Shocked in so many ways
I'll start with the great sides...for an older hotel, it is in immaculate condition. Its updated and no signs of aging. From the parking lot to inside a room, its super clean. It would pass a white glove test for sure. In the rooms, which I look at every crevasse, was outstanding. Even in the bathroom, in the corners of the shower at the floor, you would usually see soap/dust/unknown substance build up. That was not found anywhere. Very spacious and comfortable rooms. The sofa had a chase which was a nice change of pace. The grounds are upkept nicely. Basketball court was in use so we never got a chance to go in. But the putting green is fun to mess around on. The astroturf is taken care of, no holes or worn out spots. Its pretty well lit for night time swings. The front desk does have putters and balls to borrow (for free even) The .outdoor heaters are a nice touch as well. We didn't try the pool as it was too cold, but it looked inviting. There is a train the frequently runs by. My room was pretty close to the tracks, on the 2nd floor, and it didn't bother us at all. It was heard of course while we were awake. But not while sleeping. Unfortunately, the downsides that killed the thought of anything higher than a 3 star. As soon as I started to check in, the front desk clerk didn't come across as friendly or polite. As if she "didn't have anything nice to say, don't say anything" attitude. Very little information other than the direction to the elevators, breakfast times, and $16 per day for parking was given. I was using a discount so I guess I wasn't privileged to know anything more. When we got to the room, tried to turn on the TV. It was on for a split second and then lost the signal. Tried numerous times to get it on, ended up calling for help. Maintenance came by. Messed with for a while. Then got it on. I was thankful and felt like an idiot. But moment he walked out the door, it shut off again. I was about to jump up and catch him but decided it wasn't even worth it. I tried repeating what he had did, but nothing. I gave up and my son tired and it finally worked. I guess it needed time to warm up? Had no idea there was free beer or wine. But whatever. On my reservation, I requested 2 extra pillows and an extra blanket. I got nothing. Asked the front desk for them. I asked for another comforter because I hate the feeling of the brown ones. She refused that. But sent up 2 flat pillows. I Also asked for a 2 pm check out, im a silver member, I thought i could at least get that. Nope. She stressed noon was the check out time. The next morning I then had to ask where an ice machine could be found. They gave me a small bag (they collected ice and made up bags in plastic trash liners) and then told me "your freezer in room makes ice". That would of been useful info the night BEFORE. When I return to my room, I notice the door didnt close completely. All I had to do was push, and it was open. I had to take things down to my car and discovered a white salt looking substance all over my car. I suppose tree sap, even though I was the ONLY car covered in this stuff. I get back to the room to find house keeping ready to knock on my door at 930am. I said no way, come back at noon. I went to open my door, but the dead bolt was engaged. My son came to open the door and couldn't pull it open. I had to use my shoulder and push into it. Thats when I see the dead bolt would engage as soon as the door closed. So had no one been in my room, I would of been completely locked out. Front desk said they'd have maintenence check into it. I have never felt so irritated and dumbfounded at the same time. If using a discounted rate makes me a lesser species, make it known so I dont ever use this hotel again. By the way, $16 for parking is robbery. There is no where else to park. Theres no other businesses around to take up your parking. Why on earth do you charge????
Noise
This is our second stay at the Residence Inn San Juan Capistrano. Upon check-in, I asked for the quietest room possible. The agent working the front desk told me I had a choice between a room with noise from the Amtrak train or another room with some noise from the train and a lot of noise from a very busy street. I guess I appreciate the honesty? There was a decent amount of noise coming into the room from the street and early the the morning as people were packing up their cars as you could hear car doors being slammed. The hotel does offer ear plugs. The room was your standard Residence Inn room. It's spacious, clean, and has a fully stocked kitchen. Probably one of the more affordable options for a family visiting the Dana Point/San Juan areas. When we were there the pool was open, but the fire pit was closed due to Covid. Their hot breakfast had been downgraded to a brown bag with an orange, small water, cheap packaged muffin, and a granola bar. Though, this is the norm for most of the chain hotels that offer an included breakfast buffet. Another downside was that their coffee was empty by 8:30am and not refilled.
Not a Covid-safe hotel experience
This is a typical Residence Inn with a friendly staff and a good location. Unfortunately, the front desk and hotel staff do not enforce the mask rules that are posted in the lobby and at the doors (and are subject to CA ordinance.) Every time I entered the lobby I encountered a guest not wearing a mask, and/or not wearing a mask correctly (covering their mouth and nose.) And not once did I see a hotel staff person ask them to put on their mask correctly. I was nervous about staying in a hotel during the Covid pandemic, but the posted cleaning and hygiene and mask guidelines somewhat reassured me. It was very unfortunate that they were not being completely adhered to. If Covid safety is important to you, I would pick a different hotel in San Juan Capistrano.
Pros and cons!
Good - The one bedroom was a good size. Basketball courts were great for the kids. Conveniently located because it was right next-door to the Costco in within 15 minutes of strands Beach. Barbecue outside was very handy. Bad -Front desk person who name is Hope was a very hostile individual. I tried to use humor with her but it didn’t work. She was very abrupt and did not want to be put out with any requests. Other front desk workers were very nice.A door dash worker came in and hope told him to go right up to the floor. Not cool during Covid but she obviously did not want to take the time to call the guest. Pool was closed during the week and they didn’t let us know which was unfortunate. Covid breakfast which was hard boiled egg and a cheap granola bar Covid breakfast which was hard boiled egg and a cheap granola bar Overall, we enjoyed our stay
Near the PCH
Enjoyed staying here for a night prior to starting a motorcycle ride up the Pacific Coast Highway. The room was fine and the bed comfortable. The location is great with the water being close by, as well as the PCH. The hotel is near the highway and at a busy intersection yet the room was quiet. The only drawback is there isn’t much within walking distance, but there are places to eat a very short ride away.
