we got the cheque for dinner we were uttered stunned to find we were charged $5 for that extra slice of toast! Meanwhile the upcharge for bacon for my burger was $3. Unfortunately my cheeseburger came out without the bacon, as the waiter forgot to mark the request on the ticket -( this marked start of pretty much almost every single meal we ordered having a mistake - more on that).
Now we did complain to management about the excessive charge for the toast and they did take it off the bill, but I have to say that stuck with me the entire trip. How is a slice of toast $5 and bacon strips $3? Look we're at the St Regis, food is outrageous - my mini cheeseburger was $34 fine we'll pay it....but $5 for an extra piece of toast on a share plate? Utterly outrageous.
Next was breakfast at Sea Grapes. I ordered eggs over easy with wheat toast. I ordered this three times in the 5 days we were here. Never once did it come out right. We were even joking with the wait staff. Twice the eggs were so overdone I literally had to send them back. On our very last day, the eggs finally they came out perfect! I never did get the toast correct however - not one time. It either came out wrong (white) or the eggs came out and proceeded to get cold while I waited for the toast. Like I said - basic stuff. You bring the eggs, bacon and toast out at the same time... that's breakfast service 101. Midweek the resort was very quiet about 20% capacity so it's not about being overcrowded.
I really couldn't tell you why it was such a struggle. Drink orders wrong, lunch orders delayed, (lunch should not take 1.5 hours).
Another example: Our suite included coffee service in the morning, I requested hot coffee, my companion iced. Twice we only got a glass of ice and a coffee cup for the hot. Once we got two glasses of ice - with a carafe of hot coffee - no coffee cup for hot coffee. Finally the last two morning we got glass with coffee and ice (yay) and a coffee cup and a carafe of hot. Again - this is basic stuff: coffee order: 1 iced 1 hot. Now again, when we pointed out these errors, the staff was very quick to please and correct. I'm not sure if these issues are operational or training but at a 5 star, 6 diamond resort it shouldn't be happening.
Our last full day we went over to the beach club, it's about 11:30am and we were swimming in the pooI. We were asked to leave the pool so they could clean it. Really? Saturday morning, prime time resort full of people (occupancy now at 70) and now they choose to clean the pool? Again - this is basic stuff, clean it at 8:30 am not 11:30 am while asking your guests (paying a $99 a day resort fee) to leave the pool for the crew to do so. We brought this to management and they kindly removed the resort fee for that day, (again very polite and extremely accommodating) but it shouldn't be happening at a resort of this caliber.
I will say our best meals both were at Paros. We had the Tomahawk steak special (fantastic - perfect meal and service) and we had a chef's tasting AMAZING!
I am hopeful that most of these issues were driven due to a post covid environment. I know many areas are struggling with staffing. I'll also note that none of these issues resulted in our stay not being enjoyable. It's a beautiful resort, the people are lovely, the buildings are stunning, and the staff does work so hard and go out of their way to please the guests. But meals are a big component of any vacation and the spotty, hit and miss meal situation won't have us running back. As one would expect, the meals here are extremely expensive, its very tough to leave and go off site to eat as most restaurants are at least 30 minutes away.
My advice to the resort is to just simply tighten up meal service especially breakfast, to provide your guests with the experience they come to expect.
