We were booked to stay for 2 nights, the first room they gave us was horrible, grubby headboard, tiny Velux window that was nearly in the ceiling, ancient battered furniture. We asked for another room and were shown to a better one, not marvellous, but we knew we would have to pay if we left. The dinner on the first evening was extremely average, whichever Chef got them their reputation and awards for food is obviously long gone, the fish pie contained barely any fish, the haggis bonbons were dry as dust, however the steak was fairly decent. The breakfast the next morning was dreadful, the young boy waiting on (untrained and by himself in a room full of guests) forgot everything we asked for including our actual breakfast, when he did bring it, the sausages were pale and insipid and you could have played tennis with the rubbery poached egg, and it was all just about cold. We arrived 10 minutes early for dinner, to be told they couldn't serve us for 45 minutes as they had a Bar mitzvah on in the function room! WE LEFT and went to the lovely Italian down the road (Hunters Stables), which was fantastic. This hotel is being run on a shoestring, one woman (Kat) was trying to do everything, she was excellent but fighting a losing battle with no waiting staff etc.. The hotel is tired and has been sadly neglected, old knackered furniture, fires unlit, missing lightbulbs in chandeliers, even Fawlty Towers would have been a treat after this stay. We heard from locals that it USED to be nice but had been neglected in the last few years, that's an understatement! And if you are brave enough to stay here, you won't get your bed made up, no clean towels unless you ask, no loo roll replaced unless you leave the empty roll outside your door, and even then non arrived ( should have taken our own!!!) and bathroom has black mould.
Fantastic breakfast but not a great stay

A room was booked for me & my husband to stay the night of our wedding and I can’t say it was a pleasant experience. We were looking forward to staying because as locals we both enjoy the Buccleuch for food.
Some guests from our wedding have Gordon the room key as a member of staffed asked them whilst they were having a drink if they were going to the wedding… I don’t think this is acceptable as we had prior arrangements with my husbands parents who were also staying and who had our bags to put in the room.
We went to our room about 1130pm and on the way up there was a tray outside a door with stale food & half drunk cups of tea, I looked past this as I know this place can be busy… however on the way down to breakfast that tray was still there & I just find that a bit grotty.
The room was severely outdated. The bed 2 singles pushed together and was the most uncomfortable sleep. The duvet also felt damp. I never complained on the night as it was late and I was just shattered.
The breakfast for me was lovely and the waiting staff helpful BUT the milk was off so when asked to replace we were given yet another off milk, finally got a fresh one but no apologies were made.
My husband ordered bacon on toast and the bacon was so badly burnt he just left it.
I really hate complaining especially about a place that I enjoy going to but some other guests from our wedding stayed and had the same experiences. I have emailed the Buccleuch about these issues and have had no reply.
Like arriving at the oasis

After walking from Dryburgh Abbey along this relatively short , but in places demanding , stretch of St Cuthbert's Way I was so glad to see the Buccleuch Arms again . We stopped for some liquid refreshment but could have availed ourselves of a quite extensive menu . It was just wonderful to sit in their delightful garden and get ourselves ready for the walk back !

After a bad experience a few miles away we booked a room last minute at The Buccleuch Arms. The staff in the main desk were extremely polite and helpful and that set the tone for the stay!
The room was big enough for two of us and two dogs.
Our room overlooked the main road outside which you get used to after half an hour in the room!
The evening meal was delicious and the breakfast was one of the tastiest I’ve tasted!
Thoroughly recommend this place situated near local walks and beautiful towns..
An OK visit

Stayed as it was opening up from Covid close.
The stay was OK overall but there were shortcomings.
It had a reduced menu for dinner which we were not aware off prior to arrival, Food was fair but nothing special. Plenty of it.
Bar was the only place in Scotland not able to provide a Scottish single malt whisky. There were four Irish and one Japanese malts. Only Scottish whisky was a Bells grain whisky. Plenty gins and draft ales.
Breakfast was good but service was all over the place, no menus, had to ask for juice, salt, pepper, jam, marmalade.
On the plus side the staff were good, service quick and the bedroom had a good shower and a comfy bed. No tea and coffee in the room due to Covid. Sign said bed only changed every four days.
Not in my opinion a four star establishment as advertised.
