Simple and clean. Would stay again.

The room was clean and functional with coffee and water provided. The room was worn a bit, and some extreme noise occurred for a while on the first morning, presumably when the neighbors were showering. It sounded like a plumbing issue, but it was constant - not like a water hammer. The pool was pleasant an little used. The restaurant has inconsistent hours and the three times we tried to use it, during normal breakfast or dinner, it was closed. All other times we saw it, it was open. We would definitely stay here again when visiting family, and consider it better than the Santee Best Western, if only because it is quieter and less noisy.

We stayed at the lodge for 2 nights. It was dark inside the room with insufficient lighting. The tv was small. The beds were very uncomfortable. The carpet was old and stained. Cobwebs abound. No usb charging ports. We were in room 101 which was next to a gate that self locks so when ever someone arrived or departed we heard and felt it slam. The ac worked well. The shower was great water pressure. When we went to take a shower in the early morning we found that there was no soap. The desk is not 24x7 so nothing we could do. The ice machine was out of order. The pool was great. The jacuzzi was old and needed sandblasting but worked well. The Bar and Grill served very average food. The website lists golf course views for some rooms which is actually a dirt pit that holds a driving range. All the personnel we met we wonderful but only there part time. Thankfully someone was at the desk when we came back about noon on Sunday because our key cards would not work to anything. Also, when walking down to the pool by all the rooms on the ground floor we saw a small snake which found its way into a crevasse of the building. That was not giving me a great feeling! This place is old and in dire need of refurbishing. I would not stay here again.

Decent but people talking woke me up, $10 / day resort fee and no free breakfast, 25 minutes from downtown.

Rooms: pretty decent - looks fairly recently remodeled, the shower is actually placed high so tall people can be comfortable. Dresser looked a bit beat up and the "smore's colored wall paint striped (cream and brown) I could have done without. People walking by my room talking woke me up - not sound-proof enough. 25 min drive from downtown SD. Missing a do not disturb sign and a laundry bag - choice hotels should really include these "basics". They charge a $10 / day B.S. resort fee and there's not even a free breakfast. The outdoor patio / golf course view restaurant / bar is nice with some kind of yacht rock live music while we were there. Food at the restaurant is basic American fare - noting exotic or really "wow" factor but not bad. The room was very clean. They do have event spaces - the hotel hosted a high school reunion and when the event was over around 11:30 pm, all the attendees were chattering super loud right outside the rooms (rooms open to the outdoors, rather than a hallway) so it was super noisy while we were trying to sleep. Pool and jacuzzi were nice but don't wear your best swimsuit in the jacuzzi - I had a brand new suit and it's now snagged up on the butt because of the rough surface of the jacuzzi. If you want to know the "scene" at the bar - it's mostly old golf dudes. There are some families and non-golfers who stay here but not exactly a hip and trendy scene here. I'm not an old golf dude so not really wanting to hang out at the bar.

Not a hotel, but nice and clean.

Not a hotel, but a motel. When I pulled up I was disappointed at first, but once I walked behind the restaurant and saw the beautiful golf course and flowering plants, I got over it. Room was extremely clean and very quiet for a weekend stay. Staff was very nice and helpful. Bed was comfortable. Lighting wasn’t great and there wasn’t a way to let more light in without someone being able to see in, but it worked out fine. Other reviews mentioned the rooms were outdated, but my room looked like it had been recently updated. Newish tile in bathroom, clean carpet. Great for a motel, if that’s what your looking for. The “Ascend Hotel Collection” is a little of a misnomer, but I’d stay here again.

I'll never stay here again

I was excited to find a hotel nearby to my new grand daughter as I plan lots of visits to Santee. But after one stay at this property I won't be going back. There's rarely anyone around to check you in or out...it says to 'closed until 230pm' on the office door. I didn't check to see how long they stick around. My room was in an annex building away from the main building and frankly dark and creepy at night...the first night I slept with a light on. I haven't done that since I was a kid! The furniture was tattered and torn...see the photos. No one was around at 10am when I checked out ('closed until 2:30pm' again) to even complain to OR to give me a copy of my bill...just a drop box for the key. I assumed they'd send me a receipt by email but crickets. And I'm still waiting eleven days later for the return of my $200 deposit that was billed to my credit card. I've called the property numerous times and there's never any answer. You can't even leave a voice message! I contacted Choice Hotels and opened a case number...plus left a poor review at the Choice Hotels website. It took over a week for them to get around taking the $200 deposit off my credit card and only after I'd complained. I did hear from the general manager with apologies, etc. Too late.
