Not what I’d hoped for
Extremely disappointed in my recent stay here. I booked a “King Jacuzzi Suite” room 2 months ago for Valentines Day weekend. The whole point of booking was for the jacuzzi tub. I booked before I knew about the renovations going on and the change from Genesee Grande to Scholar Hotel, otherwise I probably would have chosen another place. I called the night before we were supposed to check in to make sure everything was fine, due to the change in ownership, and was hurriedly assured that everything was fine. When we arrived, we were given a standard king room. No jacuzzi tub, even though it is literally in the name of the room I booked, and the only reason we booked the place. When I told the front desk about the mistake, they told me that all the jacuzzi rooms are under construction and unable to be used. I am not sure why we weren’t informed about the fact that the room we paid extra for was not available until after we had checked in and had no choice but to stay as it was Valentine’s Day weekend and no other hotel had suites available. I guess they were hoping we wouldn’t notice? We were trying to get away for a nice weekend but probably would have been more comfortable just staying at home. Not to mention the walls are paper thin, it was extremely loud all night and the toilet leaked all over the bathroom floor the whole weekend. We were “refunded” $40 of the total bill of over $400 for our inconvenience. We were very excited to spend the weekend in this “newly renovated” amazing hotel but our weekend was not what we planned at all. Maybe they should have closed for the renovations instead of booking out rooms that don’t exist and corralling everyone down on the first floor. Definitely won’t return and will urge everyone I know to do the same.
WHAT DID THEY DO ???
The Schoar is a new owner remodel of what was called The Genesee Grand. What was once a warm, cozy property is now another attempt at sleek mid century modern. Comfortable seating has been replaced with low backed airport furniture. The public spaces look like a hospital or undecorated, museum. What was once w charming bar & restaurant area is brightly lit and devoid of any petsonality. The guest rooms are basic.. no mini refidgerators or microwave ovens. The property is hauneed by a simple fact: the rooms are small and the bathrooms are micro. Any attempt at modern decoration fails to add square footage. Our room was not cleaned for two days.... we had to request fresh linens. The staff is the best asset of this property. Everyone was very friendly and eager to extend professional hospitality. The front desk staff was great. The bartenders had personality. The food was good. Too bad the property is ugly.
In midst of renovations - probably should have closed for main ones
Arrived in time to catch a late meal - but the main restaurant closed for renovations - just had a small workroom available. Front desk staff not very knowledgeable about alternatives. Breakfast in morning interrupted by many hammerings, etc. Not particularly leisurely. Rooms fine, not special. Need much work to get in shape for real travelers
I visited the Genesee Grand for a week this summer and was sadly not satisfied with my stay. When I arrived on Sunday night I entered the hotel and at the desk were two women asking for their room to be switched due to the room not being cleaned since the last guest had checked out. Not a good sign. I checked in, the front desk clerk was very friendly and professional, and went up to my room. I was horrified to find vomit on the base of the toilet and makeup smears on the pillow cases. I called the front desk and asked for a new set of sheets and for the bathroom to be cleaned. At this point it was almost 9:30 pm. I ended up falling asleep on top of the comforter and never had a visit from the cleaning staff. The next morning on my way out I stopped at the desk to make sure I would have clean sheets and a cleaned bathroom on my return that evening. They said absolutely. Guess what? I returned to my room and no one had been there. The sheets were the same dirty ones that had been left on from the previous guest and there was still crusted vomit at the base of the toilet. That evening I had plans with my cousin, on my way out I spoke with the manager who was horrified at my story and made sure that everything was taken care of. So yes, 24 hours later I had a clean bed and bathroom. The rest of the stay was just okay, the gym was closed due to renovations and they did not offer a free alternative. The food and drinks at the restaurant were okay. Everyone who I encountered that worked there was very nice, they are apparently just short staffed as most nights when I returned to my room around 5 it had not yet been cleaned.
Not what it used to be
The Genesee Grande used to be a reasonably decent hotel when visiting Syracuse University. Recently it is undergoing a change to the Scholar Hotel. It was a classic and quirky older hotel with some grandeur. It is now been updated with smaller functional rooms to give you the real school dorm feel. Common areas have been stripped of all character to be replaced by cheap Chinese furniture and plastic fake flooring, perhaps expecting the worst of student behavior? This is now a very low scale hotel with zero charm. Maybe good to book for cheap night on game days? I have given this 2 stars because currently there is still construction in progress and the mean and dispirited staff will surely improve once they have suitable working condition. I have confidence that over the next few months the hotel can rise to the 2 star level, but the decor and standard they are aiming for will not surpass this level.
