PARADISE ON EARTH?
This really is a very special hotel, set amid a small banana plantation on the drier, eastern side of the island, within the town Tazacorte. The atmosphere is that of a former religious house turned into a marvellous hotel/ museum that puts many a National Trust property to shame.. The rooms are spacious and the manicured tropical gardens, thanks to an irrigation system, a jewel. Never before have I wanted to spend my days beside a pool reading a book. This is the perfect place to unwind. 4G on the island is a bit slow, but the hotel internet speed is amazing. Very useful when finding out about the geology of this intrresting volcanic island. We have not been disappointed by a single meal. The hotel staff are charming, and being Spanish, are not native English speakers. This should not be a cause for complaint as a previous reviewer has mentioned. Their English was infinitely better than my Spanish and everything worked fine. Please dont tell anyone else about this place, otherwise it will fill up and we wont be able to return. Never felt so rested in my life. One note about hire cars. The bus service on the island is really good and cheap. The roads are steep and twisted. Unless one wants to explore the more remote spots, the bus service was a joy compared to the UK. The advantage over a car is that one gets a much better view and travelling time, compared to a taxi, wasn't significantly longer. Any motorist would be lucky to achieve an average speed above 30 mph on the roads.
We stayed at this excellent hotel over New Year. We loved everything about it - our room (superior double), our little terrace, the beautiful gardens, pool area, food and most of all the friendly, efficient staff. We liked the choice of eating a la carte in the restaurant or excellent tapas in the more relaxed terrace area. Breakfast was very good. Our stay included the New Year party which was most enjoyable with food, drinks, disco, extremely well organised by the lovely staff. This is a very special hotel with beautiful antiques, interesting architecture, superbly kept gardens. The unspoilt little town is less than 10 minutes walk up the hill, the port area with beach, restaurants and a few shops is about 20 minutes down the hill. If we didn't feel like the walk up from the port the bus runs every hour. We didn't have a car so arranged a private taxi for a day to explore some of this lovely island. Whale watching tours operate from the little port, we enjoyed a sunset trip. If we visit La Palma again this hotel will be our first choice.
Unique only in decorations, but not in service!
The hotel is consistent with what others have said about it - that being - it is a gem. It is truly a beautiful hotel and quite unique in its own right. My room was gorgeous with all the beautiful antiques and paintings, the bed was very comfortable and the welcome drinks was quite nice. Overall, the staff at the reception and at breakfast was quite sincere in their ways to help, but there were a few important points which made me gave this hotel a 3 stars instead of 5. Some points that the hotel can improve on are the following: * Being more knowledgeable about the tours that are being offered by tour agencies. Afterall, they are the first point of contacts. Instead of giving me a brochure, they could try and tell me what is best based on their experiences. *Being more knowledgeable about the daily activities that one can do in neighbouring towns, restaurants, and sight-seeing tips and also take the initiative to ask if I needed help to plan my holiday. *No kettle to make tea in the bedrooms. I would've preferred some tea functionalities especially during the evenings when it gets a bit cold and would like something warm to drink. I rather have tea than free sugary drinks as tea is healthier. * The last annoyance for me was that one of the female staff sitting at the reception asked me to ask the breakfast guys whether there was going to be a seat available for dinner. This is the most rudest thing you can tell your customer to do their job. Anyone that works at the reception should do the work and check for availability (always!) when your customers ask you for dinner seat availabilities! Definitely not a properly trained staff! * The language capability of the staff (especially in the breakfast room) were shocking. Some of them could not even speak business English when asked questions. Even worse, they don't know how to make small talk with people. * The breakfast was nothing special and there should be more healthier alternatives eg. there were no avocadoes yet la palma is known for their avocadoes!!! No green juices or even soy milk etc... They had a very small selection of hot foods for breakfast. * Dinner at the breakfast room was also not very satisfactory. It was very pricey in tiny portions of food and the food was not even great! It made you feel like there was absolutely no value in what you were paying for! There was an attempt to be so creative in the food designs, but the taste and portions were quite shocking!
