Not As Nice As It Looks

The location is good and the view of Lake Huron is beautiful. Unfortunately, that's about it for positivity. When we entered the room, we noticed the pretty view and that the screen door to the balcony was propped up on an outside wall! How Housekeeping didn't notice that and report it to Maintenance is beyond me!! We called about it and a wonderful maintenance guy named Joey was there quickly to replace a broken piece on the door and got it back on the track. Apparently, prior occupants didn't care and left the door open and we had several dozen bugs flying around in our room. Again, why didn't housekeeping notice so many insects crawling on the ceiling and walls!! Housekeeping also did not take the time to check the wall-mounted bath gel dispenser in the bathroom -- empty! The carpet in our room was filthy and stained....years past the time it should have been replaced, or at the very least, deep-cleaned. Clothes hangers --- there were six hangers in a room for 4 people. Other than the view (we paid extra for), this place doesn't have much to recommend you spend over $500 on.
The free breakfast was decent and the staff working it were definitely the hardest working people employed there. Front desk clerk was constantly outside the front door smoking whenever we were around. And housekeeping, forget it. Yes, I know about worker shortages but most of the issues were easily fixable, basic items, or had been allowed to build up from long neglected.
Not as it says.

Original room had a wet spot on the carpet, a dirty floor, the sliding door did not lock, didn't seem that clean. Nicely moved us to another. The sliding door didn't lock, they installed a bar, smoke detector missing. The view is lovely to watch the sunrise each day, good parking. Heated pool, may be heated a bit. No one enforces people jumping/running about the pool. Hardly any employees wore masks, the maintenance, cleaners did not and none of the guests did. In a state currently deemed high transmission rate, this was ridiculous. The breakfast was typical IHG which is nice but took to our room...no masks. It is false advertising to claim such things online and not do so (covid protocol, wifi, heated pool). People above us had kids...we should not be aware of this. The internet was unreliable in both rooms and they said they have boosters that don't work to come to the lobby. Lobby=groups of no mask people. I've stayed at an IHG property in another state since, did as advertised.

We were assigned room 115 (basement). We thought the smell was from the pool, but it became apparent that was not the case. This room with a hot tub had a major odor problem that we could only guess was a mold problem. In addition, I made the mistake of venturing out onto the grass outside our sliding glass door near the fire pit. I dodged goose poop everywhere I stepped - not pleasant. This was one of the worst Holiday Inn Expresses I have stayed at. Not a good experience.
Comfortable and Clean

This is a nice, clean hotel. Its location is great because it is right on the water and if you get a lakefront room, you can sit on a balcony or patio and enjoy the view. I had a room on the fourth floor with a balcony. My room was clean and quite comfortable. As I have learned to expect from any Holiday Inn, the bedding was high-quality and the bed was wonderfully comfortable. There were a variety of pillows with different levels of firmness. There was a nice desk in the room and a comfortable chair. There was a refrigerator and the vanity for the bathroom is outside of the bathroom so if you are getting ready while your traveling companion is taking a shower, there is plenty of room for that.
There were just a few minor issues that detracted from me giving this hotel five stars. The air conditioning unit in the room was weak. It chugged along but barely cooled the room. Unfortunately, it was off when I first arrived in the room, so it had a lot of cooling to do. I was there on a day when the temperature outside was in the high 80s. I would recommend getting there and checking in as early as possible and making sure your air-conditioning unit is turned on so that when you return later your room has been adequately cooled. On a similar note, the fan in the bathroom was also weak. After taking my shower, I could not cool off. The bathroom was so steamy that I had to go sit next to the air conditioner and basically put my face right over the air conditioner before I could even put my make up on. (I should note that I did not take an especially hot shower. It wasn’t especially lengthy, either. The fan just was very weak. I don’t really think the fan did anything.) Finally, the hallways were also extremely hot. My room was as far away from the elevator as possible, and walking to the elevator was a rather miserable experience. They clearly do not air condition the hallways. When I got to the elevator, there were other people waiting and they also were commenting about the extreme heat in the hallways.
So, overall I do recommend this hotel but just be aware of these issues so that you can be prepared to deal with them. I did enjoy my stay. The front desk clerk in the evening, Laura, was friendly and accommodating. She recommended places for me to have dinner and she saved me from having to drive because she told me about a restaurant next-door called The Club, so I just walked across the parking lot. The hotel next-door is the sister property to the Holiday Inn, and this location was quite convenient. (The food there was very good. That’s another review, though. ) There is also a great breakfast restaurant right next to the parking lot, so in the morning I again walked across the parking lot rather than having to deal with traffic and went to breakfast before I hit the road.
