Great setting - let down by annoying omissions

Avaliou em 5 de setembro de 2022

No quibbles with the location and the grounds, it's everything it claimed to be. What could be a great experience was let down by issues that detracted from total satisfaction. Staying in the annexe the rooms are spacious and bathrooms have been refurbished, but the beds are small and the rooms dark. Breakfast menu is archaic - little option beyond the almost inevitable 'full English' hardly in keeping with changing times and tastes. Dinner menu rather limited in choice and again seems based on views that take little account of changing tastes in diet and appetite. Well presented, but a greater range would have been welcomed. Not quite what I anticipated.

embarrassing

We were in a party of 7. celebrating joint birthdays- this was supposed to be an expensive treat. The food was poorly prepared and badly presented. The pork loin was so over cooked it resembled a desiccated piece of old leather whilst miraculously carrying an excess of unrendered fat. The chocolate torte resembled a 1970s angel’s delight - no actually that’s too kind -there was nothing angelic or delightful about this! The morrocan orange cake was a minimal slither swimming in a pool of acrid oil. One of our party had been a regular since 1963 and was left apologetic and embarrassed by our experience. The orders were jumbled up . But perhaps the greatest sin was the lack of disabled toilets with an easy access. One of our gathering with cerebral palsy was unable to go up the stairs with her crutches and was left in a very distressed state.

Fairly expensive for what is on offer

Great location, great looking hotel outside and inside....room a little dated, twin beds very small/narrow and too soft, dining room looks good, dinner average, staff friendly, breakfast limited....if you don't want a cooked one...continental breakfast non existent...at £260 a night we were told that you had to order a croissant the night before!!...no yoghurts...no ham/cheese etc. Judging by the demeanour of the owner he will not change anything. And who can blame him as it must have worked out well for him over the many years. Perfect gin and tonics.

An absolute gem. Stay at an authentic manor house set in beautiful tranquil grounds. A combination of a classy historic hotel and being a guest at someone’s home. It’s welcoming and informal, whilst being slick and professional in an effortless way. The restaurant is excellent and exceptional value on its own, which explains its popularity with both guest and locals. On arrival, we were welcomed by the black Labrador who wanders over to meet you wagging his tail. After being shown our room, some tea and melt in the mouth fruitcake on the terrace gets you off to a relaxed pace. G&T overlooking the garden, whilst perusing the dinner menu eating canapes. Forget Relais and Chateaux this is the real thing, unfussy and tasteful. We will definitely return.

Super rural retreat

Truly fabulous, great value for money, family hotel. Set in the depths of the countryside, this lovely old Manor House is very welcoming, has wonderful rooms in the main house and more modern, but equally superb rooms in the “courtyard”. Really good food in the restaurant and a first class breakfast. Highly recommend.
