Great location, charming historic lodge

Great location inside the National Park is the major to this lodge. Our premium room in the Rapidian building was basic but clean and charming. It was on par with what we’ve experienced at other National Park lodges and better than some. The common room was cozy and had a balcony area with beautiful views. We did not get to try the dining but it was a short walk from the rooms and the views from the dining room looked great. The staff was pleasant and helpful. Overall we enjoyed our brief stay and would like to come again to spen a bit more time in the future.
Get a Preferred Room

After a very disappointing night 9 miles away at Skyland, Big Meadow felt wonderful.
Our room was a Preferred in the Rapidan building on the bottom floor. All the rooms in that block have a semi private patio and a view.
The room is like a standard hotel room. And they aren’t cheap.
We had two queen beds, and though somewhat outdated, it was clean. Bathroom is basic. Could use updating. Walls are thin so know that.
But…I really like Big Meadow’s whole atmosphere.
It’s peaceful and I love the deck at the lodge where your can sit out for a bit and enjoy the stunning views. The lodge meeting room is very nice, there’s rocking chairs and games.
Yes, rooms are overpriced for what you are getting. But you’re really paying for location.
But there are nice views there, unlike Skyland which is overgrown. The dining room is welcoming. Food was excellent. Breakfast was very good. And lunch and dinners were very nice. Again, food is costly, it may be a National park but don’t assume it’s a cheap stay there.
We enjoyed a pizza another evening at the pub.
We also enjoyed a presentation one evening by an amateur astronomer.
And we enjoyed horseback riding one morning. The stables are at Skyland and the wranglers did a good job with guests and the trail ride.
Overall I’d say staying there is worth it for a couple of nights. As for families, there’s a few play areas but it’s really a place to chill out after hiking or driving along the Skyline Drive.
It’s a kind of stepping back in time to a simpler vacation.
Stay for proximity, not the quality of rooms or service

I love staying in NPS lodging, especially to get to trails quickly/early. Usually I find the rooms basic, but fair. The rooms here were basic, but felt almost unsanitary given how, rather than renovating, it seems the maintenance team just cleans and caulks over the bathrooms and whatnot the best they can. For example, the toilet overall looked clean, but the connections where the lid is attached to the bowl were gross, very discolored, even though they showed cleaning cloth fibers stuck in between :( I'm all for maximizing the life out of properties especially where development should be carefully managed, but these rooms - the bathrooms in particular - need some more attention and modernizing. I don't anticipate staying here again, unless rooms are renovated.
A Night at Big Meadows Lodge

This is a review of the lodge, as well as the surrounding amenities. The room was very dark and dated, there was a barking dog upstairs, and the tv remote didn't work. After dinner, we planned to go to the "wayside" to pick up some snacks and sodas, but it closed at 5:00. The lobby has an area where sodas, water and snacks are sold, but it closed at 3:00. The water and other items were still on display, but the lobby desk could not sell anything from it. We planned to get an early start next morning with a muffin and coffee, but again, the lobby snack bar didn't open until 7:00, and of course, the wayside didn't open until later. Just plan accordingly, because you have to be on their schedule.

The room we had, #37, was horrible. None of the door latches worked, the curtains were all threadbare and did not provide privacy. This is not "rustic", it is the apparent result of extremely poor maintenance. I cannot recommend lodging here, especially for $145 + tax per night.
