Needs to bring itself up to date and be more flexible for diners

I booked this hotel..part of the THL group of 4 adjacent hotels on site for 6 of us....3 couples in celebration of a 5th renewed wedding vows of two dear friends. Having stayed at the THL Derwent previously and enjoyed it ..the entertainment was a big factor...
We like to dance. After a long drive down from north wales we enjoyed our first afternoon sitting outside the aztec bar of the Derwent hotel. We were unable to book direct in tje Derwent as it was fully booked with a skittles group
About 5pm we checked into our room. Check in was ok.
Our room was quite nice and functional. We decided to eat out and went to the beefeater at the premier in about 10 minutes walk from the hotel. We had a lovely meal and steak awesome..
We returned to the hotel for the evening amd enjoyed the singer who had good banter with residents....also obligatory bingo . So we had a nice evening
The sat and sunday the heavens opened and on the Sat night we booked to eat in the hotel and it was a nice meal and again we watched tue entertainment in the Toorak.
The second night the singer was more of a guitarist who tried to sing and you could predict all the songs he was going to play... i think he played for himself . The sunday we tried to book into the hotel for evening meal but were told they were full. Not good for residents of the hotel. We were even prepared to go in early.NO chance. So we went out for a chinese meal for 6 of us which we enjoyed. The toorak didnt have entertainment on the sunday night despite having a full dining room.So we were able that night to go into the derwent... one thing...dancefloor so sticky. Not cleaned. Also bar staff took ages and didnt seem to know what they were doing. So our three nights were over.ONe thing was evident that yoy couldbt get a drink in the toorak in the afternoon despite the reception saying it would be open at 3. Later we were told it was 5pm. So we went across to the derwent... but the a customer came across t9 find us who had also wanted the toorak bar open to say they had opened it... but was too late as we had bought our drinks. There definitly seemed an issue of being short of staff of staff were inexperienced. Yes its after shut down but people are expecting service if the hotel is open. Re breakfasts.... i never leave sausages and enjoy the british banger but after the firsr breakfast i never bothered again. Tasteless leather sausage. Eggs...dont even try to get an egg with a runny yolk even if you ask for one or for poached with runny yolk. All fresh eggs come out solid and rubber and if you have aboiled egg it can almost lie sideways in the eggcup its that small....to me..says poor products ...Would i recommend the toorak or stay here again...no...its the poor cousin to the Derwent. Its a maze of corridors . The two nights we ate out at two other establishments the hotel lost £500 in business from the 6 of us. Yes we dined out well with wine .drinks etc etc. Definitely need to be able to offer paying guests the option to dine if they wish......
TLH needs some TLC!

Recently back from a 5 night birthday stay at the Toorak with my husband. Bed and breakfast only. Room 23, ground floor. Family room - kingsize bed and two singles. Double doors open to terrace. I have stayed here several times in the past for events so knew roughly what to expect. Picked mainly as knew of indoor facilities in view of time of year, but also due to location in respect of places wanted to visit.
Parking - available on site, but might function better if proper parking bays made more visible for all areas - then wouldn't have people taking more space than necessary. Not a problem at time of year we went but could imagine summer would be a nightmare.
Hotel - it's tired. Some of the hall carpets should have been replaced years ago. The edges of the carpet look very dirty and dusty. Decor does need a revamp. This hotel has such potential, but really feel it needs some TLC.
Room - Double doors opening to terrace need looking at - only one locking point for one door with other locking into that one. This needs attention. Door into room from corridor needs to be pulled very securly to make sure it locks when leaving. Is a safe in room - we didn't feel need to use so can't comment if works ok.
Kingsize bed - absolutley AWFUL! We booked into the hotel the evening before my birthday. I spent half that night awake, trying to get comfortable on bed that felt like it was made of concrete honeycomb. So my birthday was spent with me tired and in pain! Made the bed a little better that night by putting a blanket from my car between sheet and bed as didn't have chance to ask anyone about it earlier in day. Managed to speak to one of house keeping staff following morning who arranged for a mattress topper to be put on the bed - so much better. Housekeeper told me that the bed is a constant issue and she keeps having to do this.........so why isn't it being addressed?
Food - breakfast ok - usual fayre. Not as big a choice as some places, but still good. Biggest issue is that everyone crowds around the food buffet areas - in the current climate of social distancing, this is a huge concern. Advised generally not possible to get meal in main restaurant if not part of hotel stay package. Shame really - evening menu seemed good.
Did make use of the Aztec bistro and Albert's Bar. Both can get busy. Did have a very nice steak in Alberts bar.
Various sitting areas around hotel / lounges. Great that so much fresh air being blasted through, but meant they were not very inviting to sit in...........what a waste really.
Pool /spa area - Knew the main pool was good from previous stays. The jacuzzi area is a concern. Again, social distancing issues - think there should be some restrictions on number of people in jacuzzi at any one time - twice had to get out as people forced their way in to what was obviously an already busy pool. Pool attendants don't seem to take any notice of this area.
Staff - on the whole very pleasant and helpful. Maybe reception staff need to be a bit more aware of restaurant situation as we had been advised should be ok to get table in main restaurant.
Entertainment - don't know what it is like in the summer with more families around. If you like bingo it's on most nights it seems (personally hate it). Live performers - largely doing some very dated songs - very much catering to the retired population of residents ocuupying hotel. There really does need to be a greater mix and variety of music. Seems to cater for mostly for the retired coach tour generation!
Areas get shut off for private events - Starlight lounge closed on last evening for some event - know that some visitors were complaining about the lack of notification of this before their stay.
The complex has a lot of stairs to negotiate to get from one area to another. If you have walking issues, then maybe not place to stay for access all around the facilities.
Would we stay again - probably not. Think there are probably better options locally, but it was convenient on this trip.

Myself and my partner visited during the summer and had a lovely time at the Toorak. We took advantage of the Aztec facilities, using the sauna, hot tub and pool when the weather wasn’t good, they are all kept to a high standard. Yes, some of the rooms need a bit of updated decor but after a global pandemic i think the hospitality industry has been through enough without scathing, exaggerated reviews like the ones below. We found the room to be clean and orderly, if not a tad dated but the staff are the real deal! Very attentive and approachable. Would visit again!
Major work needed to bring up to standard

The hotel is very dated and in need of a major update of furnishings and decor. Although there are signs to follow they re not frequent or helpful as too spread out. We were not told of any of the amenities but to look on the board. Staff were not too friendly either . The bar we used we called it the beige bar as this all it was had no atmosphere or life to it. We only stayed as bed an breakfast which was good with decent choices available .
Id say this hotel caters for the more senior clientele although some of them were complaining about it . Our room was clean but did need more of a thorough deep clean as hand prints still all over the window and dust on most of fixtures. Bed was comfy despite being 2 singles pushed together. We also had a sea view which was nice but obstructed by the amount of condensation trapped in the window. Also curtain hanging off on one end very old fashioned bathroom and tires looking furniture in the bedroom.
Location for getting about was good .Outdoor pool areas needed clearing up and pool had leaves etc in which made it look a mess.
We used one of the sister hotels bars one evening as football on it was slightly better than the beige bar .
We booked the hotel on a deal but we wouldn't of paid full price for this hotel as not worth the money .
Avoid until it’s had a complete makeover.

Oh dear don’t think I have ever written a review as negative as this one for the Toorak!
Have stayed at the THL complex three times before and yes the Derwent was a little dated but adequate base where you can enjoy all the facilities on hand.
The Toorak however is very dirty, all surfaces in our room was stickier than a cheap Wetherspoons table. The chair under the mirror was ripped and obviously had not been moved for ages as we found a plastic toy covered in dust at the back! Our room smelt musty and dusty. The bathroom was like something from the 80’s with a shower that head that was so blocked with limescale it made it almost impossible to use.
Our first nights experience in the restaurant was one not to hopefully be repeated. After being shown to our table we were pounced on to make our choice, all three courses and coffee then waited 40 mins for starters to arrive. They restaurant was not that busy and there were plenty of staff walking around aimlessly, but trying to get eye contact almost impossible. Mediocre starters but when our mains arrived, stuffed field mushrooms, they were burnt beyond recognition and as to what they were stuffed with, goodness knows what. The onions and veg in ratatouille were not cooked through and were in an insipid strange tasting sauce. Took an age to alert someone and when we did the girl just shrugged and said ok I will take them away, no apology or replacement offer! Deserts took for ever and so we decided to quit whilst winning and leave.
We did however walk through to the Derwent and were able to move our meal plan to there which was a lot better and brighter restaurant experience.
The whole complex needs money spent on it to clean and bring it up to a rentable standard.
In this day of enhanced cleaning due to Covid we could see none of this in place, empty hand sanitiser stations and finger prints all over glass on doors and sticky handles.
The hotel seems to be more set on promoting Norovirus awareness something I can now see would spread like wildfire under the current bad cleaning practices in place, or not as is the case!
Avoid would be my recommendation until it’s had a complete over haul. Then I am sure it would be a lovely resort to stay at.
