Good stay for a family
We stayed for a family New Year's getaway because everything in Minnesota is closed due to the pandemic. This Homewood Suites has been around for awhile -- we first stayed here 10-15 years ago. Since then, the furniture and decor have had a refresh. There were a few things showing their age (rust on the door hinges in the bathroom, kitchen chairs were banged up) but everything was in working order. I appreciated the chair and ottoman in the living room. We had the two-bedroom/two-bathroom suite which was great for our four teenagers. Three TVs, a table to play cards on, and space for those who wanted to ring in the new year without disturbing those who went to bed earlier made it ideal for us. As far as location, it's not right in the thick of things, but it's a quick drive to the mall, restaurants, and activities. As for covid protocols, here is what we found: The city of Sioux Falls has a mask mandate, as does Hilton, but still only about half of the people we encountered in the hallways were wearing masks. One of the desk employees wore her mask only over her mouth. Housekeeping is upon request only, and must be requested by 7 am for same-day service. There is no evening reception. Breakfast has reduced hot options and paper plates but is otherwise pretty much unchanged. The tables are not distanced any more than usual. The pool/hot tub area has limited capacity. This is a comfortable hotel for our family and we would stay here again.
Wonderful Hotel
Of the dozen hotels we stayed at during our 3-week vacation "out west," this was my favorite. I love the fact that the hotel wasn't going overboard out about a fake pandemic and that guests roamed the property like normal. The fitness room was even open here. We learned that South Dakota never closed down anything and ended up with one of the lowest coronavirus infection rates in the country. Thus the nonchalant policy here about masks. Lots of people heading to Sturgis for bike week congregated in the hotel lounge, enjoying themselves - no concerns about social distancing. When we'd pulled into the parking lot, we could barely find a parking space, while everywhere else we stayed there were 6-20 cars max parked overnight. Our queen suite was huge, with a fully furnished kitchen including a 2-burner range, dishwasher, good size refrigerator, and built-in full size microwave. We had a small dinette area with a table and two chairs, living room, bedroom, vanity room, and bathroom. Everything was spotless clean. Furnishings included a love seat, flat screen TV, end tables and coffee table, work desk with plenty of charging outlets, double wide 3-drawer dresser, night stands, and lots of lamps. The bed was divine, as are all Hilton brand beds. I wish something could be done about Hilton pillows, though, because they're always too soft. Our suite had a full size tub - most appreciated, since a hot bath is a great way to unwind after a long day of traveling. Towels were thick and plentiful, and Neutrogena toiletries were provided. I loved the full-length mirrored closet doors. The vanity area around the sink was large and had plenty of room for personal care items. The hotel was so inviting and the room so comfortable that I could see myself living here for a month while I explored the area. We'll definitely visit Homewood Suites again if we're in Sioux Falls.
Love this chain
We always have good experiences with this chain and this hotel was no different. Room was spacious and clean, staff was friendly, and breakfast was great despite the limited menu due to the pandemic. They offered hot items and we were able to sit in the breakfast area.
Not a safe place for pandemic
The front desk associate at check-in was friendly, but not real focused. The real problem was face masks were encouraged but not required. So like in all Homewood Suites there are a lot of people congregating In the lobby and breakfast area. Hardly anybody had a mask on. Breakfast was self serve and very little safety practices and no social distancing system. The kitchen in the room was not stocked with dish soap, paper towels, and was missing a lot of dishes. The pullout sofa may have been the most uncomfortable ever and the couch is only a two cushion couch so too small to stretch out without pulling out the bed. The air conditioner in the bedroom made a terrible sound when it kicked on. The courtyard was nice.
No masks-COVID
Please be aware that not one person on the staff was wearing a mask during this pandemic. This included the person setting out breakfast and the 2 maids who also weren’t practicing social distancing but working from the same cart at the same time. Very disappointed from the Hilton brand especially since we were traveling for medical reasons and couldn’t choose not to travel
