Recomendo!
Perfect sea view location, but needs investment to justify it's 'Grand" heritage

I had mixed feelings about this hotel. I have always wanted to stay there since boating around the area and the hotel looks so impressive as it dominates the waterfront. We had two rooms; one overlooking the sea (fabulous) the other overlooking the car park (less interesting!). I think my review would have nudged up a rating had it not been raining during our stay and therefore harder to entail three teenagers. We when checked in I asked about the indoor pool, as that seemed like a good option if the weather was against us in mid-August. However, we were informed to use the pool was an extra 250kr per person for two hours as in spa area. That felt like. drip off if you are a hotel guest with kids and that is the main facility. Also, if you have children the pool booking slots are very limited. When you walk around the hotel you can clearly see if needs some exterior attention and investment. The paintwork is crumbling inn places and some of the balcony woodwork is rotting. I know the salty sea air is damaging, but other seaside hotels still mage to look gleaming. The rooms are clean and pleasant, but lacking in style. I had an annoying electrical humming sound in my room. It kept me awake and at 3 am investigated and found it was the fridge in the room. I unplugged it and then it was perfectly quiet (recommend all visitors unplug the fridge if sensitive to noise). The WiFi is poor which is a big no-no for modern visitors. We booked dinner at the French Dinning Room and I really enjoyed that experience. I had the Veal which was excellent and the service was friendly. The breakfast was also good. After dinner we played Billiards and used the shuffle board table which was a lot of fun. However, again this area needs to be enhanced. For example half of the billiard cues were broken and there was no chalk. Again you feel a Swedish interior decorator could combine wonderful scandi design with the elegant old features and come up with a very stylish atmosphere in this area. It is wonderful, historic hotel and worth visiting, I just come that improvements are in the pipeline.
Fantastic location and view

This Hotel is an icon with a long history - we had a fantastic room with an unforgettable view - unfortunately the service (especially in the reception and the restaurant) was a bit disappointing. However the dinner was outstanding - a very good cook!
Nothing Grand about this hotel

An hotel that didn’t live up to its’ name. Poor service among the staff. Lacked the possibility to put a cost at the room(to pay later at check-out) No AC in the room therefore à bad night sleep in the heat. The entire hotel is in need of renovation. Except spa and gym. The gym was splendid. The breakfast was good. The dinner(two evenings) was either really good or pretty poor. Lovely surroundings. The spa was good.
Great location, views and dinner but needs an upgrade!

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is how spectacular food is at Grand Hotel Saltsjöbaden. We went there for an Easter staycation and had a package with spa and four course dinners and I have to say all dishes were delicious, really impressive and above expectations. So I can recommend a visit just for this reason. Our room was on the highest floor which gave a good view of the sea and surroundings and it was also nice to walk around by the sea as weather was good when we were there. The spa was also good with a large indoors pool with sea view. However the hotel and in particular the rooms were visibly worn, the hotel may be 130 years old but an upgrade every now and then would be appreciated at a hotel that claims to be 5 star luxury. Maybe I am old school but I really think you should get what you pay for. And in the restaurant, we did.
