Cockroach Infestation at Hotel 81 Palace

It was supposed to be a 2-day stay, from 16th to 18th February, 2023. On that 1st night of 16th, after my shower and when I was about to sleep, I found a cockroach running on the writing desk. This GREATLY Shocked and surprised me. I had always assumed that Hotel 81 was cockroach-free. As I had made such a horrifying discovery, I investigated the room further. I found another cockroach staying very still, just quietly resting, in clear view, on the wall in the room. This was too great a shock for me. I immediately packed my bags and wanted to exit this Hotel 81 Palace. The Front Desk staff, and the Manager, Mr Joe Chua, were informed about my discovery of cockroaches in my room. Mr Chua immediately re-assigned me to another room to see if it would be better. I really fervently hoped that this other room was cockroach-free. So I moved the bed to check below it - there were some unknown bottle caps and some debris and rubbish - but it was ok - I found no cockroaches. Unfortunately - behind the headboard of the bed itself - I found another cockroach. I was able to take a video of this vermin, and showed it to Mr Chua. Mr Chua was able to refund my 2nd day stay, for which I thank him. But for the 1st day stay, he said he was not able to refund, and could I myself write in to Hotel 81 Senior Management to request refund. So Now, I wrote in to Hotel 81 to request for refund of my 1st day stay. So far, they have not replied, nor have they acknowledged receipt of my email. Actually, I had to leave their hotel On That First Day's Stay - at approximately 11.00 PM. At the midnight hour of 12.28 AM, I was fortunate I could book an emergency night's stay at another hotel. I hope to Never have another such a horrifying experience, as the one I got at Hotel 81 Palace that night. Being cockroach-free is very important, even more so if it is a budget hotel.

Myself and wife had booked this hotel via a well known flights and hotel website. The photos of Hotel 81 Palace must be over twenty years out of date and bear little resemblance to the scruffy, dirty and dingy place it is now. A couple of the photos of the hotel on the website show a fridge in the room but the receptionist confirmed that none of the hotel rooms at Hotel 81 Palace have fridges. We checked in on the evening of Wednesday 19 October 2022 with a planned check out date of 27 October 2022. Our hearts sank when the taxi pulled up outside the hotel. The street was filled with prostitutes (females and transvestite males) plying their trade, with lots of men hanging around. Whilst at the hotel reception we witnessed a man bringing a hooker into the hotel and booking a room by the hour. We were given our key and went in the lift up our room. The corridor smelled fusty and looked like it hadn't been painted in years. Our hotel room bore no resemblance to the photos on the website and was scruffy. All the furniture was cheap plywood that was years old and covered in chips. Nothing had been polished and the room had not been painted for many years. There were ants crawling on the wall in the bathroom and there was what appeared to be 'personal' lubricant smeared on the dressing table surface. The bathroom mirror was covered in unidentifiable stains. The bedroom smelled fusty and unclean and the so called air conditioning was so old and clapped out it had little effect. The sweat was pouring off us. My wife was nearly in tears so I used my phone to access another hotel room booking site to get us another hotel room elsewhere in Singapore. The hotel receptionists were two young guys and were really nice and helpful. They were apologetic. They called a taxi for us to take us to our other hotel. The taxi driver told us that the area where Hotel 81 Palace is, Geylang, is the red light area for Singapore and quite dangerous. He said he would not walk around Geylang at night. He said the Singapore government need to clean it up. Shocking that internationally famous hotel booking websites haven't actually sent someone out to check on these hotels. I've said my piece. It's up to the reader to decide of they want to stay here or not. Conclusion: Rubbish hotel in a rubbish part of town that is seedy and dangerous. Heed the advice of a UK couple who got stung and had to fork out £770 on another hotel.

Best hotel!very friendly and helping staff especially "yani".The charismatic receptionist helped my sister in locating and finding her phone which she lost in night safari area😎Although the rooms were small bit tidy and clean.

Comfortable room, excellent facilities and excellent service from the staff. The front office manager (Mr. Nick, I believe) is extremely polite, courteous and helpful. The location provides ease of access to the city and you will find all that you need within walking distance. Thank you for a lovely stay!

The hotel is right in the middle of a bad area in Singapore but this is what you would get in Singapore for the money. Everything about hotel is maximum 2 star except for customer service. The people at front desk put their max effort. Other than that, rooms are quite small and so is the washroom. Bed is rock hard but clean and AC is good. Room had slight cigarette smell as if someone smoked there few days ago although they are smoke-free. Ok room if you are just using it to sleep the night out and don't mind the hard bed
