Unfriendly and unhelpful would never go to this Hotel

We phoned up to book dinner at Knoll House Hotel for today for 4 adults and 2 dogs only to be told no dogs…on the web site the first thing it says is very dog friendly? The receptionist very unfriendly and unhelpful …We certainly would never stay after this experience.

Usual quality visit to Knoll House. I know it is a love it or hate it place, but everyone we've suggested should go and stay have enjoyed it and re-booked. The new dinner plan was a bit confusing at first but worked out okay in the end. Staff were friendly and helpful even when being told to **** off by a disgruntled diner who found the kitchen was closed when he made his way in at about 9pm. (He was drinking in the bar shortly afterwards rather than rushing off to Swanage to feed his angry hunger so he survived.) When we were there there was plenty of granola, and the breakfast buffet was being freshly restocked throughout so not sure what people are moaning about. Sometimes I do not recognise the place from some of the reviews. Perhaps we are just incredibly lucky every time we stay. We'll be back in April.

A superb, quite unusual place to stay with a great history

I booked this as a pre-birthday treat for my partner and really enjoyed our stay. Knoll House has a rich history; it is located in a beautiful place, too, and even though I grew up on the border of Dorset, it is not an area I am very familiar with. We had a Travelzoo deal including DBB. Admittedly, the outside of the hotel is a bit tatty, and the spa area needs some TLC, although the pool, jacuzzi etc are clean - and the sauna was hot: always a bonus. The main areas of the hotel are very quirky, from the lovely reading room with gorgeous furniture, to the bar, and its embellishments, through to the Enid Blyton information panels (and Noddy cabinet). Our room was very comfortable and clean. The shower was a little temperamental, but the breakfast made up for it - just perfect in so many ways, and we stay in quite a few different places. Our dinner was really nice. We had an allowance and thought the portions would be smaller than they were. Yes, it is quite pricey, but the dishes were perfectly cooked and nicely presented. Service, from most staff, was professional and personable. Some staff seem a little indifferent/not that interested, but I guess this is the same everyone. Knoll House is not a typical hotel - but it is rare in that so many nowadays are generic and bland. We would love to return and experience the history of this place again. Thank you!

Very disappointing. Shabby. Past its sell by date and badly in need of refurbishment.

Rather disappointing. The utilitarian and underwhelming entrance to the hotel was a portent as to what lay within. Dated stucco, rusting rainwater pipes and plumbing held together with zip ties said it all. The whole place smelt musty, as if the carpets haven't been changed in a lifetime and our room was dingy and dated. We had booked a 'suite', it being a special occasion but this didn't mean 'suite' in the conventional sense (sitting area, coffee table, maybe even a sofa), it meant that theres a second twin kids room up a narrow staircase. Oh, and 'ensuite' in Knoll House terms means that the sink isn't in the bathroom but in the bedroom. The view of Studland Bay was a bit of a stretch. Most of the view was taken up downstairs by a shabby patio (to which there was no access) and from upstairs, featured a flat roof and air vents. The shower head was cracked, the sliding shower screen was loose on its screws and there we patches of mould around the sealant. When it rained, the blocked gutters overflowed and cascaded rain onto the patio making it difficult to sleep. On the upside, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was passable (although the 'crispy poached egg served with asparagus wrapped in equally crispy parma ham, was weird). I would not go back. The main redeeming feature was that it was dog friendly. Next time the pooch stays at home.

Disappointing 2nd visit

Disappointing 2nd visit. Bathroom had mould around shower screen and a hole in the floor. Tiniest tv. Good coffee machine.uncomfortable and squeaky mattress. Restaurant expensive for quality of food. Creme brûlée was a heavy solid custard for £9.50. Breakfast is now a buffet. Not a fan of food being kept warm. Eggs floating in oil. No granola or compote. Lounge areas very comfortable with an open fire.Location is superb.
