Xmas 2020
Charming best describes this place. Getting the negative out first, it is looking tired and in need of some "TLC" in places. That's it - no more negatives. Come here to relax and absorb the ambiance of the place. Surrounded by lovely grounds and walled gardens and opportunities for some outdoor activities. The staff are really friendly and helpful - they are mostly young and this brings a willingness to ensure you have a great stay. We stayed in a suite, with bedroom and a large, separate sitting room. The food was really very good. Will definitely return.
Pre Christmas Getaway
Stayed here Sunday 20th December on a mud treatment B&B and evening meal deal, we should have stayed in November but this was cancelled due to covid so as a thank you for re-booking we were offered a complimentary afternoon tea which was a nice treat. From arrival to checking out all the staff were friendly and helpful, the food was very good and my partner did not wanted something that was on the inclusive evening meal deal and this was no problem. Breakfast was was tasty with a good choice on offer. We enjoyed the mud spa and I wished I had booked myself a extra treatment (I would advise to book well in advance of staying any treatments as the spa is open to non-residents). We spent sometime exploring the grounds (make sure you have suitable footwear) and there are many outdoor activities to try. We stayed in Honeysuckle which had a separate lounge area which was a nice place to sit and enjoy a bottle of wine in our complimentary bath robes before we went down for our evening meal. We stayed on a Sunday night so the hotel so it was quiet which was perfect for us, I would stay again and felt covid safe
Christmas Escape
I love this place. Stayed in Cornflower Suite for a three day Christmas break. The room was spacious, with a separate room and had two TV's. Food excellent and Christmas Day lunch exceptional. The setting is exquisite with acres of ground to explore. Although I acknowledge there are signs of age and wear and tear in certain places, the overall value is amazing. Staff are mainly young and try very hard, they are approachable and friendly. Massage in Imagine Spa was also very good. The room was not serviced each day but I understand this fits with current Covid restrictions.
Musty and disappointing
We first visited in January 2020 with the idea of seeing if we liked it for a wedding venue. We encountered 2 members of staff that were very rude and unhelpful. When we spoke to the manager upon leaving they offered us a complimentary stay to try change our view on the hotel. We arrived this December, the ‘suite’ smelt like the room hadn’t been opened for numerous weeks, very, very dated and tired. The wallpaper coming off the walls, both of the pillowcases were dirty. The TV remote was under the middle of the bed. The bathroom was dirty with pubes in the shower, the whole bathroom could do with being ripped out and redone. Such a shame as we both liked the public areas and could of seen ourselves getting married there. But the rooms, I wouldn’t of even let my Mother in law stay in. The spa was amazing, the therapists so lovely and welcoming. Their massages were incredible, definitely it’s only saving grace. So very disappointed that both of our stays here have been completely disappointing. I’d save your money and book somewhere else.
Disappointing...
The Hazelwood has so much potential with its fantastic location and amazing history but needs to really get the basics right before attempting to be more than a decent B&B. Just spent two’s nights and when spending over £190 per tonight to stay you expect the basics. Not having your room cleaned is one of them but impossible to contact reception as no one there. If you call through you either need to leave a voice message or email !! Finding dead flies on the windows, layers of dust and cobwebs is not a good start when entering your bedroom & implies that no one cares about basic service or someone is not checking. Total chaos at breakfast this morning & 30 minutes queue just to get a table which was a joke especially when trying to follow social distancing rules and staff wandering around with face masks not properly worn. Issues where addressed at check out once the IT stated working and discount offered but they shouldn’t need to be raised. Finally on leaving our room found the cleaning team had forced open all the fire doors ...In a castle that’s hundreds of years old would suggest that’s not a great idea especially when the doors clearly state ‘fire door keep closed’ A few good points, the evening meal was good & the castle tour was very interesting. If you have a hotel manager they really need to get out of there office and look at the numerous issues with your very young staff members running around in circles with no direction. There also seemed to be lots of complaints this morning from your guests. Would I return?..NO
