Disappointing

Avaliou em 7 de novembro de 2022

Our original booking was with The Mecure Dolphin Hotel almost next door to The Star but was moved here as the mecure had to close for an unspecified reason. So lets start The room we were given was what can only be called as almost a basement room, the windows (none of which are double or secondary glazed) were ground level right on the car park - they were all frosted windows so no natural view but at least nobody could look in I guess. On checking in we found the toilet seat completely broken reported straight away to the uninterested gentleman on reception as we were on our way out for a mooch round Southampton. On return was told that they don't have a maintenance guy on site until Monday - So god help if anything else goes wrong on a Weekend?? Between floors is so thin we could hear the guest upstairs on his mobile phone all night. The bed and pillows are comfy but thats about it....next morning went to make a coffee and what would you know the Kettle wouldn't boil unless you stood their and held it in place. As for the hotel areas, very tired and rundown. No restaurant or bar service on a Sunday evening, Breakfast looked like it had been dragged out of the 80's. Not the place you would want to stay and definitely won't be back again anytime soon. Again this was not our choice and was assured that it was a "good" replacement from the Mecure - obviously not.

Historic, great location and very good room…

Avaliou em 25 de setembro de 2022

This is a hotel which has loads of history and parts of the building remain stuck in the past and require modernisation yet this cannot be said for the newly decorated updated bedroom. Location is excellent for the city centre with all the shops, bars and restaurants, easy reach of the train station and bus links around the city as well as the docks for those leaving by cruise liner. The wonderful architecture of the reception area is a little jaded now, however, the welcome at reception was warm, friendly and efficient. The walk to the room took me through the restaurant (which is now only serving breakfast), the dark glum corridors did not instill confidence in what I was to find in the room. The newly decorated room was a surprise, yes in was compact in terms of size but you had all you required for the stay. The bed was comfortable and aided a good night's sleep. The television and Wi-Fi were excellent. The bathroom was spotlessly clean and functional. So the room was very good. Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Adequate for two nights

My room was clean and tidy and the bed comfortable. However, be warned that the the hotel is extremely tired and this is reflected in aspects of the rooms. For example, my shower was not more than a dribble and the curtain rail fell down. Doubt I would come back, particularly at the price point.

Rats!

Awful stay at the hotel. Saw a rat run across the restaurant floor and the security just shrugged it off. Old fashioned, smelly, bizarre layout of staircases to get to a first floor room. Dirty bathrooms with see-through doors and no locks… don’t stay. Watermarks all over the ceilings…

Adequate for Two Nights with Good Breakfast

I had made a mistake with a booking and had to book in at the last minute for which I was grateful . The people were very friendly and the breakfast excellent. The hotel has very old world charm and this was appreciated. It was in the middle of a heatwave and my room was right at the top of the hotel and very hot. But there was really nothing they could do about that. A little money spent on updating the wiring and the decor of the hotel would preserve the charm and allay the complaints of previous reviewers. I found the surrounding area very good and Weatherspoons next door a bonus. I would certainly stay again but the rate I got was rather expensive - perhaps because I booked at the last minute.
